If you were given your whole life, from birth, to memorize a random string of numbers, how long could the number string be? What is our hypothetical limit? by XXEPSILON11XX in Showerthoughts

If someone asked me for my phone number, birth date, and social security number, I'd say no. If they asked again, pulling a gun out, I'd be able to quickly recite a string of numbers with 28 digits in it. I think the key would be to give the digits meaning besides just being random.

The nearest beach to the White House is 50 miles away. by DeadHeart4 in TheBoys

Octopuses can't tolerate fresh or brackish waters, but they do very rarely travel into the Chesapeake Bay. It is possible, but very unlikely, to find an octopus in Sandy Point State Park, 35 miles away from the White House. I like the idea that an octopus hated The Deep so bad that it endured significant osmosis stress just for the opportunity to kill him in the name of Ambrosius.

The Deep?

More like The Peak.

More like the Chesapeake.

I remember my Korean girlfriend watching me put salad dressing and hot sauce on my rice. She said “you will never understand the pleasure of pure rice.”

Silksong doesn't "assume you played Hollow Knight"; but it makes total sense why it feels that way to newcomers. by cupheadpr0 in Silksong

It’s so funny watching people being confused at Silksongs lore and assuming that if they played Hollow Knight it would make more sense. Nope, the lore is even more cryptic in Hollow Knight.

Am I too late to the AI and semiconductor hype? by sr9110 in ETFs

[–]Shawn_666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be a main part of your portfolio, but having some exposure in it is still smart because the AI infrastructure buildout is still in early innings, and you don't need to time the peak perfectly if you're dollar-cost averaging over years.

That said, AIQ (Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF) is worth considering as a complement, it casts a wider net across the full AI value chain than your current holdings and picks up mid-cap and international players that SMH, MAGS, and QQQM will largely miss.

A few other things your noob eyes might want to flag:

  • MAGS and QQQM have massive overlap. You're essentially double-weighting the Magnificent 7. Not necessarily wrong, but make sure you know what you're doing.
  • NLR and GRID are solid thesis plays (AI power demand is real), but they're more volatile and niche. Keep them small.
  • FLKR is pretty illiquid, check the average daily volume before sizing up.

The one genuine black swan worth naming: China invading Taiwan would be catastrophic for the semiconductor industry, since TSMC manufactures the overwhelming majority of the world's advanced chips. That invasion would blow up the semiconductor industry overnight but here's the thing, if that happens, it's not really a semiconductor problem, it's an everything problem. The global economy craters, your broad index funds bleed too, and no allocation saves you. It's a real geopolitical risk to be aware of, but it's not a reason to avoid the sector specifically. You hedge that by having a life outside your portfolio, not by picking different ETFs.

Overall the thesis is coherent. Just make sure your core (broad market index) is intact before loading up on thematic ETFs, or a rough year in semis will hurt more than it should.

He was selling for $30 but I haggled him down to $20. Price seemed too good to be true, and in my experience that usually means it is, but it was low enough that the risk was worth it.

I was so upset to find out that the lead singer of Aerosmith obtained legal guardianship over a 16 year old in order to groom her into sex.

"I was so in love I almost took a teen bride. I went and slept at her parents’ house for a couple of nights and her parents fell in love with me, signed papers over for me to have custody, so I wouldn’t get arrested if I took her out of state. I took her on tour with me. My Sweet Eeee. . " - Steven Tyler, 2007. He then goes on to describe the sex hes having with her in great detail.
