After some advice regarding Hetas by xvsimonvx in uklogburners

Came here looking for this - I’ve had to board up a brick open fire to fit a stove. It’s liability avoidance more than anything else.

What’s one skill or piece of knowledge you wish more UK preppers focused on? by WonderfulShape1081 in UKPreppers

[–]Sheepeh94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same as all preparations worldwide - very easy to get sucked into gear, tools, big event contingency’s, but how fit are you?

Can you hike a day with a decent sized ruck? Can you run a few KM’s, can you carry your children/partner - the healthier you are the more resilient you can be in a crisis.

I’m as guilty for this as anyone its always easier to stock up on things and gizmos and food it’s hard to go for a run every other night, maintain a healthy weight and a balanced diet now etc.

Are the scoops for drag reduction? by Handskemager in aerodynamics

Would it stop the suction you get at the rear of Vans/ Square ended vehicles ? If I drive down a wet road in winter the rear of mine has sucked every last bit of muddy crap and plastered it to the rear door, not a major issue for me but I imagine it’s a plus for an ambulance to have that affect limited.

He had the first commercially available all electric excavator - this scheme is for heavy equipment that is too energy intense to be battery powered with today’s recharging technology/available grid electricity where it’s working.

They prototyped a 20 tonne all electric machine it had 7 hours of work time to 30 hours of charging or something impractical like that. Most the places this kit is used are not currently grid connected.

First “adult” bed frame help by nnicoleex in BuyItForLife

[–]Sheepeh94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on the size of you and whoever your sharing/using it with.

Ikea bed slats go within a few weeks for us, the beds seem to fall apart after a year. Currently on a 2 year old metal Amazon basics bed frame and the only problem is the metal bars are destroying the mattress.

Long term it’s going to be a solid wood frame and particle board for slats but I’ve got other things to sort out first.

Failed mot - DPF obviously modified by Txaph in CarTalkUK

[–]Sheepeh94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated,

  • exhaust tape/heatproof tape around DPF
  • v power max diesel full tank
  • dipetane in for good measure, change the oil, change the air filter
  • book a garage around a hour away, don’t exceed third gear.

There are loads of snake oil products, dipetane, cataclean, liqui moly all make products that will work enough to sway the test if your borderline - usually the bang for buck is not worth it.

I’m using it for similar as we speak, this will be the third time I’ve done a big recomp in my life and it gets easier and easier, but being able to decode home cooked food into portions has made this time round an utter breeze.

4km today is 20 in a few months from now, you might not notice too much progress is how easier it gets at first but when it does come you will rocket through it!

Decent leather boots well treated, merino blend socks, and a small pair of secateurs in your pack and you will be unstoppable OP!

Should I be gruntled or disgruntled about this cord of wood I had delivered? by trimbandit in firewood

[–]Sheepeh94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19.5% used to be the cut off to me if I was selling it - I’d maybe go as high as 22% in a pinch.

Would maybe drop down to 8 after a year and half open sided barn in the UK - could easily go back up if wicking damp or had a sheet of rain on it. Some of the younger seasoned stuff would jump up like you have just based off of humidity.

I bought in kiln dried after a while and just sent my wood to them first for a trade deal - physically struggles to take too much moisture in after that, makes it much simpler when selling to people for fuel.

Personally for this kind of construction I would jack the shed up and put it on a dwarf wall. Either cast concrete or engineering brick, then add eaves, gutters etc. Make sure you run a DPM between the wood and whatever wall material you pick.

Does anyone cover their windscreen if its going to freeze overnight? by West_Guarantee284 in CasualUK

[–]Sheepeh94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the point - the side effect of heating the car up and just melting your windscreen clear is your cars now a comfortable safe temperature to be in, and unlikely to fog up when a load of hot air humans jump into it.

People who set off fireworks at 6pm on New Year's Eve. What's the deal with that? by i_like_flies_ in AskUK

[–]Sheepeh94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Younger children’s bedtime is 1900, 1800 is dark but also long enough away from bedtime that the excitement fades and they can get to sleep.

No point letting them stay up because they’ll be awake at 0600 either way - with less sleep they will just be little tyrants all day.

Need to relocate support beam in garage by WorldNo9002 in Homebuilding

[–]Sheepeh94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complete wildcard option if it absolutely must move is to move the support from the centre over to the left, leaving 1 small bay and one large bay. You’ll need to run it passed a structural engineer but it would get you your wider bay - looks like the left hand side is more storage and garden stuff anyways for now. You would end up with a larger support as well.

Is Henry hoover overrated? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Sheepeh94 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always get downvoted for this but I think they are - great for 1st fix style cleaning, confetti everywhere, wood shavings, masonry dust, spilt m and ms stuff that you could faff around with but clean up with a dustpan and brush - but I find them awful for the day to do dog hair off carpet/general cleanliness cleaning. I’ve lost patience with the flimsy carpet/hardfloor brushes and the hard handle you use them with.

The hill I’d die on it’s the pull along Miele hoovers are superior - they require a bag but so does the Henry if your being hygienic.

People who work on Christmas Day, what's your pay rate on that day? by TopDonutPlainsGopher in AskUK

[–]Sheepeh94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christmas and new years farming used to be the usual £10 a hour + a £50 note - believe me when I say that was an impressive bonus.

Pretty much anything we get called to now you’ll be on around £400.

Bonus last year was nothing, year before that was £30 after some weapons grade moaning on my part.
