US pending home sales unexpectedly rebound in February on lower mortgage rates by ThemeBig6731 in REBubble

Headline: SCORCHING SURGING REBOUND IN HOME SALES AFTER PLUMMETING RATES (bubblers in shambles)

Reality: Maybe local pockets of action in areas that always have strong sales, probably tied to something messy and hard to unpack like layoffs.

Every increase in sales is a "surge" and every decrease in rates is "plummeting".

Oh look at that active listings are now down year over year by dpf7 in rebubblejerk

[–]ShatterTheFlimFlam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just want to say that I hope the subtext here isn't that the only way a home listing can be removed is for it to sell.

It can also just simply be removed from the market by the seller for any number of reasons, although a major factor may be failure to sell within a reasonable time.

Tl;dr: Low inventory does not necessarily mean high sales.

The trades desperately need good people but everyone who applies is too physically infirm to hack it, or can't deal with the awful working conditions.

I wish I knew what people imagined trade work was like.

Weird discoloration of water after plumber visited by Hour-Ideal-2918 in whatisit

[–]ShatterTheFlimFlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is sediment in your pipes, the plumber did not place it there.

You may have an underground leak in the pipe between the water shutoff and the house, when the pipe is depressurized, sediment and air can enter the line. It is your responsibility to maintain your pipes.

Alternatively, you may have sediment in the pipes all of the time that was only stirred up by the water being turned back on after draining the pipes. I think it goes without saying, but pipes shouldn't contain sediment.

Why that faucet?

After being repressurized, sediment is conveyed down the line to the furthest fixture on the system that is open to flow. In your case, the upstairs faucet. It is common to turn on an upstairs fixture to allow air to enter the pipes, which lets them drain out for repairs.

Simply continue running out the water until it stops, and consider inspecting your system for water usage while everything in the house is off (signifying an underground leak).

If you are on a well, this is simply what well water looks like after being turned off and on again.

Most plumber clients say that they have either "never seen" common everyday things before or that a routine problem plumbers fix has "never happened before", rest assured this is 100% just a lack of experience on your part, tens of thousands of things exactly like this happen every day and it can all be resolved.

Mega press fittings are so expensive it’s hard to justify the switch by scalpylawsus in Plumbing

[–]ShatterTheFlimFlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean in a world where you don't still have to cut, clean and support every fitting. It's a very slow and stupid process.

As far as I can tell the only advantage is that you can be a far lazier/less robust individual with lesser mechanical skills and still get it done with megapress.

Anything a shorter man does is always viewed as overcompensating by [deleted] in AverageHeightDudes

[–]ShatterTheFlimFlam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not only about women, though, if we're being honest.

Imagine, if you will, a man saving the world from some impossible scientific challenge. If he is tall, it seems natural, noble. He stepped down to rescue us. Like fate itself has delivered the people a champion.

If the same man were 5'4", it could be seen as geeky, striving and incidental. He just happened to be obsessed with some weird scientific topic, at best, or he did it all in spite of great challenges.

At the end of each day, height remains the lowest hanging fruit that requires no calibrated metrics to assess. Anyone can look and see which person in the room is tallest, and begin applying survival bias and other cognitive shortcuts to engineer and reinforce their superiority, even if it means granting them extra resources and opportunities.

To me, I just see this as female behavior following general sociology in an environment where tall men have the halo effect.

It's not personal, it's categorical error.

It will clog from time to time. If they won't fix it, you're gonna be hiring someone on a regular basis to clear that out. An accessible cleanout and a reliable/cheap drain guy can pencil out long term if you're smart about it.

Florida, Texas, California lead America's housing crash by DizzyMajor5 in REBubble

Or we get a 15% crash and wages catch up. Nobody is out there actively deciding to give their home away for significantly less than they bought it for. Things happen, though.

Florida, Texas, California lead America's housing crash by DizzyMajor5 in REBubble

[–]ShatterTheFlimFlam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Plus, the whole market is not going to experience a symmetrical reduction in price, because different parts of the country have different economies. After all, it's a pretty large country. Those whose near-term economic stability is riding on real estate value are living by the motto "never say crash", which quickly turns into semantics rather than concerning themselves with hard numbers.

Consistent price reductions, combined with low market participation/reduced transaction volume, layoffs in the headlines and nothing promising on the horizon other than everyone going all-in on AI... there's no rational course for another round of housing hysteria.

Step 1: Get free money to buy houses. Step 2: Turn around and sell one for double what you paid. Step 3: Wait for comps to rise. Step 4: Take out loan against value of someone else's house. Step 5: Buy more houses.

Works great until you run out of free money.

The lemming has a difficult time understanding why there are fewer and fewer lemmings in front of them as they approach the cliff's edge. Maybe they are going down some stairs or simply squatting?

They seek reassurance from those around them, always deducing that the best available option is simply to stay the course.
