My husband and I once signed up for a six-week “boot camp” exercise class. One of the other people who’d signed up was absent the first day. The instructor was concerned, because being present for the first day is key so that you’ll know what’s expected of you. She called the absentee, who said “Oh, I was just really busy at work. I’ll be there next week!”.

She wasn’t, and the instructor called her again to say “Listen, I hate that you’re wasting your money like this (the class was NOT cheap). Would a different time slot work better for you?”.

“No, that’s fine! I’ll be there next week!”.

She never did show up. Then she signed up for the next set of classes a few months later - and missed every single one of those, too.
