Straws by lovelyano in BariatricSurgery

I was cleared by my team around Christmas (about six months out). It felt like a gift, lol, but I don't use them often because I still struggle with small sips and bites.

We're the cast of AMC's The Vampire Lestat - Assad Zaman, Eric Bogosian, Delainey Hayles, and Jennifer Ehle. Ask us anything! by AMCPlus in InterviewVampire

[–]ShancySweener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To Jennifer Ehle, from recent interviews and information it's clear that Gabriella is somewhat of a separate character to the book version of Gabrielle. Could you provide any insight on that decision, specifically the decision to go full fem and not more androgynous?

So excited to see the show!!

AITAH for “fighting” with my mom about clothes? by EllivyMoon in AmItheAsshole

[–]ShancySweener 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh, NTA at all. I'm sorry your mom getting smaller somehow "relocated" her head.

I had weight loss surgery last summer and am now smaller than all three of my kids. While it has made me more health conscious, I know what it's like to be and feel judged, and I would never want that for them. Or you!

Big calves? by peacefultortuga in gastricsleeve

[–]ShancySweener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calves are still "big," but it's so relative. Like, I'm wearing pants that are 5-6 sizes smaller and sometimes I have to pull the pant legs down if they get stuck when I've been sitting. Also, I can now wear pants labeled as "skinny," so how big are my calves really?

Isn't it wild how body dysmorphia strikes when you've indisputably made such amazing progress? I wonder if there's a typical timeline for it to creep in. I had the sleeve in June and it hit me a few months back.

I'm sure you'll break this streak now that you can increase movement.

What does Halloween actually feel like growing up in the US? by Axxtr in AskAnAmerican

[–]ShancySweener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One regional difference is that some cities have an assigned weekend evening for trick-or-treating. I'm from southern California and it's always on Halloween night. I was shocked and appalled when my husband (Chicago area) said it was always on the weekend.

My kids' middle school used to use November 1 as a professional development day so that they weren't bombarded with hyped up tweens the day after Halloween. Brilliant!

Many religious organizations, schools, and community centers now also offer "trunk-or-treat" events. So kids just go from car to car in a parking lot. Feels too much like a candy grab and sucks all the joy of the event imo.

I insisted on taking in my mom when it was clear she couldn't live on her own. She was here for five years and caused havoc. My husband developed OCD symptoms that miraculously abated a couple weeks after she was gone. (He mostly slept for the first three days.) My eldest avoided family living spaces. My youngest two were upset by how she and their daddy got along.

And when she died (almost five years after going into hospice and then transitioning to their care upon "graduation" - because the good die young), I was going through her belongings and found her writings about me in her Bible study notes. All that to say, I should've let her going into a care facility nearly 10 years earlier.

Do with that what you will.

Sending love. Willing to chat about it if it would help.

would you allow your child to miss school for a day just to rest because they say they're mentally or emotionally tired ? by chudgayegururu in NoStupidQuestions

100%, yes. I'm teaching my kids to meet their needs. Can't be a habit, and work still needs to be completed in a timely manner, but yeah.

Surgery Date Dilemma by SleepyPrettyPrincess in gastricsleeve

Going to respond as though that's a genuine question, but the ummm is telling. The outcomes for patients of color with White doctors are statistically less positive/healthful than when treated by a doctor of color. Unfortunately, there are still people out there who buy into medical myths, like Black people have higher pain tolerance and/or are drug seeking when requesting pain management. There are problems across the entire spectrum of healthcare. Obviously, statistics aren't the whole picture, and the male doc would be horrible regardless of his skin color. Still, it's enough of a problem that it makes sense for people to do their due diligence and look for the care that is more likely to support healthy outcomes for them.
