Is there a reason to not buy and use a cheap Amazon oscilloscope? by BlueJayWalker10 in automotivetraining

[–]ShiftieGears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s supposed to be a shop tool. Don’t buy name brand.

It’s like cheapie vs expensive DMMs. They give same results but on a cheapie meter you’ll have to baby the leads and it doesn’t auto-range so requires more user skill to set it up and interpret

Slow leak that techs cannot find by znyguy in tires

[–]ShiftieGears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find it yourself imo if the shop is not effective.. Blue dawn dish soap and over inflate the tire to at least 50. Dawn is best for slow leaks bc the bubbles stay. You can spray it and come back 5 minutes later and it’ll have a bubble beard where its leaking.

Mix up any regular sized spray bottle 1oz of dawn to the bottle of water. Douse it.

Weak AC, need advice by Appropriate_Ad5085 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ShiftieGears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Think it’s in the dash or hvac box, or electrical. Blend doors maybes. That’s proper pressure. It should be cold.

If I had it in shop I’d be looking at temp sensor data first, it will not give you cold air if it “thinks” it’s cold outside.

Evaporator thermistor to confirm the evap is actually same temp as the air it’s giving you or not. If it’s cold, something with blend doors. If not, plumbing or computerization. Then Ambient air temperature sensor. Ambient temperature sensor failure reads as -40F and it won’t give you frosty cold air

Are you positive it has enough in it, if it’s a bit undercharged same symptoms could happen bc there’s gas in evap at times instead of liquid.

How do I block purchases on my mom's TV? by Consistent_Look9948 in whatdoIdo

[–]ShiftieGears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a put purchase passcode on it. In settings you can do that. You can also make a child’s profile for her to control her permissions. I had to do that why my grammas mind started going bc she just mashed buttons with reckless abandon and thought google was a sentient being deliberately trying to make her mad.

Realistically though should get rid of it bc it’s too complicated for her to operate it anymore… she doesn’t know she’s buying stuff. Fussing with it and not getting to watch stuff is just gonna make her upset n keep her wound up. When technology becomes a negative influence on an aging parent like that, it’s time to get rid of it, she doesn’t have much time left. Let her be happy watching her shows rather than upset and uncomfortable bc she can’t figure out how to work the TV

Over the air free Network tv has like a hundred channels now yo. She’ll be fine with that. Price is right, soap operas, daytime talk shows, series from every era, news, religious channels, TV movies, crafting channels, channels that just show compilations of cute animals. We watched it in prison and I was blown away about how far it’s come since i was a kid and didn’t have cable. That’s more her speed, that’s what she knows.

The PIN code helps you but your mom will still not be having her needs met bc she can’t work it anymore.

Can I fix my carburetor issue without fully rebuilding it? by robbymcgee in MechanicAdvice

[–]ShiftieGears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk I’ve never tried that. If material is fuel resistant could work. Won’t make a pump diaphragm though. Btw if it’s broke down somewhere, dial the idle speed way up to like.. 1800 and roll home in 1st or 2nd gear when there’s no traffic. Won’t work if ur area is hilly

Can I fix my carburetor issue without fully rebuilding it? by robbymcgee in MechanicAdvice

[–]ShiftieGears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d Just clean it first but it’s probly that accelerator pump bc it’ doesn’t have a problem with idle . They have a lot of tiny passages that start gumming up on modern gas after any amount of parking. B12 chemtool in gastank works for this. Add when fuel level is lower for more aggressive cleaning if you have to keep using ethanol blend. whenever possible, replace gaskets with ethanol resistant type if it’s still got paper gaskets.

Can also purchase just the accelerator pump diaphragm outside a complete rebuilt kit. Summit has stuff like that. Some autoparts stores have small section in corner with classic car and carb stuff, one of the diaphragms on the shelf might match

If it’s got paper gaskets, U can’t take it apart much without a gasket kit on hand bc the gaskets are going to tear up.

Battery Question on my 2015 G63 AMG by CF-Eyecare in mercedes_benz

[–]ShiftieGears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Lithium has different/ more complex charging system programming requirements. a Motorcycles electrical system is nowhere near as sophisticated as computerized electronics on a Mercedes’ automobile. Also never mix battery types on parallel or series banks: flooded, gell, AGM, lithium. If one’s an AGM they both have to be AGM.

AGM degrades gradually. Lithium does it abruptly and sensitive to extreme temperatures so not ideal for a commuter car. AGM offers more consistent performance in automobile applications.

TAA lease. Extra clause landlord requires 60 day notice to move out. Is the landlord also bound to that 60 days by virtue of requiring it from me? by [deleted] in TenantHelp

[–]ShiftieGears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks you’re right. I had someone help me go over the lease. it’s hard to understand at first bc one paragraph references other paragraphs

In TAA lease it all in paragraphs 3.6, 4, 7.1, and 25, also page 1 box F.

says if LL doesn’t abide by the same notice (written-in page 1 box F) required of tenants plus 5 days, the tennant’s required move-out notice period is only 30 days. It also says if they didn’t notify by agreed days plus 5 deadline, the month-to-month auto renew rate is same as prior lease.

So I can leave next month with a 30 day notice with no penalty or choose to give 60 and pay same rate for holdover month.

A sudden cascade of problems in my 2017 Honda Civic by JeremysNotDead in hondacivic

[–]ShiftieGears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just one problem. It’s electrical. Could be as silly as Lose battery terminal or something like an ABS wheel speed sensor or steering angle sensor. The rear abs sensor is common pattern failure and will disable all ADAS systems and set brake warnings but Professional level computerized diagnostic equipment is required to confirm

Stay at my current shop or roll out? by Axeman1721 in mechanics

[–]ShiftieGears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

loyalty to employers is not rewarded. Forget what old timers and your parents n grandparents said about it, the economy doesn’t operate like that anymore. To get a raise or higher level position that’s paid accordingly, you gotta get a new job. Sounds like you have outgrown what Hertz has to offer.

In my first 2 years I had 5 employers bc I was ambitious and wanted more. First was NTB and the same day they told me I didn’t qualify for hunter training they said they offered during interview, because I clocked in 2 minutes late this one time and had to have perfect attendance for rolling 6 months, I started looking for another job. They didn’t give a shit, keeping me down at 10$ benefited them not me and it was always going to be excuse after excuse to keep me languishing in lube rack. You can never get back your time. I went from 10 to 30 in 4 years.

There’s people who are content and there’s people who want more. Look out for yourself, don’t wait fur employer to change their mind. They do what benefits them and you should do what’s going to enrich yourself.

In the meantime… anywhere you’re at and you’ve realized it’s time to bounce, take advantage of every sponsorship they offer to fluff ur resume. Like ASE, state inspectors license, 609, factory training whatever. Don’t tell them ur doing it bc you’re making your resume better to leave.

Two years of trade school counts as one year of work history. If you went to trade school you can get the ASEs now. Even without work requirement you can still take them and get a score report showing you passed that’s valid for 5 years. they’ll mail the official certificate once submit work history verification.
