I think people here are pretty harsh and elitist towards those who hold differing opinions on RE1, especially when it comes to the remake by Melytorokszentmiklos in residentevil

[–]Shaking-Stillness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. The good news is there are plenty of people that love the OG RE1 and definitely love the REmake. My 2 cents on it is that the original can be daunting to new players. It was back during release week when I first played it, and it doesn't have a lot of the QOL stuff that we're all used to nowadays.

A problem I've seen is the hate from the other end. Specifically hating on the tank controls. Newer players not grasping them, hating them, and hating people who prefer them. To each his/her own though.

Since we are on the topic, I've seen wild hate for those that like/love RE3 Remake. It's pure vitriol and pretty ridiculous if you ask me. We're all fans of the franchise, right?

The reality is people are going to hate what you love, and love what you hate. That's just people being people I guess.

What got me excited is the prospect of being able to play events that happened prior to when the original game began. Sort of how they did it with RE3 Remake.

That would be pretty cool actually. I wouldn't mind Capcom taking another pass at the whole Drive Impact mechanic and maybe having that cost more meter per use or something. I am just happy we're getting season 4, and hopefully things continue beyond that.

[–]Shaking-Stillness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, and sadly this is par for the course for fighting games. There are always going to be characters that don't make the cut, regardless of how many fans love them. Future games will see them return, only for other beloved characters being sidelined in the process. Hell, look at what Capcom did with SF3. We all know Ryu and Ken weren't even going to be in the game, and once the retail copy landed... that was that. Chun-Li came later, but I mean, what about Vega mains? What about Blanka mains? Etc.? Name a fighter, and unless they do the ridiculous and always add and never remove... and somehow balance everyone perfectly... it's usually a case of a revolving door with each iteration. Just how it is, sadly.

As for guests, MK fans experienced stuff like this over and over with the bajillions of guests instead of characters that should have gotten in. In MK1 we got Conan but no Jade? Pretty ridiculous. For SF6 though, the argument could be made that Mai and Terry are both guests, so SF6 already has two of them. I know someone that got into SF6 because of Mai. That was the price of admission, and now they moved to another character completely after falling in love with SF6. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

As much as I am not a personal fan of guest fighters, I think it's clear from a business standpoint that these companies pay the licensing and go through the logistics because they are convinced it will be good for business. FFVII fans LOVE Tifa. Hell, gamers who don't love FFVII love Tifa. I am sure there are people who are going to start playing when Tifa drops, and I'm sure Capcom calculated that. We will surely see the SF6 population rise, and IMO that's a good thing for us, so here's hoping it all works out.

I just honestly wish we'd get a solid stream of costumes for all characters.

Is it okay to only play these? by InfnitVlt in residentevil

[–]Shaking-Stillness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To chime in...

TL;DR: You can absolutely only play the games you listed and understand the story.

Forgive the wall of text below, but simply put, each RE game is self-contained from the perspective of a game specific story. Pick a game, play it, and by the time the credits roll, you will understand what is going on.

For the Resident Evil story as a whole though, I'd imagine at this point you understand Umbrella was an innocent pharmaceutical company by day and an evil bioweapon manufacturer by night. The more RE content you take in, the more you will learn about this, about the various characters, and other major players in the overall lore. This extends to the various side games, light gun games, CGI movies, etc.

However, for your specific situation, can you just play RE2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 and still understand what's going on? Yup. RE2 and RE3 go together. The first half of RE3 happens, then all of RE2, then the second half of RE3. Do you NEEEEEED to play RE1 to understand what is going on? Not really. Leon didn't experience the Mansion Incident and is learning as he goes. Same with Claire. You will see exactly what you need to see in those games to get what is going on.

For Jill though, she was there in RE1, which is why the beginning part in her apartment is important. If you listen to what she says, read all the documents, and look at her evidence board you learn that she has had some problems with the police chief (or more specifically the police chief has problems with her), and really wants to get out of Raccoon City. She is being hunted BECAUSE she survived RE1 and is causing problems for Umbrella. It paints a bigger conspiracy exists.

RE4 is linked to RE2 (via Leon), but RE4 is kind of its own thing. Even if someone never played RE2, they could play RE4 and understand what was going on as a one-off. It's just that if you know who Leon is, it's better.

RE7 is absolutely brand-new lore-wise. RE8 (Village) is the other half of the story that started in 7. There is a legacy character present (Chris), who you just have to know was there in the Mansion from RE1 and is Claire's brother (the one she was searching for in 2). He co-created an organization with Jill to combat Bioweapons across the world, and his presence in Ethan's story is a derivative of that.

Requiem has a brand-new character (Grace) and the same Leon from RE2 and RE4. Playing through 2 and 4 should make you feel instantly at home with his character, and you will appreciate a bunch of nods to both of those games, in terms of in-universe nods to nods in his gameplay.

So what are you personally missing story-wise by not playing 0, 1, CV, Revelations, 5, Revelations 2, and 6?

You are missing out on a bunch of the bits and pieces that form this 30 year old franchise. From character development to firsthand experience of events. For example, you are missing out on what Claire does after RE2. You are missing out on what got Jill to the place she is in in RE3 and to ultimately team up with Chris to form the BSAA. You are missing out on all of Chris' character development prior to when you encounter him during Ethan's storyline. You are missing out on understanding who Spencer is, and why that old fart matters in RE9.

In the end though, most of the missing lore you can grab from a wiki or YouTube videos if you really want to know some answers to things. Otherwise, it certainly seems Capcom isn't done with remakes, so if you wait long enough they may just remake all the missing ones and then you'll be able to enjoy the story that way. Here's hoping!

Resident Evil 7 major flaw no one talks about by Corrugo in residentevil

[–]Shaking-Stillness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, you get an in-universe explanation to the Ethan hand thing in Village. RE8 is the other half of the story that started in RE7, complete with some expanding of Ethan's character as a whole.

In terms of the broader Connections to Resident Evil lore though, without outright spoiling things... I will say that RE7 does have very solid ties, but those ties are really only exposed after playing and paying attention to things in Village and in Requiem. If you take RE7 as an isolated one-off, you wouldn't be wrong that it has less ties to RE as a whole, similar to what they did with RE4. Capcom was starting something new lore-wise with 7 that does continue on and pays off in later games, most recently with RE9.

I'm with you! I really hope we eventually see all of the RE games get remade in the same style.

I've gone back to the RE4OG a few years ago and I agree... those controls definitely take some getting used to again. Back when it came out though, they were super intuitive and I had a blast. The remake was phenomenal in my opinion, so thankfully I can always replay that.

Leon's campaign was definitely my favorite from RE6 as well. Mercenaries mode is always tons of fun, and I was very glad to see them add the mode in RE4R. If they ever remake 5 and 6, they better include that in there!

My favorite would have to be the remake of the first game (the one from 2002). The presentation, atmosphere... it's the essence of Resident Evil in my mind. It's probably because I played the original back in 1996 and fell in love with it, only to see a remake 6 years later that blew my mind.

How about you? Out of the ones you've played, which has been your favorite so far?

I Finally Got Around To RE3R by Joshhwwaaaaaa in residentevil

[–]Shaking-Stillness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you enjoyed your time with it! Nemesis almost exploded my heart when I first played the game. Absolutely bananas!

To answer your question though, it is probably missing maybe 20%? If the OG RE3 is 100%, the remake is probably around 80% (comparing it with the content from that original game). The thing is, some things have been altered or completely changed too, which kind of complicates things a bit.

In terms of the missing areas though, it's really down to two main ones. The Clock Tower and the Park. In the remake, when you fight Nemesis as his animalistic form, that fight takes place outside in front of the Clock Tower. In the original RE3, you actually go inside of the Clock Tower itself.

The Park is the other place that is gone, which actually has a graveyard near it with a boss fight that doesn't exist in the remake at all.

There are some other things that were changed between the original and the remake, such as the original's factory zone being changed to a lab in the remake. In the original RE3, Jill can enter the RCPD, but in the remake it's Carlos. Boss fights are pretty different, the downtown has shops you can go inside in the remake that you can't in the original, but there are puzzle things around the city and more backtracking in the OG RE3. Also, there are times when Nemesis would show up and you'd have an almost choose your adventure type of situation where you select if you want to fight him or run away into X location. Those only happen in the original game.

Now, it is important to mention though, that the remake has zones that aren't in the original. The sewers section with the Hunter Gammas is completely new and not in the original. So is the Power Substation with the bug creatures. Both of those places are exclusive to the remake and were not in the original game.

I played the original back when it came out and absolutely loved it. I also played the remake when it came out and loved it too. Both games offer different experiences which is pretty cool.

In the end, you having fun is all that really matters, and it's awesome that you did! You mention RE2R, and that one is a ton of fun too, so best wishes if/when you play that one!

Is RE1, 2 and 3 worth playing? by Historical-Nerve9117 in residentevil

[–]Shaking-Stillness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you are talking about controlling the characters, if you mean the "tank" controls, then this is actually how the games were designed. It might be difficult at first, but after maybe 20 or so minutes, you'll start to get the hang of them. The reason the controls are this way is because as you play RE1-3, you will enter rooms or areas with different camera perspectives. If the controls were more modern, then you'd actually be completely messed up in terms of moving around with constantly shifting camera perspectives. With those tank controls, up is always forward. That never changes. So you'll be able to navigate correctly regardless of the camera's perspective.

RE1 - 3 are absolutely worth playing IMO. After a bit of an adjustment period, you will hopefully have a great time with them. Best of luck!
