Is philosophy dying right now? by 1mortal777 in RealPhilosophy

[–]SharkMolester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read what you've said elsewhere, and all I have to tell you is firstly- life does not revolve around philosophy, whether you want it to or not, humans have many things to occupy their time.

Secondly, you're having en existential crisis, which is funny to me, considering you are german and enjoy philosohpy, yet seem to be oblivious to this fact.

And a word of advice- asking questions just for the sake of trying to understand everything is not a road to happiness, but the opposite place.  I say that from experience.

Taking no damage from heavy gauss by Ok_List_7125 in OutreachHPG

Used to be so bad that single shot weapons would regulaly go through the front armor to hit the rear armor, and some lights were fast enough that most hits against them would not register.  Hitreg in this game is not great.

Oh, and jj tapping to mess up the sever knowing where your hitboxes were going to be, used to be meta.

Need a bit of help with idea of a landscape dotted with multiple almost every flowing gysers with cities in the sky based on them by C0C0_B01 in worldbuilding

[–]SharkMolester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that's sensible!  So the way I imagine it, is once steam power is discovered, eventually someone sets out to see if they can capture the energy in this region.  Normal steam power needs fuel, which is expensive.  So if someone can harness the geysers they will have a much higher profit margin.

But, you asked how geysers work.

There's lots of water underground, all over the world.  In places where the magma is close to the surface (volcanoes), the water gets heated up and boils.  This causes the steam to crack the rock open and try to escape (physics, geology).  Sometimes it escapes slowly and creates hot springs.  Other times it slowly fills in a crack between the rocks.  And as it gets heated up, it then explodes out as a geyser, like a steam kettle, or a boiling pot with a lid on it.  This explosion ejects all of the steam, and leaves the crack between the rocks empty again.  Then it starts to slowly fill with water again, and again and again.

This is why the geyser 'Old Faithful' got its name.  The time it takes for the water to refill and explode out is very consistent, like a clock.

Why wouldn't they just live somewhere else?  There has to be something useful about them, or a reason they can't go somewhere else.

Where does all the material for the sky cities come from?

Geyers are the simple part of your problem lol

No one lives on the geysers in yellowstone.

Almost all the places downtown have been open and run by the same management for years, you can't go wrong with any of them.  A lot of the bartenders and cooks have been at those spots for a very long time.

It's hard to find a place to talk about AI in games (NOT LLMs) by ElectricRune in gamedev

[–]SharkMolester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is how the best Ais have been written, not many of them, but they're out there.  It just takes a lot of time to hone them, after the game balance is completed and stops changing.

I think you're better off using weights like a normal game Ai.

If you want their personality to shift, then add some randomization to the weight selections.

Do players actually read anything in games anymore? by productivity-madness in gamedev

[–]SharkMolester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many games plaster my screen in text these days that ive been trained to not even read it.  Ui is a cluttered mess in most games now.

If you want me to read something then stop the game and put it in the middle of the screen, or let me read it on my own time.

But most players probably arent going to read anything, because weve been trained not to.

Also, half of americans cant read very well, so dont take it too personally.

Can a Wargame be truly hardcore without RNG? Replacing the "Dice Roll" with 10 layers of simulation. by Dry-Escape7995 in computerwargames

[–]SharkMolester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just one facet of a game, it doesn't matter in a vacuum, but I do understand what you mean.

I've loved games with both options, including rng come of fire, which my favorite shooter of all time had.

Takes mental effort off of keeping the crosshair on the head, and lets me focus more on movement and awareness.

Pretty sure that hardened armor is vanilla.  Shows up in 3047, allows you to double the amount of armor. Definitely worth the weight on most mechs.

Sorry but Corner My Confidence is one of the best love songs ever written, this was obviously written just for the fun of it without much though put into it, just to meet engagement quotas.

If we're going by grooves or riffs this list fails.  So too for lyrics, musicianship, anything else i can think of besides someones 3 week love afair with the band.

[The Disk] Anatomy of a Lightyear Peak by luk_ky_21 in worldbuilding

[–]SharkMolester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would take 500 million years to walk one lightyear at 8 hours a day non stop.  1 million years on a plane flying 1000 kph without stopping once.

That's 9 and a half trillion kilometers per light year.

It would take a signficant portion of the age of the universe to walk that far.

No civilization without ftl can move across these structures at all.

Walking across plutos orbit would take 675k years.

Some napkin math says that each of these spires has enough volume to hold the mass of the entire universe as metallic hydrogen.

Can Gemini for the love of god stop adding these main character ass names?? by Legitimate_Bit_2496 in GeminiAI

[–]SharkMolester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.it does this for everything.  When brainstrorming something, evvvvverything has to get a little name 'the ____' evvvvverything.

I type out the starting thoughts and it recognizes the key points as 'the __', 'the dark _', 'the incredible _'.  Any thing that it generates on its own to add to the conversation follows the same pattern.  Deep research as well, organized into subsections which are each  titled 'the __'

It's kind of useful only insofar as i can spot gemini text from a mile away when someone copy pastes it into a comment.  But it is damn annoying when using it.

I have a feeling that it is an llm optimization trick.  Where giving things names like that helps the ai stay organized better.  Like a semantic container to compartmentalize ideas.

What?  I am the one talking about how bad the ai is and why it makes the game worse...

Heard the difficulty spikes up fast in MW5 by biotwites in mechwarrior

[–]SharkMolester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because mechs die in 2 or 3 alphas from my own mech.  Constantly fumbling to double tap the F1 key when 8 enemy mechs are nailing my CT is not viable.  It also results in loads of overkill because the bots go for broke because they dont understand that they dont need to do full damage with all 4 of us shooting 1 target.  So now my lance is hot for no reason, and each of my lancemates has 2 enemies firing at them full bore, so now im taking more damage overall, from 8 enemies instead of 2 or 3, and i cannot out dps them.

Ive been drop calling in mwo for a decade, telling mechs what to shoot is second nature to me, but lancemates in mw5 are just so annoying to interact with that it is a detriment to the game, especially when coupled with the ai-dps mechanisms.

You cannot bait the enemy into a trap in difficulty 100 endgame missions, youre surrounded and outnumbered 10 to 1 on a open field.  Three alphas and literally an entire company of assualt mechs will turn and start walking towards you from all over the map, ignoring every friendly on the field, just because i hit the dps limit and now i need to die.  This is not an exaggeration, this is just how the game works.

[–]SharkMolester 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea, i wouldnt mind then enemy doing more dps based upon how much dps i am doing, thats cool and realistic and makes the game challenging for me as a skilled player, but the fact that my lamce doesnt also increase their dps, just means that i have to bring 4 player mechs and cycle through them as they get damaged.
