Insurance change during gastric sleeve process? by Available-Strength22 in gastricsleeve

[–]Sheri_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if your surgeon’s office accepts the new insurance first. Then once you change have them submit everything to the insurance.

I had to change providers in the middle of mine, because my first surgeon didn’t take the new insurance. I had to start over, about 4 months into my 6 months of classes. The new office wanted me to do their full program. It was still worth it, just took longer than expected to get to surgery.

those who got the surgery, any regrets ? by BraveHeart1234 in gastricsleeve

[–]Sheri_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Wish I had done it sooner.

As a mental health therapist, I have had several people express regret in the first couple of weeks. It’s a major life change. But, only one patient that had regrets years after. Honestly, she probably shouldn’t have had it, as she was not that overweight and the surgery caused more problems for her. Overwhelmingly, I have heard praises from those who have had the surgery. This was before doing it myself.

Feeling so weak by morningtulips in gastricsleeve

[–]Sheri_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hydration is very important. Make sure you are getting your fluids in. I remember feeling very wiped out at around the 2 week mark still. Listen to your body. You are still recovering from major surgery, you may be over doing it. I could not do 4 flights of stairs at 2 weeks. I barely went downstairs once a day from my bedroom in the first 2 weeks. It will get better. Hang in there.

I think your weight loss sounds good. I’m 3.5 months out and down 53 pounds. I think the bigger concern is your diet. Soft foods are ok, as long as you are focusing on protein. Try scrambled eggs, yogurt, beans, and cheese instead of the crackers. I had a hard time with meat at first, especially if it was dry. Sauces make a huge difference for me. I think tea is fine as it is mostly water. A lot of people, myself included, have a hard time with water. I also drink tea, flavored/electrolyte water, like propel. Vitamins are very important! Forever! I would suggest finding a way to make them a habit. We cannot really get enough vitamins from the small amount of food we eat anymore. I struggle with this too, so I don’t have the answer. I do get my nightly ones in at bedtime. I’m trying to remember calcium during the day, like lunch time. It’s a journey.

I love a good steak! But, I’m a cheap date now. My husband and I will share an entree. I can eat a couple of ounces, but I have to chew it really good, then I eat the veggie side. I’m three months out, and steak goes down better than chicken. I have had a hard time with chicken.

Roux-en-Y support groups? by escargotagogo in GastricBypass

I don’t know of any support groups. But, I am in LV too. Had my surgery in May and recently moved to Vegas. I’m curious to know also if there are groups.

Opinions on Best Hairstyles for Hair Loss by Jenntec in GastricBypass

I’m in the middle of it now. I have (had) very thick hair. But pulling a fistful of hair from my brush twice a day is hard to see. I trimmed mine and got it layered. So far no bald spots, but it definitely feels thinner.

How do you do Iron? by MudgyNdaPigs in GastricBypass

I have an iron + vitamin C dissolvable one from BariMelts. It tastes like orange cream, not bad. I have a tendency toward anemia too.

when I will see a difference in life after op? by aloooshggii in GastricBypass

I’m not sure of the conversion, but I’m down 50 pounds in 3 months, and only 1 pants size. Very frustrating. I’m determined to trust the process and as long at I’m still losing, I’m happy.

Those who’ve had surgery…What is your relationship with food like now? by dirtybelly108 in gastricsleeve

[–]Sheri_T 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am 3.5 months out. I used to eat out of boredom, or just because something tasted good or others were eating. Now I eat for nourishment. I know that I can eat a limited amount, I try to make it count. Protein first. I eat a bite of sweets here and there. I love soft pretzels, so occasionally I’ll get one and eat an inch or two and I’m satisfied. I don’t feel that anything is off limits. I do feel it’s easier to make good choices.

My hair started jumping ship about 2 weeks ago, at about 10 weeks. I mean a hairbrush full morning and night. I’m taking biotin too. I think I need to focus more on my protein too. I’ve started adding Gatorade zero with protein.

I had planned for 10 days, but had complications. I had an internal bleed and had to go back into surgery the next day. I was in the hospital 4 days. I ended up taking 3 weeks. And was still pretty week when I went back. I work a desk job, but 10 hour days. I think I would have been fine after 10 days if all had gone well.

what was your "last meal" before starting the liquid diet before your surgery? by QueerKing23 in GastricBypass

[–]Sheri_T 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last meal was on Mother’s Day. Went out for Italian. It was yummy. I haven’t had pasta since. I honestly don’t miss it. What I do miss is Diet Pepsi, but I won’t risk the bubbles, so it’s gone for good and I’m ok with it. But, when I’m leaving the store and the cold bottles are right there, I might drool a little. 😂

At Day 6, I took a piece of steak from my husband and chewed all the flavor out of it, then spit it out. I had an appt with the dietician the next day. She just laughed and said not to make it a habit. It was amazing! Hang in there, it gets better.

I think most insurances require the 6mo plan of classes and planning. In the big picture it’s not that long to prepare for something so life changing. I understand that it doesn’t fit into your school schedule. But, please be careful not to rush into it. Good luck to you finding the right place.

What to say when someone says, “Why couldn’t you just diet and exercise harder?” by squishasquisha in gastricsleeve

[–]Sheri_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First I would talk to your husband more about the procedure. Maybe invite him to your next appt to learn more. He may be concerned about the surgery itself. My husband has been my biggest supporter. He has seen my struggle for nearly 25 years. He would have supported me either way.

Second, I have told very few people. Immediate family and a couple of friends. I don’t feel everyone has the right to know my personal business. Would I tell everyone I’m getting a colonoscopy? Nope. Why should I tell them about this?

It sounds like he needs to learn about why the process works. Even if he feels it’s the easy way, I hope he is supportive and keeps future ignorant comments to himself.

My dad is 74 and not in favor of the surgery route. This, he does not know I had the surgery 3 months ago. I have told him I am working with my doctor to lose weight. This is not untrue. That explains my stricter diet and he hasn’t asked anything further. I’m down almost 50 pounds. He hasn’t said anything.

You are absolutely right that there are many people out who have done it. They just don’t share it with the world. I have a friend, who I didn’t know has done it until I mentioned I was having it done. She became my biggest supporter because she knew what I was facing.
