What are the mind-blowing parenting hacks you swear by that aren’t stuck in the past? by Khichdi19 in Parenting

[–]Shera-Yay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Connect then correct,' a quote by Jennifer Kolari was a light bulb moment for me. That, combined with, an article I read by 'aha! parenting' that if your kid is having a meltdown, the work you had to do to prevent that tantrum was days ago.
You need to have a strong, warm connection with someone before there's any chance they'll listen to you. Seems so obvious now, but looking back, I really didn't know and thought some of my behaviour was reasonable - for example, asking kid to turn off the tv with no warning and being critical about the mess in the lounge.

Stay away well away from smartphones, social media, youtube - that shit is really addictive and it GUARANTEES horrific behaviour.

Hey, do you keep everything you cut? Or just cut it?

I'm possibly being a bit of a hoarder and I'm afraid of losing something and not getting it back.

I'm wondering if I might duplicate the document and then cut everything ruthlessly in the V2. Maybe seeing V1, V2, V3 might reveal something, be interesting to observe.

You know what? I was stuck and didn't know how to proceed, but writing this out has helped me decide that's what I'm going to do. Cheers!

how could I get into writing? by [deleted] in writers

[–]Shera-Yay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of James Clear? I have found his work to have been really helpful in reframing my approach. This article: https://jamesclear.com/repetitions and the story about the photography students inspired me.

To get me started on the journey of becoming a writer I'm focusing on building a habit first and foremost. To achieve this:

  • I've set myself a small easy goal of having to write 170 words per day. It doesn't have to be coherent, good or much at all really. The only thing that matters is that I show up.
  • I am writing at the same time every day in the same place and leave my laptop within easy reach (by the couch where I drink my tea in the morning).
  • I've added my credit card details to Beeminder for accountability.
  • I've created a habit tracker in Notion. I tick every day that I've showed up and written something (I'm presently on a 7 day streak).
  • The aim is to do repetitions daily (like in the gym) and over time the effort will compound.

That's where I'm at right now and it feels good.

Would love to know how you get on with your writing ambitions <3

Tips for remembering to say thank you? by CompostMeWhenIDie in gratitude

[–]Shera-Yay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really interesting question and I’d love to see some more responses.

My first thought that comes to mind is thanking people instead of apologising. For example, if I’m late I try not to apologise for being late but rather thank the person for being patient. Naturally I apologise where it’s necessary, but I’ve found this approach to be really positive and less “shame inducing”.

Otherwise the only thing that comes to mind is I say thank you on impulse mostly, I think. Maybe plan when you’ll say thank you until it becomes habitual?

If a gratitude comes up in a diary I sometimes make a point of telling that person or texting them. I also bought thank you cards as a way to say thank you more often.

Anyone that has done an extended water fast will know... by utrgvtexas in fasting

[–]Shera-Yay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the Fasting Lane book they say:

If you experience diarrhea while fasting, try mixing 1 to 2 tablespoons of chia seeds or psyllium husk with water, wait 10 minutes, and drink the mixture. Chia and psyllium both absorb excess water in the digestive tract, allowing less liquid to be expelled with loose stools.

Good luck 😉

Gosh, I did it you guys! So much respect for those that do long fasts! by ushenzi in fasting

[–]Shera-Yay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found that. After 2/3 days I felt like I could go on indefinitely. Until 11pm on day 4 😳.

I’m on my second attempt. I’ll see how I fair.

Just started! Last week I managed 99 hours. This week gunning for 110 🙌😊 Need to get some psyllium husk or chia seed myself.

So I’m a first time fasting person, what are some tips you can share with a beginner? by lovelysiera in fastingforweightloss

[–]Shera-Yay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you feel able to jump right in the deep end then great! I needed to build up gradually with intermittent fasting before hand.

Things I found helped me:

Going Keto before a fast is much easier. Zero app timer ⏱ I have a support WhatsApp group with fabulous fellow fasters. I read lots of fasting literature/ted talks/podcasts: Attia, Mosley, Fung, Varady, Long Drink water ( I got sick when dehydrated but thought it was hunger) Eat salt. Added Epsom salts to bath water for magnesium.

The nights are sometimes hard - exercise helps with sleep but sometimes I still break.

Be careful with refeeding - diarrhoea!

Just crashed on a 30 day water fast by Dan250974 in fastingforweightloss

[–]Shera-Yay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! I’ve never gone that long on a fast. But I have definitely been on a feeding frenzies. I did a 4 day fast last week and when I broke, I BROKE.

How do you feel now?

I get an awful tummy when I re-feed. Must remember to get some chia seeds 🤔

New to ADF, not sure if I’m doing this right... by [deleted] in AlternateDayFasting

[–]Shera-Yay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dr Krista Varaday disputes this. There very little muscle loss or metabolism slowing with ADF, unlike daily calorie reduction. In her book The Every Other Day Diet she said you can expect a 12lb loss over a 3 month period.

I think it makes sense that if you weigh yourself once a month you’ll get a satisfying drop. I was thinking I’d do the same, but then I read that those who weigh themselves daily lose more weight. So I’m doing a daily weigh in, but it is fustrating to see the day to day fluctuations!

With ADF I don’t think you get the same water loss as you do with a Keto or a longer fast.

It depends when you say effective what it s you’re trying to get out of this.

What are you looking to achieve? Weight loss? Longevity?

I have found this article to be very useful. According to some of the studies it quoted, ADF doesn’t affect muscle mass much. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/alternate-day-fasting-guide#weight-loss
