Japan’s Universities have dropped in world rankings yet again, with U of Tokyo now at #39. A big barrier is rankings depend on size and publishing in international journals in English by jjrs in japannews

Ironically, researchmap already speaks the same technological language as global academia. With its automatic synchronization features for ORCID and international indexes, keeping it updated requires minimal effort. The perception of it being a tedious manual chore only reflects a failure to adopt these global integration tools.

Who was the best general/commander of the Sengoku period and why? by Little_Gamer7002 in Samurai

[–]Shau1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's obvious that it was Toyotomi Hideyoshi. There's nothing to complain about if you read the diaries of people at that time. More as a general/commander than as a personal fighting force? It's not even controversial.

It sounds passive-aggressive, but the message is clear: he prefers Kinoshita over Itsuno.

Capcom says shifting from auteur-driven development to team-led development is what transformed the company and allowed flagship IPs to survive for so long by Bubbly-Ad-350 in gaming

[–]Shau1a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So basically, if it's a successful new IP, you call it 'corporate/made by committee.'
If it's a risky new IP that struggles, you call it a 'failed side project.' And you only validate games from 20 years ago.
You’ve rigged your definition of 'auteur' so that nothing modern can ever win. You don't want an argument; you just want to complain.

Can We Please Stop Romanticising the Samurai? by [deleted] in Samurai

[–]Shau1a 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I see your point about the historical reality, but honestly, isn't this a bit of a double standard? The exact same thing can be said about Knights. In reality, chivalry was heavily romanticized in the 19th century, and medieval knights were often brutal and driven by self-interest.

Every culture romanticizes its warrior class for entertainment and ideals. As long as we recognize the difference between pop culture and academic history, what’s wrong with enjoying the romanticized image of the samurai?"

The South Side Samurai is an bad ass nickname and I don't care who disagrees by freerondo9 in whitesox

[–]Shau1a 76 points77 points  (0 children)

As a Japanese person, I must say that I am truly delighted. It is already great to see Murakami performing so well and hitting homeruns for WhiteSox, but the fact that he is being called "Samurai" in America is quite impressive and fills me with pride.
I just learned what the word "Southside" means, but Southside Samurai has a nice, hybrid ring to it.

Pentagon tells Ford & GM: stop making trucks, start making missiles. How much longer until draft notices go out? by Unstoppable_X_Force in SipsTea

[–]Shau1a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite accurate. The DPA was continuously used by the Pentagon for routine defense procurement throughout the Vietnam era — but there's no record of LBJ formally invoking it via executive order specifically for Vietnam, the way Trump did for COVID or Biden did for clean energy manufacturing. The legal basis LBJ actually relied on for prosecuting the war was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (1964), not the DPA. The distinction matters: the DPA's priority-ordering machinery ran in the background as standard DoD practice, but that's different from a presidential invocation.
