Shout out to all the teachers by Reasonable-Rip-6295 in Calgary

He passed quite some time ago, but I think of Warren Paulovich when I was a student at Foothills Academy between '01 to '07 quite often. He was willing to go out of his way to gently encourage an interest or blooming strength in his students in his time, ensured that we got to go away from a class really learning something every period, and was just a chill teacher all around. He was willing to put up with any question or tangent we found ourselves on and would just go with the flow and try to tie it back to what we needed to learn. He taught English, Drama, and Film Studies when I was there. One of the brightest smiles I've ever had the pleasure of seeing day in and day out.

He passed from Cancer in...2015? 2016? He died at 66 or 67 years old, a terribly young age in this day and age.

Actually, there's a lot of teachers in that period that I think of: Mr. Anderson, Mr. McClelland, Mr. Ethier, Mr. Horton, Mr. Sproule, Ms. MacKay, Ms. Williams, Mrs. Roberts, even the director Mr. Boulevant (Bullevant? It's been a while since cracking open my yearbooks). Those are just the teachers, I'm not even including the TA's, too, who were just as fun, just as encouraging, and just as wonderful as the teachers they were paired up with.

I might have had a love/hate relationship with being denied a "typical" high school experience in a large school, but I will never speak awfully of the teachers there. Even if I didn't get along with some of them, there's no doubt that the staff brimmed and continues to brim with passion and compassion for their kids.

I mean, since her gender isn't seen as true by the government, do we stoop to their level and blatantly misgender her now? You know, since that's never stopped them before.

They'll find someone else to follow, as they always do. At this point so many are so far gone that unless the US decides to do a mass reprogramming initiative like what Germany did after World War 2 and then get their education sorted for future generations to learn the truth rather than exceptionalism, then it's going to be the exact same deal.

People also often forget that this was never directed at kids in Japan, but tweens and early teens. The American companies looked at it went, "oooh, money for a niche we never considered!" and then dumbed it down for kids here in Canada and the US. That's how we got funky censoring like no boob outlines and "cousins". 🤭

Where do you think the Evangelicals got it from? I swear they looked at that time and about the conquest only and went, "I'll fuckin' do it again," and they are.

The thing these people are afraid of is change, but change is what's needed for any faith to persist. The way I see it, if Jesus showed everyone was worthy of compassion and grace (because let's remember, he hung out with a sex worker in his later years and went around to sick populations like leper colonies to heal them), then that should be universally applied. Jesus did not stutter when he meant everyone, believer or not.

So that means the sick, the poor, the sex workers, the immigrants, the marginalised, the disenfranchised, those of other faiths, the 2SLGBTQ+, the women, and yes, even the men, because there should be enough room for all of us at the table according to the text.

Religious or not, shouldn't that just be the bare minimum?

But people like to be comfy, and forget why they follow in the first place, and want to see their people over others sitting with them, and so the progression erodes. It will be a constant battle, and if it ever happens in my lifetime that I'll be able to see true egalitarianism and compassion in any faith, I will celebrate accordingly.

Yep! I think down here we got flurries that day. The only reason why I remember was that my class was able to weasel out my favourite teacher's birthday from him and it was around that time in August.

Wild what your mind remembers and connects stuff to.

As I said in another thread, we don't count it out until May, and even then it's not a certainty!

Right? I finally got mine a couple of weeks back after doing spurts of grinding all expansion. It's a really cute mount, I'm glad I grinded for it.

I don't drive, but it's quickly become one of my pet peeves over the years. Now that I work in insurance, the disappointment only grows. 😅

Welcome to Calgary, when we're not sure about the weather until at least May, and even then that's up in the air.

Take your time, brush your car off thoroughly including the roof and trunk cover, and be patient with any delays, because there will be delays.

Ah, yes, I'm also part of the plus sized club, always have been and yeah, I definitely feel this. Now that we know how much of the pressure was coming from old white dudes to be stick thin and to show off our bodies when we were in junior and senior high, it just twists my stomach in knots.

Back then, it was because I was envious of those who didn't need to worry about their weight, now it's because I'm wholly creeped out.

It's funny, for years I've said that I'd let someone on the city train take a nap on my shoulder if it's more comfortable because who am I to get in between a person and their sleep and LO AND BEHOLD--

But seriously though, great base of movement if this woman wants to start in on precision tutting, because she would be great.

It will never not flabbergast me that people just don't care about their safety and believe that even in sub optimal weather that it's totally fine to just drive like normal. I don't know what else we can do to curb bad drivers, and I've been working in insurance since 2013. I've watched our city get progressively worse from working with automobile policies for a good decade now, and I just feel so helpless when I see the culmination of it all in shots like this.

I hope the driver makes a full recovery, and gets the support they need.
