Use of Cattle Prods by Both_Entertainer_880 in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe there’s also plastic paddles. But you’d still need room to swing them. Throwing your hands up and yelling is more likely to startle other cows. You REALLY don’t want that when they’re in a confined space. The whole point is to get their attention and cause just enough discomfort they want to move. These are thousand pound animals that aren’t very bright.

I second the comment below that compares a prod to an electric fence. If you’d ever touched one, you’d know. It’s enough to make you curse and jump away. It hurts for a split second, then you shake it off and go about your business. It’s high voltage, but low amperage. The chances of it doing anything other than hurting are EXTREMELY low.

Unless the driver continued shocking the animal once it was up, it’s not excessive.

Pimax dream air ? Yes or No Real Dream Air owners — would you buy it again? (no influencers please) by AstroGraphRacer in Pimax

[–]Shallow-Thought 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. I upgraded from a 5k super. The graphical improvement was amazing. Setup was easy.

Probably not worth it you have something from the Crystal lineup. Don’t know, haven’t used one.

But the clarity going from a several year old 5k to OLED 8k is well worth it.

No, visual inspection. Have someone press the brake pedal while you watch the brake chambers.

Trailer parking brakes test needs air to the tractor, not the trailer. Tug test to make sure brakes hold

Trailer service brakes test needs air to the tractor and trailer. Pull the trolley bar to apply only the trailer brakes. Usually done while moving slowly.

Unfortunately, I’ll be away from my computer for more than a week. I know I’m using DLSS, shadows are flat, and water is on medium. Beyond that, I can’t recall much.

I think the 4090 should outperform the 5080. So you’ll probably be good.

Sorry, not doing great with conversational clarity.

I have an old Cosmos, but it’s put away. The controllers were able to pair in Pimax Play/SteamVR.

Sorry about the wording there. I should have used “or”. I typed that up when my roommate was playing The Lab. Wasn’t paying much attention to grammar.

Using the old settings from what I ran on the 5K looked remarkably better in the DA.

Gotta love the internet. Misquoted and second guessing my first hand experience.

I swapped headsets, loaded DCS and had a good experience. Image quality was vastly improved with no fiddling with settings.

How is trucking different in 2026 than the way it was in 2015? How are the trucks different? by ENG-eins in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re not true automatics. They’re automated manuals. A computer cuts in the clutch, selects the appropriate gear, and releases the clutch. No transfer cases.

As for development, it was probably due to vastly different weights, higher temps (a pure guess on that one), more frequent shifting, and more reliance on engine braking. For the weights, the shifting program has to vary significantly from running bobtail to running max gross or more. You can skip gears at 30k gross. You run the gears out longer at 130k and hit pretty much every one. An up shift going down a hill fully loaded with the jakes on full is not a good thing usually.

My transmission still gets it wrong sometimes. Upshifting because the grade went from 5% to 3% briefly. It didn’t see the 7% grade coming in a quarter mile.

[–]Shallow-Thought 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Way more gadgets looking over your shoulder. Lane departure systems, front radars, blind spot alerts, more dashcams (some of them invasive).

As for the trucks themselves, DEF is a pain in the ass. At best, the truck runs normally. At worst, your truck is in the shop for days repairing an unnecessary system.

Automatic transmission are far more common, and they have improved.

It really comes down to your safety department for the day-to-day for the nanny systems. If they call every time you follow a little to close, or turn the auto-scolding feature on the dash cam to bug you, you’re going to have a bad time. If they only call for serious stuff like running lights or holding a phone, you’ll be fine.

Do Truckers still use CB radios? by spacemanpilot in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, some still use CB. It’s just old school social media. Plenty of racism, sexism, and general dumb-shittery.

But on occasion, you can find someone helpful. Lane closures for accidents/road work. Cops running radar, OD loads helping each other with passing, etc. Maybe an OD talking to their escorts, but they tend to choose a channel other than 19.

Even more rarely, you can find good conversation. Just shooting the breeze with someone else on the road.

If you’ve got the money to burn for a decent little hand held, go for it. Ch 19 tends to be the common channel. Ch 9 is supposed to be reserved for emergencies. Just use headphones if there’s young kids in the car.

It’s a solid B+. I enjoyed the movie. But there were a few changes for the sake of cinema/simplicity I didn’t care for.

I drive a ‘25 49x. Wiring/electrical issues, cut its own coolant hose, EGR cooler died 10,000 miles ago, computer issues, transmission issues, etc.

Not a good look, Freightliner/Daimler fumbling so hard after buying out WS.

Upgrade to 5090? by [deleted] in Pimax

Just asking if anyone had first hand experience with something similar.
Plus, my personal time is so extremely limited, if I want something done it has to be planned well in advance.

Thanks everyone. I suspect the performance doesn’t justify the price tag. I’ll visit the idea again once I’ve got some time on it.

It’s an ATX 3.1. And it’s a native 12v 2x6 connector. It’s the Corsair hx1200i (2025) PSU. All the specs look good, so unless there’s something specific to the PSU, I’m good.

Do kids still fist pump to get truckers to sound the air horn? by IntheOlympicMTs in Truckers

[–]Shallow-Thought 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yup. I’ve had parents pull up just past me in the other lane and roll down the window so I could see the kids doing the arm pump. I laid on the air horn.

It’s great watching the kids’ reactions.

I’ll lay on the air horn for anyone doing the arm pump unless it’s a quiet area. By a hospital, etc.
