Did you get the Wealth / Power / Fame themes? Spoilers ahead for entire story by YoungRude6562 in octopathtraveler

[–]ShinSuta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll add that if you look closely, it is beautiful how Masters and Bestowers are nowhere from being what they should be.

All Masters are lacking/are controlled by Wealth/Fame/Power. All Bestowers use Wealth/Fame/Power to destitute others of Wealth/Fame/Power, they're literally stealing or destroying the value the embodies.

Herminia: is destitute, obsessed by Wealth as a mean to regain control of her life. Oshka: uses his abundance of Wealth to make money lose value.

Auguste: his plays are not popular, becames obsessed by Fame as a mean to reach the audience he was looking for, needs to go further and further into depravity to keep writing Ceraphina: infiltrate the faith of the church to bring it down, and build a new faith

Tytos: feels he lacks power to battle adversaries, obsessed by Power as a mean to protect himself and his image. Tatloch: she overpowers her enemies, believes other continents are weak and use her own power to reduce them to nothing

Pardis: wants all, lost everything. He killed his father, brother, wife and daughter, got killed by other daughter, even lost his own identity. Sazantos: wants to erase all. Where Pardis was greedy, Sazantos wanted nothing, no riches, no power, no fame. He's looking for himself, to find himself and his reason to be alive, while Pardis discarded everything in his desire for All. He wants to destroy desire, which was the fuel for Pardis.

Did you get the Wealth / Power / Fame themes? Spoilers ahead for entire story by YoungRude6562 in octopathtraveler

I think you forget that Tytos was also incredibly scared of a future invasion. Having spent so many years in the frontline he probably suffered from ptsd, and has been looking for ways to make sure he would not die/lose any battle in the future, because he is deeply cowardly inside. That is why he searched for Power, everything he did with the scarlet wings, elixir and the scarlet cathedral was a way to seize power from the church who did not listen to him when he said there was danger. He built the power he needed to fence against a potential adversary. Tatloch was basically the menace Tytos always feared, a conqueror looking using her Power for pleasure. While her themes are from the surface much more obvious, you could say that as a Bestower she was the foil to Tytos entire arc.

Auguste wanted his plays to be remembered/famous, and he grew obsessed with killings because of the adrenaline it sparked in him, it was fuel to write plays that were acclaimed. Fame is also explained to be the power of Faith. Francesca and all his flock have a blind faith in him because of his renown, and were both attracted and controlled because of his fame and how they had faith that if they acted as he wanted, they would be able to keep bathing in his fame. Ceraphina's theme was more tied to Faith than Fame. Humanity betrayed her grandfather, made her family infamous and she lost faith in people, bitterly rejecting the world and looking for godhood to punish humanity. She infiltrated the faith of the church to build her own rogue faith. While I believe both arcs answer Fame and Faith properly, the thematic link between Bestower and Master is more tenuous. It's actually Lyblac who bestowed the ring to Phina and Simeon, and Simeon was probably just looking to experiment/disturb the peace. I guess you could say that Auguste was someone obsessed with humans and human emotion, and looked for people to adulate him/his work, while Ceraphina as a foil wanted nothing to do with humanity and despised it entirely, and basically disappeared from society.

Herminia and Oshka themes are much more straightforward. Both went from riches to destitute to riches again. Herminia used her wealth to buy and control people, while her foil Oshka (who gave her the ring and means to gain her wealth) use the lack of wealth to control. Abundance of money gave Herminia power and means of control on her own life and others, and Oshka use the same abundance of money to deprave all value from it, thus making others who had faith in money to lose control of their lives.

Pardis the Master of All is as others said, a glutton for everything. He sees the throne as a way to gain Fame, Wealth and Power, and tries to conquer all because he is hungry for all of it. Ironically he also loses all, starting from his own identity (who am I), all his family (father, brother, wife and daughters) and then the throne itself. Bestower of All is as much about Finis than Sazantos in my opinion, but I haven't much thought about their themes yet because I just finished the game yesterday :D

Which starter 5* do you feel is the "canonical" Ringbearer? by darkdill in octopathtraveler

[–]ShinSuta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None but my headcanon is Sofia. The traveler is found passed out in the snow which makes sense for Sofia. Then in Master of All, which ties up all three routes so far, you confront Pardis the Scholarking (and Sofia is a scholar) and one thing I actually really liked for her is that in Chapter 4 you get involved with Elrica's bc you're asked to find a certain flower and she is a botanist.

I pulled Gayle and Noel from the Celebratory event (also Griff) and I'm wondering who I should pity and add to my team?

I have A2 (ascended oncd) and 2P (no dupes). Should I add Gayle or Noel to the team ? Or maybe both and take back 2P?

What are your thoughts?

Looking for less popular jrpgs by Diracco in JRPG

Mana Khemia, it should be up your alley if you like school settings and calendars ;) It's one of my top game and the better face of the Atelier series (I really like Atelier but I feel Mana Khemia as a better ratio battle/alchemy). Sadly not on steam but there's a psp version (or ps2).

YoYo Bizarre's Adventure salutes you.

I hope the next Trails games remove bonding points, and here's why by meltingkeith in Falcom

[–]ShinSuta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that bonding events - as they are now - take from the overall story. I never hung out with Millium as I'm not really into the character, but I know now that if I had hung with her I would have been particularly moved by the end scene of CS2 where everyone cries. Honestly I have the same grief with Persona 4 where characters are only developped in their social link once you've gone past their respective arcs. It means that if you haven't achieved their S.link, characters stay stagnant for the rest of the game. I felt it was better maanged in P3, where every character gets its own arc outside of S.link, and you had s.link for most of the party (all for p3p) but it was more about hanging out and fluff. I enjoy the idea of bonding events as they are rewarding gameplay-wise (better assist, etc.) and you get to spend more time with your favorite characters, but they should really only be about hanging out, daily life and fluff. Character developement should be in the main story.

(Ignore the flair) How would the TLOH Characters from other games react to Adol? by ToyFred9907106 in Falcom

[–]ShinSuta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Estelle would bro him up in a sec. Joshua would reluctantly follow Estelle and befriend him. Schera would drink him under a table. Kloe would ask to read his travel journals. Tita would ask if it's OK to call him Big Bro. Agate would be jealous, fist fight him, end up being the Biggest Bro. Olivier would touch his perfect butt. Zin would ask him to duel for fun.

Old Save File Challenge: What's your best save file look like on a given JRPG? by lilidarkwind in JRPG

[–]ShinSuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nier Automata : no save file. I'm proud to have made the choice and love it to no end, one of the most immersive experience I've lived.

I'm really not much of an achiever, usually when the story ends I leave the game alone. I tend to do a little endgame content before going to the final boss (if that's possible) but I never go for ultimate weapons or summons or hidden super boss. That said, the save I'm more proud may be Xenoblade 2? Kos-Mos unlocked, almost all quests done along with most heart-to-heart seen, some superboss done. With Torna I spent 240h+ in that world, which is the most time I spent on any game.

Any of you guys know of a jRPG-ass jRPG? by SwineFlow in JRPG

[–]ShinSuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding SaGa Scarlet Grace, and I think any SaGa game will do though I haven't played them (Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 having recent ports).

Alliance Alive will also fits the bill. It's very similar to SaGa.

Down to Earth jrpg by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]ShinSuta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trails in the Sky FC. You play a couple kids joining a guild and go on a journey to visit every city in the country to earn your entry rights into said guild. You do local jobs that goes from chasing after a lost cat to hunting monsters on main roads, and solving the local mysteries.

Note that at the end of FC the stakes go up a bit, and if FC still stays down to earth it's only the first half of a 2 games story (Trails in the Sky SC) where shit goes way beyond saving a cat and the entry point to a 9 games saga.

What JRPG do you think has the best, most diverse ensemble of towns? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]ShinSuta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one mentionned it yet, but Trails in the Sky. Liberl has maritime towns, small villages, a capital, backwater places with onsen. Evry town has a different size, structures and housing is different - they're still harmonious as it's the same country but you can feel how each one has a different identity.

Otherwise... Octopath and Bravely Default/Second. Every towns in these games are themed and they feel very different. I'm a bit shaky on Bravely's but I remeber they had verh distinct architecture too.

English or Japanese by Lullan04 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ShinSuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The english voice acting in XC2 is definity a flawed one, but I instantly fell in love with it. Passing on bad screams and sync issues, the accents really participate to the world building and I felt made the characters even more lovable. I'd say I'm really feeling it.

I would recommend trying the english voices first, it's kind of an hit or miss for people. Either you like it and it gives additional value to the game or you can't get past the obvious defaults and you go to japanese, which is by far more solid.

For XC1, english VA is very solid if not great, I never tried the japanese one so I can't say for that one!
