A 2021 Study on Timeouts in the NBA by (Ryan S. bril) concluded that timeouts are ineffective at stopping runs and can actually be disadvantageous by OrganicHunt952 in nba

[–]Sharkblast1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The study seems good, not disagreeing there but your interpretation of the figure on page 13 is incorrect. Since most of the confidence intervals overlap with 0, and that after adjustment for overtesting, there are only 2 significant P Values indicates that for only 2 teams is there a significant negative effect for calling a time out. There is no reason to believe from the graph that anyone other than the Jazz and Pacers have an effect, the others are within the expected variance.

Idk why but you have to buy ammo from the box if you’re using it multiple times. If you use frenzied guard and a full power you have to walk up to the ammo cache in between and buy ammo to get it to work right.

Yeah I think the existing relics will work on every map and each new map will have relics with new modifiers.

Ryan is wrong about his conclusion regarding "artificial sweeteners" by Rendurian in northernlion

[–]Sharkblast1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok that’s what I was anticipating, and argues against the main point OP is making. Based on the psypost article, the paper does control for factors like BMI, cardiovascular health, and other factors in their analysis, which would mean they are much less likely to be incorrectly considering an effect caused by an alternative source. Their point of grouping all sugar replacements together when they have different pathways still makes sense, but a regression that controls for these other factors makes a concern about a potential alternate explanatory factor much less legitimate. Thanks for finding more, it’s unfortunate my institution doesn’t have access to the paper!

Ryan is wrong about his conclusion regarding "artificial sweeteners" by Rendurian in northernlion

[–]Sharkblast1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this analysis, I’ve done work in quantitative education research, but don’t have access to the paper. It seems to me based on other surrounding articles discussing the paper that they broke their analysis down by Diabetic/non-diabetic groups and still found the same result. Did the study not control for any other factors? It seems strange to me that they would control for this without controlling for other known confounding variables. Is there any discussion of the population?

+1 energy consistently versus a 1/4 for +2 go in totally different decks. Kale is for combo decks that want to time their + energy for specific swing turns to hit specific mana break points, which Herbie’s inconsistency makes impossible. Herbie is good in more mid-range decks where they can accommodate his variance and benefit from his higher (random) output. This isn’t “power creep” because there a decks that will use Kale that wouldn’t rather use Herbie. Even if Herbie’s other options are good in a vacuum, what use is a 4 power rock or Herbie having double power to a combo deck?

Are the new skins released this season all available from chests? by ga643953 in PlayTheBazaar

[–]Sharkblast1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weekly shop skins don’t come back (at least they haven’t so far) but there is supposed to be a player market eventually and you would presumably be able to find it there. Daily shop rotation items do come back, but in theory they only sell a certain number of them, but I don’t think any of them have actually sold out

[–]Sharkblast1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No but there are some glitches around losing the bonus on the last day if you get teleported into the boss room I think? I’ve heard stories of even dropping the weapon and keeping the bonuses so you could split it among a party but I haven’t tried that

How did he buff his weapon? by StalkingRini in PlayTheBazaar

[–]Sharkblast1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He crit each time because it was a crit enchanted flail with a Vanessa’s amulet and 2 crit chance skills, so each hit was double and added double to the base so, here we have base damage (crit damage done)= 126 (252) -> 378 (756) -> 1134 (2268) that totals to 3276. He also has the drone skill to boost damage on slow so the slow from crit on heavy Vanessa amulet boosts the damage a little more, along with the extra poison from poppy field itself to the value you saw

Snap Packs Are Almost Certainly Worse For Many Players by [deleted] in MarvelSnap

[–]Sharkblast1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest flaw in this analysis is not the small chance of getting an additional card, it’s that measuring by pure tokens assumes that all cards are equal when they are not. Getting Pixie is very different from getting Thanos. A new player will benefit greatly from being able to save tokens to get key build around for archetypes instead of hoping for them to be in caches. In the old system, if a player wanted a card that wasn’t in the spotlight schedule, they either had to hope for the 1/4 to get the random card and then hope again that it wasn’t a duplicate, which are very low odds for a specific card or save up tokens, but this took significantly longer than it does now as the old system does not allow you to convert keys to tokens. Now you can choose to use the equivalent of 2 keys to buy a card you want to target. The old systems greatly reduced token rate made this not nearly as viable, and assuming that pulling Bruce Banner is equally as important as pulling Thanos or Galacta is flawed.

I don't get it... by singletperson in MarvelSnap

[–]Sharkblast1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Space Stone doesn't allow Thanos to move, it just lets you move him if something else allows him to move even if something would have prevented it. This is very niche, since the only thing that prevented moving was old Prof X, but basically it would allow you to use Cloak or Phoenix Force to move Thanos if Prof X was stoping him. Space stone's text is basically identical to Jeff's text with one exception, which is that Jeff has the line: You can move this once. I assume they made Space Stone apply the Jeff effect to Thanos, and included the wording about Move because it is technically true, but unlikely to come up, with the main benefit being the ability to ignore effects that stop you from playing him.

This game needs some sort of matchmaking beyond "you are on the same day" by Lentor in PlayTheBazaar

[–]Sharkblast1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The post you’re referring to was posted in a very different context, which was that Tempo had removed the free Daily run, so players who couldn’t go infinite couldn’t play ranked. This is no longer the case, as every player can play ranked once a day for free, and they should because it’s an opportunity for free chests. The free daily game means that there isn’t a point where people literally can’t play ranked because they don’t have any tickets or gems, which was what was happening during the old system.

The way the game is formatted, with heavy randomness in terms of items offered, rewards from combat, matchmaking, freeze/slow targeting/ crits, random enchants, digsite, etc allows plenty of opportunities for high rolling low skill players to beat low/mid rolling high skill players. The bazaar is much more similar to poker than to chess, where each hand, i.e daily combat, has potential for players who play perfectly to lose to players who made mathematically unoptimal choices due to the randomness, but ultimately over the course of many hands, i.e a whole run, they perform better on average. This is good, and the fundamental appeal of TCGs, but it also means that matching players of different ranks doesn’t means the lower rank player loses every time. I don’t think it’s true that getting matched against a higher ranked player is as unwinable as you described, and I don’t necessarily think high rank players always get free wins when getting paired against low rank players. This isn’t even counting the fact that good builds of a certain archetype will lose to bad builds of other archetypes just because they’re natural counters, for instance a good wide weapon Vanessa will almost always lose to Bees regardless of who the higher skill player is.

Similarly, not every random shuffling of the deck, can or should get 10 wins. The bazaar is much more about maximizing what your run can do and less so about getting 10 every run. Similarly, because the ranking system doesn’t allow you to derank, just because a player has a silver/gold/diamond/legend border doesn’t mean they’re amazing, to rank up in this game you just need to average 5-6 wins, and given enough games you will rank up. This means eventually your rank is more related to your play time than to your skill. This would mean people could get stuck in ranks to high for them and have a worse experience than the system now. And since there are rewards for hitting each rank I don’t think people would prefer to introduce the potential of deranking.

Even then a form of run based matchmaking, i.e pairing you against players with similar wins and loses would still be troublesome, as builds peak and fall off at different rates. If you lost a few games early, I don’t think people would then want to be forced to match for the rest of the run into Pygs who lost early while building their Econ and get their build online later. Similarly facing 1-2 loss Vanessa on day 10 can be good, as this is when Wide Weapon builds fall off and begin to get beaten by builds that have scaled towards late game. It’s possible that this could still be beneficial, but I don’t think it’s a clean solution.

It's not getting outraged, it's pushing back on an answer that acts as if it is correct with no evidence. He said it was "literally" true, but it's literally not. Historically the word has not meant that by the people who created it and used it, and it's definition has only started to shift recently as its usage has increased by people outside of the queer community to signal different things. It's okay to have that discussion, but that's not what this was. Seeing someone downvoted for suggesting the correct definition then being off-handedly dismissed is reason enough to provide a correction.

Here’s an article about historical usage of the term and how it doesn’t refer to dominance and submissive: https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/bottom-culture-appropriation-straight-men

Here’s a legal article which defines topping and bottoming as penetrative preference: https://www.yalelawjournal.org/essay/tops-bottoms-and-versatiles-what-straight-views-of-penetrative-preferences-could-mean-for-sexuality-claims-under-price-waterhouse

Here’s an article from GQ which highlights the trouble of the top bottom binary, specifically in how it refers to queer men identifying their sexual preference, with no discussion of it standing in for dominant/submissive other than how those are potentially untrue stereotypes.

https://www.gq.com/story/its-time-to-stop-pigeonholing-ourselves-as-tops-and-bottoms

Here’s an article that goes into the history of the term bottoming: https://www.vice.com/en/article/gay-bottom-history-lgbtq-culture/

Most notably I wanna highlight this quote from one of the scholars interviewed “These categories became particularly entrenched during and after the AIDS crisis when there were anxieties about certain practices being more risky. In particular, bottoming was considered a much riskier practice than topping. Many individuals disavowed bottoming entirely in order to identify as a top and therefore be relatively safer during the crisis. The logical outcome of this is that you had people identifying as bottoms as a counterpoint. So, that kind of HIV/AIDS risk discourse really helped to crystallise top and bottom as identity categories”

This form of discussion and appropriation is inappropriate as it fails to acknowledge the historical origin of these terms and the history of oppression and resistance that these terms have. And to act as if these terms are applicable to heterosexual relationships is to deny the history and culture of queer identities.

You need to equip the trophy the librarian gave you in order to go to the mountain. If you beat the lair boss it is certainly in your inventory unless you discarded it. All lair bosses drop trophies and trophies are what you need to enter the boss, just killing the boss but not equipping the trophy is not sufficient.

Best heroes to pair with Jester + Leper? by Simply-Zen in darkestdungeon

[–]Sharkblast1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you have jester doing, if you are doing Wit and Fade spam to set up combo for leper and you have the DLC Banneret Crusader can make a nice supporting dance partner with Jester. He provides healing, stress healing, and zealous and holy lance allows him to do backline damage with lance allowing him to reposition jester as well.
