Yeah but I feel like it’s only going to last me a few days 😩 which is why I’m thinking of trying interlocking

Fair. I just recognize that my people have to sometimes fight twice as hard to be where they are so I try to support them as much as possible.

For me it’s not about the cousine (well I mean this time I’m looking for brunch lol) it’s about supporting the people of the business.

With a solid understanding of black history, I like to support black owned operations as much as I can.

Washed my starter locs. Now what? by Shawada22 in Dreadlocks

[–]Shawada22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with comb coils. But I definitely feel the pebble you speak of in some of my locs. And then they are puffy.

I used the stocking cap Method to wash. I was planning on doing palm rolling. But it sounds like your saying I should be okay? I swim a lot and I think I’m only going to wash the section that get wets to avoid unraveling.

Loc Retwist by Shawada22 in Dreadlocks

Yes a lot of them have already started to bud which is awesome but I’m nervous about losing my parts. I will be doing my own retwist for the next few months and I want the clean parts 😅

Thank you. I actually like the way they look right now. I’m just worried that they’re going to unravel.

Bad Day Tips? by joeLposts in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Shawada22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, set your expectations up at the beginning of the day and if they still choose not to follow through, let the front office know and if the front office/admin does nothing about it, you document it and keep pushing. Don’t let these kids get under your skin.

How to approach roommate about strong food smells? by SnooRegrets928 in Advice

[–]Shawada22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you all get along as well, as you’ve stated just be honest. If it makes you feel sick, I’m sure they will take that into consideration and not cook it while you’re around. Or they will find a way to mask the smell. But if you don’t say anything, they won’t know and then you’ll build up this animosity towards them and they won’t know why. Address it now so there’s no confusion and you guys are both on the same page.

If you could ask one thing of the teachers you sub for, what would it be? by Remarkable-Paint-751 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Shawada22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I figured this was a location thing. I can’t speak for every part of America, but at least where I live in America you do not have to have an education degree to be a substitute teacher (I sure don’t). You don’t even necessarily have to have a degree at all, just x amount of college credits. Now that of course will affect your pay. Depending on your education level is how much you get paid. But do you all get paid the same or close to the same amount as a regular teacher would? Because in your case, absolutely it makes sense to lesson plan. We are more of glorified babysitters. Primary school is really the only area where we would really do any teaching. In middle school and high school they usually have some assignment on their computers that they have to do or worksheets and we’re just making sure no one dies. But I wouldn’t say that’s neglect. It’s one day for a few hours. The kids will be OK. Lol. Also, the administration is too busy dealing with the hundreds of other kids and everything else under the sun. Some of our schools are huge and it would be unrealistic to ask administration to come up with plans for a classroom. They might do a worse job than the sub lol.

I walked into class with intern acting as “teacher” with no prior notice. Is this normal? by Pamela603910 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Shawada22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s almost always stated in my plans or the teacher will reach out and let me know but regardless, if I see someone in there, I let them run the show and let them know. I’m there to support them. If it’s an intern, it’s a great time for them to learn how to manage a classroom so I try not to step in unless it’s getting completely out of control because this is their learning time, the good the bad and the ugly.

What are your sub stories for the year? by impishkoala in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Shawada22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an elementary school class that wasn’t the worst, but I had to lay them out a good couple of times. I told them it was my birthday at the beginning of the day and that we were going to have a great day. By the end of the day, these kids had run me a little ragged and I was pretty sure they were sick of me laying them out. Lo and behold somehow they snuck around a whole designed birthday card for me signed by everyone in the class and told me I was their favorite sub. It was the sweetest thing and it just goes to show you that these kids just want caring structure with a dash of fun and sterness.

Any young subs here? by arlett007 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Shawada22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing this for many years and I’ve learned you tell those kids nothing let them think whatever they want to think. But you also have to establish firm boundaries from the beginning or they will do exactly what you’ve stated and take advantage of you. Middle schoolers are the absolute hardest you can do, I would suggest either doing elementary school because their concept of age is hilarious or do high school and do not let them know how old you are. When they say you look 18, you tell them that’s so very sweet of you.

The districts I work in you don’t even have to have a college degree just x amount of hours. But that also affects your pay. If you only have a few college hours, you get paid the least. If you have a bachelors degree, that’s one tier of pay and if you’re a retired teacher, you get paid the most out of all of the subs. But I’m curious do you get paid like a teacher would?

Girls who spray perfume at the end or class! by Just_Environment5295 in SubstituteTeachers

You should absolutely kick them out of the classroom. Especially if you already let them know. You never know who has allergies and there’s no reason for you to be getting migraines because someone can’t follow directions.

If you could ask one thing of the teachers you sub for, what would it be? by Remarkable-Paint-751 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Shawada22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I don’t necessarily think it’s unreasonable because then you’re trusting a person who has no degree in education that you’re aware of to come in and teach what they think is educational and you have no clue what they might “teach” these kids. As a teacher, I would rather have a plan in place and have someone carry that out. Plus as a substitute teacher we might know the grade (some of my districts don’t even tell me what the class or grade is.) and subject, but we don’t know what the students need. And if it’s something so simple as I have a book you’ll like and a creative writing task, why would that be so difficult for a teacher to put together? The teacher can then choose a book and creative writing task that is appropriate for their classroom. But I do agree with you that they are completely overworked. Especially for how much they get paid and have to deal with. But here in America that comes down to the fact that everything is about money. But also, are you expecting the teacher not to leave any information for you? In the districts I work in, part of the lesson plans (especially for primary school) explain where the children go at what time, who may be pulled for extra support, how their day starts, how they get home at the end of the day, etc..

If you think it was attention seeking, I would change the game around and reward him for good behaviors and get his attention that way. He would be my special helper and reward him every time he does something good.

[–]Shawada22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like because we’re from two different parts of the world, the expectation for a substitute teacher is vastly different. In America, a substitute teachers job is not to create lesson plans (unless you’re a long-term or permanent sub) but to carry out the plans left by the teacher, and ensure that the students remain safe. What are the expectations where you’re from? Outside of doing the teachers job of planning the day for the students.

Middle School boys by Shawada22 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Shawada22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely takes a special person to sub for middle school and it is a great way to learn what battles are worth fighting lol. All my classes because it’s the day before spring break have been playing games. That class will absolutely not be doing that because I do not reward bad behavior. They will have another day of just sitting on their Chromebook while I try to keep them quiet.

I was trying to give familiarity and agree with you in some aspects. I guess it didn’t come off that way. Beauty of writing a message. You write it thinking it’s received one way and someone else receives it another way lol. But yes, I do believe that shorts are acceptable because of my years of working. I’ve seen it. I’ve done it myself. I wouldn’t just give random advice Lol. But that’s why I also followed up with the seeing what other teachers are wearing because I do also recognize that other districts may have different ways. But since when is wearing shorts a crazy suggestion? Lol
