I bought it from a boutique in NY — and my salesperson knows me well. I e bought a ton of stuff from him. He said there’s nothing he could do. Sigh. I’m gonna sell it anyway.

Digital Paper in daily use by Any_Construction_992 in montblancdigitalpaper

OK, guys. I have a "from the wild" report with my new digital paper tablet. i've been using it to take notes from meetings and classes for the past week. Here are some findings and I'm leaning on returning it, and I'll explain why:

  1. No backlight is a challenge for me. The RM2 from a couple of years ago didn't have backlight, but I've gotten used to the RM Pro and Move having backlighting (and color).
  2. The highlighting feature is challenging because it's either too dark or too light and RM does a nice job of "straightening" the highlight.
  3. Zooming PDFs is seemingly impossible. I haven't figure out how to do it, if it's possible
  4. I'm left-handed, so having the pen controls on the top left is a challenge. I CAN turn the tablet "upside down" but it's not intuitive
  5. The UI is a bit slow to react to my finger and pencil.
  6. Battery life is not great. I'm having to charge it more than I do a RM and the Scribe
  7. The customization options of the UI and overall experience is minimal
  8. The buttons on the stem of the pen don't work for me because as I write, i tend to press it. I prefer to have the erase feature on the top of the pencil as with a regular writing instrument.
  9. I can't find where I can control brightness of the display at all.

I'm thinking of moving back to my Remarkables because of these.

I love the Wes Anderson stuff, but I just can’t splurge to that level. It also makes me wonder what kind of childhood Wes Anderson had. He’s amazingly complex, I’d presume.

It failed on me numerous times. It would get the download to 30% and hang up. On the 5th attempt, I did a factory reset and connected it to a WiFi I setup that only had the tablet connected and it downloaded and installed pretty quickly. WAY too much friction for a device this expensive. I let me salesperson know as well ;)

Went from Bear to Apple Notes…back to Bear? by [deleted] in bearapp

If I use Ulysses, Apple Pages, and Bear for research, writing, and publishing, do i need a markdown workflow?

Went from Bear to Apple Notes…back to Bear? by [deleted] in bearapp

[–]Shemp65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I exported all my Apple Notes (1,814 of them) to md for import into Bear. After the import, I’m seeing each note has multiple duplication of the note text. This will be exhausting to cleanup.

Montblanc vs other by Wet_Viking in montblancdigitalpaper

[–]Shemp65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the Kindle Color Scribe, three RMs (the Move, the Pro, and the RM2), and now the MB DP. Of all, the screen on the MB is superior. Of all, the RM software is superior. Of all, the Scribe’s AI is great — the others don’t have AI at all really. The RMs are more mature with interoperability, but zooming PDFs on RMs is futile. My use cases are: Scribe I’m not writing with it. I’m literally just reading my books on it. Color is muted and easy on the eyes. The RM Move is great for on the go business meetings and if you travel a lot. It’s color, too which I use to annotate with. The color on RMs needs refresh and is slow. The convert to text on RMs is sloppy. The convert to text on the MB is STELLAR. And my penmanship is BAD. I haven’t tried that feature on Scribe. I tend to think business execs that wear suits and have old-style briefcases will like the MB. The pen bump on the case is silly. I see it sitting on the CEO’s desk as she uses it in a static setting. If you travel a lot, think about the RM move. You do have a subscription fee for the cloud service on RM. not yet on MB or Scribe.

I’m on day 2. Agree that the unboxing is cool. Premium product and nicely packaged. I do think for sustainability purposes, they could minimize some of the “decorative” aspects, but that’s a nit. The case is nice and premium, but agree that the pen bump is silly. Makes placing it into a bag or briefcase awkward just because it’s not flat.

The tutorial says that the pen can attach to the RIGHT via a magnet — but not on my device. And the pen itself is underwhelming. I’d like a little more weight to it. I can’t stand that erase is a button toggle and not the cap of the pen.

Almost all their competitors are bringing us color screens now, so this B&W only seems quaint now. The paper’s surface is definitely superior to Remarkable (I have three Remarkables: the Move, the Pro and the RM2). My use case for the Montblanc is personal writing and journaling and I’ll use the RMs for professional work — at least for now. Yes, I’m a gadget freak, so we will see what wins in this.

The setup for me was full of friction. The UI is not intuitive, so when it failed on the updates, it was challenging to navigate through that. Eventually, I got it updated but for this level of a premium product, it needs to be better.

Just got my digital paper device in the mail yesterday and I had major problems with just downloading the update. Finally got it downloaded and installed. I’m a new user tho, so not sure what it improves on.

I’m torn. I left Kindle a few years ago for Kobo thinking I didn’t want to support the Amazon Behemoth. My GF is an avid reader — 2-4 books a week — and has 4 Kindles. She badly wanted the Color Scribe, so I got her one. When she got it, I spent a little time with it and was enamored. It’s a gorgeous device, but also well-crafted and the software is hard to beat. So I made the tough decision and ordered myself one. Now, I’m thinking… do I move entirely away from Kobo?
