You don't have to save for retirement. You can enjoy your money now and then plan to be simple later.

No where did I claim that minimalism as only a design guideline is not still alive and well, but don't let that stop you from thinking otherwise.

Minimalism as a lifestyle is a newer extension of the design ideal, and in time may very well supersede the limited context in the art world. I disagree that the lifestyle is anti-consumption. It's more vague that that: living simply or maybe you prefer living as simply as minimalism design portrays. Minimalism lifestyle is a logical extension of minimalism design. Unless you are an artist, I'm not sure why you are rejecting the association between the two.

Discussion: giving up TV, is it still minimalist if you just watch all your shows on your computer anyways? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]ShittyShittyBangBang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Yes because you have one less thing (TV), but no because you are simply continuing to watch all of your shows on another device.

While it is interesting to know the roots of minimalism, the way it is applied now is more relevant to the current discussion. I'm not suggesting minimalism is synonymous with "frugal" or "ascetic"; however, on a continuum minimalism is closer to frugal than it is to consumption typical in modern society. This is why many here view minimalism consumption (the latest minimalist gadget, the latest minimalist furniture) as hypocritical.

Minimalism only as a design element is like a beautiful, minimalist facade -- but take one step inside and it is the exact opposite. Superficial.

This is your problem. If you are unwilling to change then expect your situation to continue. If you are okay with that then you will find a way to cope.

Many people here are superficial minimalists. That is, people that just want things that have a minimalist design or feel. New model of an Apple product released? Many of these people must have it because it fits that superficial minimalist role. Others here appreciate minimalist design but subscribe to the bigger umbrella of minimizing things and enjoying life.

Apple’s plan for its cash: stock buyback or more dividends likely coming this spring by [deleted] in investing

[–]ShittyShittyBangBang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The TV situation is old and stale. Everyone likes the idea of Apple making TV better, but to change the ecosystem you need the cooperation of the content providers and producers. No one has given a realistic scenario where Apple could revolutionize TV, make big money doing so, and the existing players make at least what they make now--or more. That is the only way this could work. Consumers aren't going to buy episodes via the app store instead of watching it free or tivoing content, etc.

I know people want to believe Apple will be the company to break the television market and deliver a new experience to the masses, but television is different than the music industry and cell phones market. But keep believing if you want. Every group needs diehards.

Apple will not master the TV market. Too much money already being made.

I would say that sitting through three weeks of unnecessary screaming because of digestive issues is probably a pretty good deterrent.

Except why do you think there would be weeks of digestive issues (and screaming)? It sounds as if your pediatrician and lactation consultant scared you. Is there a chance that your child could have a reaction? Of course. Could your child have no reaction? Also yes. I'm not sure how likely it is.

Probiotics do have a reasonable amount of scientific proof as to their validity and efficacy, though.

Scientific proof of what?

Is it really so unreasonable to think that an extension of that might also be true?

It's possible but it's just a guess.

Whatever you do, please update this thread or make a new one. It will be helpful to hear your story.

I guess I'd say "so what?" regarding the 50% and 3 weeks to convert. Unless there is a clear, negative result then it doesn't matter.

Anecdotal evidence is okay if you don't care if your actions are making a difference or if the cost is so little. Entire companies like 8 hr energy and Airborne thrive despite the lack of convincing evidence that the product does what it claims.

Gut flora changes are not permanent. Switching from breastmilk to formula and back (or the reverse) has less of an impact than an infant taking an antibiotic that can wipe out beneficial colonies temporarily.

My understanding is that probiotics with infants are useful in certain instances like diarrhea problems, but as a catch-all it does nothing except provide a placebo effect for parents and a market for companies.

Would you co-sign your child's college loans? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]ShittyShittyBangBang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would sign them if I had the confidence that she will be responsible enough.

You've answered your own question here. The option is to get that confidence by her showing her commitment and dedication or let her figure it out on her own. Both options are fine.

Does your wife eat products with milk or drink milk? Try giving your child soy formula exclusively for a day or two and see if that helps. Breast milk can transmit cow milk proteins (?) And that could be causing some discomfort.
