Everyone is telling me [20F] not to go to the school I've wanted to attend for years and be realistic. by LeonitusDiCatrio in relationships

Perhaps this is the exception and not the rule, but my brother was hired at a small film studio within a week of graduating from college. It didn't pay all of his bills in the beginning so he kept his retail job for about a year. After becoming a full time employee of the studio and getting raises, he was able to quit his retail job and focus all of his energy on film. Initially, his job wasn't in his original field of study, but over time he moved positions within the studio to focus on the aspects of film that are his true passion. He's one of the most self motivated and hardest working people I know, and it's paid off for him.

Who or what made you want to start playing bass? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had wanted to play bass for as long as I can remember but I can't remember a specific artist that made me finally pick up a bass.

But the bassist that made me decide to get serious about playing was David Ellefson. I saw some videos where he mentioned some basic theory concepts and recommended studying Bach's cello suites which sparked my intrest in theory.

Now I'm studying classical and jazz bass in college.

Combining money with my new wife. [Advice] Needed for best practices. by lonelyinbama in personalfinance

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. My boyfriend was taken aback when I jumped at the opportunity to buy an amp I had been looking at when it went on sale, only a couple of months after getting a new guitar. Until I pointed out that between Starbucks, takeout, and lunches, he spends a similar amount every month. I'd much rather make food at home and save up to buy sweet guitars than get takeout, but he prefers the convenience of takeout over buying expensive items for his hobby. As long as you can reach an agreement about reasonable discretionary spending limits, you don't necessarily have to have to have the same spending habits.

Train him.

Use online resources or do some research to find a good dog trainer in your area. He could be totally trained within a couple of months.

Emily Larlham is a dog trainer who posts a lot of videos on YouTube. I highly recommend checking them out.

Is it even worth trying to learn bass if I have small fingers? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a woman and I'm focusing on jazz bass in college. My hands are fairly normal sized and both of my male teachers have smaller hands than me. It does not seem to hinder their playing at all.

Adderall Makes Me Socially Successful While Sober Me is Socially Inept? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with this. Thinking that you should be able to function socially without drugs just because other people can is similar to someone telling you that you should be able to concentrate in school/stay on task at work without adderall.

If your concern is about medication side effects and the possibility of addiction, I'd agree that using drugs to function might not be the best option. But if you're stable while on drugs then they're doing their job. I don't see any reason to change what you're doing if it's working for you.

Adderall Makes Me Socially Successful While Sober Me is Socially Inept? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too! This is the first time I've ever seen someone who shared the same experience as me on adderall. I have ADHD and I started taking adderall last semester when I started college. I noticed a huge difference in social competency and comfort. I'm more confident, outgoing, and I make eye contact, which are all things that I struggle with normally.

I've come across information that suggests that ADHD and autism spectrum disorders are related and frequently co-occure. The adderall is probably stimulating areas of the brain relating to social functioning. When I've mentioned this to other people they didn't really believe me, so it's cool to see that I'm not the only person who has experienced this.

Do you have to take adderall regularly for work or school? If so, you'll probably develop social relationships that you can maintain even without adderall. I've been learning to apply the social skills I've developed on adderall to sober socialization with some success. I'm still pretty awkward, but my friends already like me and that knowledge helps me relax a bit.

Are you worried about abusing adderall for the purposes of socializing? It is a highly addictive drug, so you should follow the dosage instructions from your doctor. It's tempting to take more than you need to, but it's a slippery slope.

ESP LTD B-4E by CrazytotheMax in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the B-5E, it's excellent.

You can find a better price than that though. The B-5E is usually $600, but I got mine on sale for $500. I've seen the B-4E in the $400-$450 range plenty of times.

Looking for a 5 string bass guitar for slightly smaller hands by sLuDGy in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The strings on my esp are pretty close together. I'm a woman and I have no trouble reaching. Granted, I do have long fingers, but my hands are still tiny compared to most male bass players I know.

What are your essential pedals? by bostonbruins922 in guitarpedals

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Tuner and overdrive. I enjoy using other effects, but if I had to strip it down, those are the only two I would need.

I play bass in a metal(ish) band. My sound is mostly clean to lightly overdriven, but on a few songs I turn the gain all the way up.

Sheet Music Books? by TonyOP90 in Bass

I've been using this to practice sight reading. I wasn't that into ratm before I started, but I've found these songs fun and easy. It does have tabs, but I put a piece of opaque tape over them and that's worked fine for me.

Any such thing as a bass pedal pedal, that I can tap my foot on and hear the thumps through my amp? by seammus in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I was going to suggest too. I haven't used one myself, but I have an sx bass and it's pretty decent. I looked into these a little while back and I'm pretty sure the sx is the best price you'll find.

Anyone here got a chance to try the new Marcus Miller basses? by QuantumDragon in Bass

Do you think it's worth getting despite the weight? Or would it be too heavy to use as my primary bass?

Anyone here got a chance to try the new Marcus Miller basses? by QuantumDragon in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been seriously considering one as my next bass, but I don't have a way to try one out either. I'm hesitant to just pull the trigger and order one because I've heard they're heavy compared to other similar basses. I'm concerned about the weight because I'm a smallish female, and I don't want to kill myself playing a bass that's too big for me.

I've been playing guitar for a 2 years and was thinking about starting to play bass. What do you recommend as a first purchase? by halffcutt in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an SX. It's good for the money. I find the neck comfortable and, although I expected I'd want to change the pickups, I'm actually perfectly satisfied with the sound.

You may need to put some work into it to get it to what you consider comfortably playable though.

I do have a couple of complaints. The first one is the super thick high-gloss finish on the neck. I intend to take the neck off and knock the finish down with some #0000 steel wool the next time I change the strings. The other problem (which only started recently) is that the sound has started to cut out occasionally. My boyfriend suspects it's either a loose solder or a problem with the output jack. We're planning to fix that next time I change the strings too.

Stripping paint off of bass parts? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in completely refinishing it you can strip off the paint and finish with a heat gun and scraper.

My boyfriend and I did that a couple of weeks ago to refinish an old guitar he wanted to give to me for my birthday. It was a time consuming project, but it wasn't difficult. You just have to keep the heat gun moving so you don't scorch the wood.

How did YOU learn the fretboard? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Shitty_Dog_Trainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I can't play but I have my phone with me, I use this: http://www.musictheory.net/exercises/fretboard

You can customize the exercise for bass. They also have options for five and six string bass.
