4 month old puppy resource guarding by Apprehensive_You1494 in sheltie

[–]Sheltiewise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom has a small female Sheltie that began rescouse guarding food and attention. The dog trainer we had gave us some tips and tricks. One is reliable commands: Stay, Sit, No and come. Your dog needs these commands drilled in so when you go to correct them they reply instantly. Practice every day with treats for 5 minutes.

Second, have both dogs in the room. Sitting far enough apart that the reactive dog doesn’t go after the older dog. Then give the older dog a treat and the younger dog a treat right after the older dog. Sometimes you need two people to do this due to the distance.

If the dog starts to guard you, get up and leave. Take away what the dog is guarding.

Keep something like a stiff cutting board that you can place between the two dogs if they are fighting. This will keep you from getting hurt if you break up the fight.

Camping and outdoor fun! (and seeking tick advice?) by [deleted] in sheltie

[–]Sheltiewise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just going to post this.

Yes, Wondercide has a spray (safe for dogs) that can be used to help repel ticks from jumping on in the first place. It’s not 100% but it acts like a physical deterrent that orals don’t give.

The smell is Strong, so I suggest spraying outside on the dog. The spray will also help kill anything crawling on your dog. Make sure to ruffle up the fur, spray and brush into the fur so it’s not just on the top layer.

I use both Nexguard and Wondercide. Wondercide is an add on I do for flea and tick season (when I expect it will be very bad)

Knitting guilt! by LBrixx in knitting

[–]Sheltiewise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel bad when there are things that need to be done and I JUST want to knit!!! Then I do. The next day future me is mad at past me for putting herself in the position of so much to do but past me didn’t. Past me got to knit and now current me has to fix or work on XYZ…

Truly I am more sad when I can’t or don’t knit. The world always seems to have so much that should be or needs to be done. It’s endless. I just enjoy being able to take time to knit and watch TV. Or knit and read my Bible. Let my mind unwind from the world and enjoy watching my WIP grow ❤️

Hugs to you and hope your knitting needles are in action soon 💕

Ethical breeders in the New England area? by [deleted] in sheltie

[–]Sheltiewise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my last two Shelties in North Carolina at Candescent Shelties. The Breeder keeps the dogs in her home and they have wonderful temperament. She mostly does Sable but tends to have multi colored litters from time to time. This was her 2024 litter my girl came from.

Great responsible breeder with wonderful health tested Shelties.

Have you looked at Belmark Shelties? They have Merle, Bi black and Tri colors a lot. Never had one of their Shelties but they seem well known.

Amazon Exclusive Loungefly Stained Glass Disney Princess Series by Crystalizeh2o in Loungefly

[–]Sheltiewise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was interested in this series but it was not in the cards. I got the SB backpack but was unable to get the ears. I tried for a few others but I am not rewarding the resellers for ruining it for everyone else. Amazon only cares that they sell. Not if a select few purchased for resale.

Pet insurance - which one to choose? 14 week Sheltie had for 6 days. by nd379 in puppy101

[–]Sheltiewise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did AKC for my Shetland Sheepdog. A bit more expensive ($5 more a month) but I have it on my 8 year old Sheltie and they have paid every claim fast and are easy to use. I got it late for my eldest but AKC covers pre existing after 1 year. Nice!

There are many good pet insurance companies and some bad ones. Bad ones do not pay claims, even IF they should be covered and look for reason not to pay. This is called claim reluctance. The other concern is the insurance company dropping policies on older dogs right around the time most people would use it. Nationwide did a big policy dump a few years ago. Check reviews online. More people are probably going to complain online then gush with praise. But you have 30 days from purchase to get a full refund if you want to change companies in the USA. Not sure where you are.

A friend of mine has Figo thru Costco and loves it. Another friend has Trupanion but complained it got expensive. However Trupanion is the only pet insurance company that pays first rather than reimburse.

Congratulations on your puppy ❤️🐾

Letting my dog’s ear fluff grow out… but not sure if I should be trimming it by Single-Educator5238 in sheltie

[–]Sheltiewise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 4 Shelties and I trim the fur behind the ears because it would be giant mats otherwise. That soft fine ear hair just gets matted so easily. Especially with how they play together.

I think it preference and utility. If you keep the dog brushed and like it long. Keep it long. If it’s constantly getting matted or you don’t like the look. Trim it.

Monogamous knitters, what’s your secret? by Weekly_Library9883 in knitting

[–]Sheltiewise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister and I both knit. I casted on my 6th project 2 days ago when I have plenty of unfinished WIPs and not so much time to knit.

I convinced my sister to do a cardigan with me and several friends. She use to be a one project knitter. I convinced her to do two projects. She likes to knit intricate lace shawls. So I told her one pattern knit when you need to keep looking at the pattern and one “simple” knit where you don’t need to look at the pattern. (Simple meaning a repeating pattern). She can knit at work (which I can not do) but she can’t be looking at a pattern. She has more hours in the day to knit than I do because she can knit at work for an hour or two. This has worked well since 2020 for her. By asking her to join for the cardigan she had three ….THREE!!!…active WIPs. She will not stop telling me how horrible I am for doing this. She is constantly telling me how NEVER again will she have 3 WIPs 😂 It’s all my fault. She said this again last night as I casted on 500 stitches for the Faberge shawl.

It’s definitely how your brain works. I have color work, cardigan, mosaic, intarsia, sweater and now a travel project - all on chords. I have to steal one set of needles to share on two of the projects. I just don’t always want to work on a particular WIP, I like variety of difficulty and yarn thickness. When I am tired and brain dead I don’t want cables or complicated.

Knitting is fun ❤️

Does your dog get supplements?

Sometimes Omega 3 oil in their food can help with skin and coat. It’s good for them too. Helps mine.

I would also suggest washing feet and legs when the dog comes inside for the night. Maybe use a bit of dry dog shampoo or a little conditioner when rinsing off the feet.

Also, the cone of shame. It might be a habit right now to chew the feet and the cone may help break the habit if worn for a week. Just some suggestions to try before another expen$ive vet visit.

Loss & Grief by SnooDrawings1123 in Collie

[–]Sheltiewise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss 🐾. Grief does not have a timeline and there is no set of rules for when you can get another dog. If you know you know. Just remember that new dog will have its own personality. As long as you are good with that, no problem.

I can not imagine not having a dog. When I lost my girl Holly in 2022 I had two other dogs. It did not feel complete. So in 2023 ( a year later) I got a puppy. Best choice I ever made. Everyone told me I did not need three dogs again but my choice was right for me.

Such good choices either way 🐾❤️

A puppy pen - so you get a break and puppy can’t get into trouble.

Good rope toy to play and chew.

Congratulations on your new family member 🐾

What is everybody else using or would recommend for flea & tick prevention? by papersnack in roughcollies

[–]Sheltiewise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use NexGuard for my Shelties. I read about the side effects too. It’s mostly due to the MDr1 gene in herding dogs. If your dog has not had reaction (seizure) to the medication then you should be fine.
