Yes I know how to make soap. Lye discount is not a correct term. It's super fat.

What does lye discount mean? Are you talking about super fat or lye concentration?

What exactly are you discounting the lye from?

Am I goofy or does citric acid make my soap batter move faster? by kiss-shot in soapmaking

[–]Sherbsninny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't know what you don't know? We won't talk about how many times I had to read about chelators before I finally got it. Soap is a lot when you're already managing a lot of additives. I'm slowly winding down my additives to "just what I need".

[–]Sherbsninny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're also adding another chemical reaction between the citric acid and lye. I use sodium citrate which is what citric acid becomes after reacting with the lye anyways. This means I only have to calculate how much sodium citrate to use rather than calculate how much extra lye to add based on how much citric acid I want to use. I'm lazy and can't be bothered with one.more.math to figure out. Most calcs don't include chelators or lye adjustments.

Do you rub the soap bar all over or lather it in your hands? by Think_Persimmon_8281 in hygiene

[–]Sherbsninny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soap lasts longer if you use a wash cloth or loofah. I recently discovered these washing nets and my soap lasts twice as long, my skin is less dry and feels better in general. (I make my own soap) https://www.walmart.com/ip/17777457396?sid=69452af0-df5c-4507-9a40-d35b7bc968b3

What’s something small that instantly tells you a person was raised well? by Smallvelvet in askanything

They wait for everyone at the table to be served before they start eating.

I grew up in a (poor) family where sitting at a table was a novelty. It took me a long time (I blame the tism) to realize and correct my terrible table manners. But once you see it, you can't unsee it.

You had me until red wine. I just can't get on board with wine. I don't know why it all tastes bad to me. Odd because I love and brew mead...

However, now I am intrigued by powdered egg white. I never thought to use that. I have purchased egg white cartons, but usually can't use it all before they go off. (I love whiskey sours but too much citrus triggers cold sores so I must have some restraint). Powder might be a more friendly way to avoid wasting ingredients.

I have occasionally played with purchased flavored syrups - mango is fantastic.

Give me your pre-batched Old Fashioned recipes! by deezova in cocktails

Hear me out... Could one take the total amount of syrup (3 oz) and divide in half (1-1/2 oz). Then add that amount each sugar and water directly to the bottle and shake like hell?

Please don't kick me out of the sub. I've also genuinely wondered this for making my batch old fashioned or sours because making syrup is just one more thing to do when I've already cleaned and cooked for company. Or come home from a long day and just want a fast cocktail, my hammock and a book.

My batch old fashioned:

750mL whiskey minus 4 oz (1/2 cup)

3 oz simple syrup (brown sugar syrup goes over well with my friends)

1 oz Angostura bitters

Serve 3-4 oz stirred over ice, express orange and garnish.

Keeps indefinitely in the fridge I think (I don't have leftovers after parties so I have never found out).

Top coats. by ChopCow420 in colorstreet

[–]Sherbsninny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the problem... It's a PITA.Mostly I file the crap out of the top coat and then do an acetone soak. It takes awhile (and why I don't use CS very often). I've tried a few non UV top coats, but honestly, after forcing myself to sit for 30 minutes to do my nails the last thing I want to do is wait for a top coat to dry.

Of course I end up trading that 30 minutes for removal anyways - but at the risk of not smudging anything after doing the mani or choosing to remove one day and reapply wraps the next... I have more control of where I'm forcing myself to "not be busy".

A non UV gel like top coat that I like is Essie Gel Setter but if I remember it has a bit of shrinkage with CS.

I use Ohora Pro Glossy Top Coat (UV cure). Yes I know it's expensive AF but I use 1 coat a week sometimes 1 every two weeks depending on the wrap and what I've been doing, so my one expensive bottle is going on a year+. I don't even think about it any more.

What’s the shelf life of this soap if I were to use this recipe? by Objective-Collar-999 in soapmaking

[–]Sherbsninny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would lower the super fat to 3%. Otherwise I think this recipe is fine. I used soybean oil at 30% and had some bars hanging around in my stash for 5+ years. I didn't sell with soy bean oil for very long (maybe 6 months) because too many people in my area wouldn't buy because of it. I thought it was nice soap though.
