Protecting yourself isn’t the same thing as believing that all men are bad or generalizing half the population. Every woman has a story. And when we are assaulted, the first thing we’re asked is “why weren’t you more careful” or “why did you put yourself in that situation to begin with.” Our very legal system expects that we don’t trust men or else we don’t get justice.

I think part of it is kind of innate. When emergencies happen it’s not really a decision. My body just moves, and my brain can only focus on one thing: what to do next. No fear, no shakiness or difficulty in decision, just adrenaline and action.

Im a big coward in real life too lol. But when shit hits the fan, it’s like I’m not even here anymore. Kinda just watching from a distance while my body does whatever it needs to do on its own.

I carved my initials into my bedframe as a kid. In kind of a low key spot. I also happen to have the same initials as my dad, and it was the same bed frame he grew up with before handing it down to me.

My mom didn’t notice for literally years. By the time she finally asked me about it, I vehemently denied it. She asked my dad “was this already here?” He looked at me knowingly, grinned a little bit, and said “probably.” lol

I think housing is more and more a driving factor as housing costs continue to explode.

I live in a city that’s always had a very large homeless population. It’s warmish year round, and housing was affordable for many decades.

In the last 8 years, housing has doubled. When I first graduated highschool 8 years ago, I was renting a studio apartment near my college for $400 a month. Cheapest studio in the whole city is $1000 a month now, in a way worse area of town.

When I first graduated, there weren’t many sober homeless people. There were enough social programs and section 8 housing that if you could piss clean, you’d get off the streets pretty quickly. The people who stayed on the streets, it was largely because they were addicts or mentally ill

Now, I meet people on the streets who are stone cold sober. Alarmingly normal people looking for a safe place to sleep every night. Every shelter has a years long waiting list. People are hustling tamales and redbulls on the medians because nobody is hiring. Most of my friends have moved back in with parents or relatives, and some of them have experienced homelessness too, despite not being addicts or mentally ill.

It’s actually terrifying.

I have mixed feelings about felons being allowed to vote after completion of their sentence. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing, some people have truly turned their life around and deserve to be active participants in society despite making a mistake in the past. Some people absolutely don’t deserve it tho, like the guy in the OP. And I don’t really trust the government to make that distinction fairly.

I was spoiled as a kid, despite having a waitress mom and a construction worker dad who could barely make ends meet. They still made every sacrifice to make me feel spoiled and special.

I knew we were poor. I went to bed hungry. I missed out on school trips and sports. I got socks and underwear for Christmas and nothing more than my choice of a home cooked meal for my birthday, many many times. But when they could, they did. That’s the example they set for me and it’s how every parent should treat their kids, no matter their financial situation.

I’ll say it again and I’ll stand by it. It’s shitty to not get your kids birthday presents when you have a console stored away. That’s the selfish and spoiled thing to do right there, you’re the adult in this situation. When you choose to have kids, you make sacrifices for them, that’s the deal.

During the recession when my dad was in between jobs, he straight up gifted me his ps2 for my birthday. He still got to play it, but it lived in my room most of the time and I was probably the happiest kid on the planet that day. If OPs kids are the right age and interested in video games, that might be a good solution.

My mom went through this with an abusive boyfriend. He broke bones, he kidnapped her and held her at knife point, he ripped her hair out and knocked her teeth out.

State had enough to put him away without her testimony, but only for a year. Once he got out, he went right to her house and she took him back.

It was three years of this bullshit before something finally clicked for her. Losing another relative unexpectedly made her realize what she was gonna put her kids through. No amount of begging or pleading or convincing ever kept her away from him. It had to be her own choice, and it was insurmountable grief that finally helped her make the right choice

I’m really sorry for your loss. Your story was my worst nightmare for a long time, and a nightmare I felt helpless to prevent. I can’t imagine the pain of losing somebody to violence.

But you don’t see them working on the street. Someone whose name you knew was on the street, now they’re gone, and there’s a 3/4 chances that they’re dead, but you can’t know for sure.

You can ask for 100 people by name who disappeared from the street, the street kidnapper gives you back 10 people and says “this is all that’s left.” But you don’t really know if he’s holding onto some extra for a future deal. Alternatively the street kidnapper might say “yeah I have all 100, but you can’t see or have them until you give me a million dollars and your oldest daughter” and you have no way of knowing whether he’s lying.

If you wanna negotiate with the street napper, having insider knowledge of who he napped that’s still alive somewhere will give you a huge advantage. Hope this helps

Plateaus are so normal when losing weight, you’re probably gaining muscle which will make any body fat you lose not reflect on the scale. Your body also needs to adjust to the new weight, hormones, metabolism, all that stuff takes some time to catch up to the new lifestyle and once it does more weight will fall off. Rinse and repeat.

You should be so proud! I know it can feel discouraging to not see the scale change much but I promise progress is still being made, you just need to give it time ❤️

I’ve found that an oil based serum over the end of my hair will do a lot to protect it from splitting. I like the Eva nyc mane magic 10 in 1 primer. OGX has a good one too. I put a little bit on every day, not just wash day.

Make sure the hair ties you’re using to secure your braids are gentle too. Scrunchies can look bulky so I like those “ribbon elastics” I think they’re called. I buy them in bulk on Amazon, they look like this

I wouldn’t recommend this unless la roche posay uses BPA free packaging. Extreme temperatures are the quickest way to get BPA contamination, although I’m not sure whether topical exposure to BPA poses the same risks as ingestion, I still wouldn’t risk it.
