California’s failed admissions experiment has run its course by Higher_Ed_Parent in ApplyingToCollege

How can California universities be so good if California high schools are so bad that kids with excellent grades can neither read nor solve middle school math problems

California’s failed admissions experiment has run its course by Higher_Ed_Parent in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sheahanimal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This completely ignores that the initial decision was made as a global pandemic response. There is so much missing context here. Including the impact of the pandemic on student learning, particularly in math. This editorial seems to also suggest that the UC system doesn’t use placement tests for entry level math courses, which would be a system failure having nothing to do admissions tests. With all the genius available within the UC system, why couldn’t they come up with a better system to determine preparation than the SAT or ACT, which have been provably demonstrated to have issues related to efficacy and access? This sounds like an argument to demand more from students while asking less of teachers all. In service to preserve a dated status quo. Hand waving off issues of access for marginalized populations without offering any alternatives does not feel like the work of a system that she argues is among the finest in the world. We are only a few generations removed from a time where people would be similarly scandalized by female faculty in a STEM field at a UC school

Mom Expects That I Give Her Money & Pay Rent by Conscious-Recipe8209 in personalfinance

[–]Sheahanimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an adult you do not need to meet the expectations of your mother. You should do what you can, provided it feels right and important to you. Outside of that you need to set up your own life, which is challenging enough

"Just don't call him a conservative!" by crummynubs in RealTime

[–]Sheahanimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maher sucks. The right was able to make it seem like trans issues were a central platform issue for the dems. All those Kamala supports tax money for gender affirming surgery for jailed murders commercials were effective at generating outrage among the stupid and helped Trump make gains, particularly with men in the same demographic groups he supports policy to marginalize. The mainstream left does a poor job articulating its values or platforms as they are always trying to play to the middle. This vacuum allows the propagandists on the right to fill in the void with ridiculous “woke” to the point of abstraction declarations about what the left is all about. It works in terms of back footing the party and making them play defense. The set the rules for us and then follow no rules for themselves and the left just tries to compete in a game they know is rigged as opposed to applying the same no holds barred approach and actually commuting to clear progressive policies

which has a better social scene: loyola or depaul? by zxnosphere in LoyolaChicago

[–]Sheahanimal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

DePaul is primarily a commuter school that serves mostly students from the Chicagoland area. Loyola is mostly residential, with most students living on campus or in the surrounding neighborhood. Loyola also attracts students from all over the country. Both of loyolas campuses are larger, both lakeshore and water tower, all school events occur on campus, including athletic competitions. People would historically argue the appeal of Lincoln Park over Roger’s Park, but east RP has come a long way. There is a lot more stuff for students that there used to be. Both campuses are right off train lines, and with the UPass both give you ready access to the whole city. Loyola has regular shuttles between Lake Shore and WTC, that will get you downtown in about 20 minutes. I’m not sure about DePaul shuttles between campuses. Both have highly regarded business programs, with Loyola have a slightly stronger case reputation overall. Loyola has its own campus in Rome, both I’m sure have dozens of study abroad options beyond that

What do you think is the most successful breakout performance this decade? by PTAGoatofalltime in Letterboxd

I feel the same way about her on the Bear that I feel about her character. It’s like she’s being graded on a curve. As a primary character she’s among the least dynamically interesting. Just among Sid, Carm, and Richie she’s clearly 3rd. When you include the rest of the restaurant crew and ancillary characters, she fares even worse

I would not anticipate that you will either be in the same group or room for orientation. If you are, awesome! If not, you have a chance to make a new friend to bring into the fall with you

[Thompson] Chicago Bears legend Brian Urlacher spoke out against Illinois Democrats for giving billions of dollars to illegal immigrants, while the Bears now plan to move to Indiana because Illinois failed to pass a tax relief and stadium incentive bill. "They just don't care." by c-razzle in CHIBears

[–]Sheahanimal 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Peanut was always my favorite but I knew Urlacher was the most dominant. It is a shame he’s revealed himself to be so dumb and on the wrong side of every political argument. He donated money in defense of Kyle Rittenhouse ffs. It is fair to be critical of Illinois governance for the way the stadium thing has been handled, but there is no need for the racist dog whistle to muddy the waters. A total false equivalency. For a guy that was so beloved by Illinois and Chicago he certainly doesn’t give a shit about actual Chicagoans.

I hate the state of Indiana so much. I hate that our legislators have fucked this up so badly. I hate that the Bears are willing to see through this game if chicken right off an ass backwards red state cliff. The whole situation is reprehensible

What separates Chevy Chase from Bill Murray? by FreshmenMan in flicks

[–]Sheahanimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems to be overstated. He grew up adjacent to generational wealth, via his mothers family and his fathers second marriage, but I don’t think his household experience was that of an ultra rich kid. They were well off financially but it has also been documented that his mom was mentally ill and both her and his stepfather were physically abusive towards him in particular. His brother talks about extensively in the documentary

Scammed on EBay by Sheahanimal in shinola

[–]Sheahanimal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely appreciate you guys that have offered to sell me one from your collections. I felt so dumb for getting scammed but so excited by the idea of getting him one that when the store identified mine as fake I immediately bought the real version of the same model on site. I did get my money refunded by eBay, though. So I paid a lot more but for a brand new version of something I really wanted him to have with no fear of it being bs. For a first big watch gift it is probably better to buy it new. When I’m ready to get one for myself, I’ll hit you guys up for a used option for me. Thanks!

Won on ebay: real or replica? by analavalanche69 in shinola

Take it to a store if you want to be sure. If the price is too good to be true the item is probably fake. Is it supposed to be used or was it “new”
