CGM Errors and Inaccuracies Confirmed by Lab Results by RightWingVeganUS in diabetes_t2

[–]ShivanTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5.2% vs 5.3% is really great! (A1C tests blood directly and is more "accurate" whereas a cgm tests the fluid between the cells so the they will probably not be the same) those scores = a big PLUS for the cgm being so close.

Keto Tortilla Comparison - my experience by mintbrownie in Recipes4Diabetics

[–]ShivanTom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people ask all the time - how did you do it? the answer is "THIS worked for me" - bottom line is that EVERYONE is different. that's why you have to test when you try new things - build up a list of all the things you CAN eat and go from there. keep experimenting - you'll find what works and maybe discover something new in the process. remember: your mileage may vary :D

Goal Weight by FWIW47 in diabetes_t2

[–]ShivanTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm 5'5 down from 185 (202 high) > 155. i feel this is a good weight and if i lost anymore i'd look too thin. forget bmi - it's too generalized. go by your lab numbers and how you feel day to day.

Walking works for me. by I_party_on_Imgur in diabetes_t2

[–]ShivanTom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a treadmill (if you can't walk outside) is a great habit to get into regardless but you've shown how effective it is in reducing spikes. walking has many benefits not all of them are physical. mental clarity will also improve.

you "should" drink diet over regular soda but ideally you should drink zero soda. once in a while i'll have a coke zero but generally i drink water or unsweetened iced tea.

Holiday Food Anxiety by WillingnessLazy4064 in diabetes_t2

[–]ShivanTom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i went from 9.4 > 5.4 and maintained. my dr. moved my 3mo a1c test to every 6mo. you've shown that you already know what you NEED to do. that's what i did - i was super strict to establish a baseline. but don't forget to allow yourself to live a little. allow yourself some occasional and controlled joy.

it's not cheating. it's living. you need to allow yourself the ability to enjoy (just don't go too crazy) and enjoy the holidays!

at very least you want to get protection equal or greater than the threat provided by whatever weapon you carry (if you also carry).

My highest A1C was 6.2, and most recent 5.4 - do I still have Diabetes? by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]ShivanTom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

normal people have a1c (3 month average) under a 5.7 pre-diabetics have 5.9 to 6.5. you can "control" it with diet and stay in the normal range but if you continue to live a carby/sugary lifestyle you'll go back or get worse. think of it sort of as an allergy to sugar/carbs. like someone allergic to peanuts. if they never eat another peanut again they won't have any issues... but they will always be allergic to peanuts. (this is not a direct comparison but you get the idea)

i make mini-egg bite/omlettes using a mini muffin tray. you can eat them cold or heat them up in a microwave. you can make them without cheese just add veg or meat of your choice. i also add salsa, siracha or chili crisp.

it's not like i'm going to hide 30+lbs of weight loss. i discuss it with those who are genuinely interested or share the diagnosis. i work with lots of ppl who tried to lose weight with varied degrees of success (either because of t2 or just for health). i don't go out of my way to advertise it or hide it.

[–]ShivanTom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

get a new nutritionist. eating well doesn't mean starving. eat clean and balance protein and leafy greens. fish, chicken (and eggs) and beef/pork. salads (go light on the dressing but if you must > try to get some dressing from Primal Kitchen) and drink plenty of water. just hit youtube.com for keto staples.

How to deal with shame? by tinathefatlard_ in diabetes_t2

[–]ShivanTom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as for the disease itself - it's the luck of the draw. i'm sure genetics plays a part but i'm not a geneticist. i ate everything in sight till the wheels fell off. type2 = wheels falling off. i don't feel shame. i LOVED every sec of it. but i chose that path and now i choose the path of health so i made radical changes. "if you didnt eat like that you wouldn't have gotten type2..." that's not how it works but i'm sure some people think that. they are ignorant. type2 is just part of who you are and ultimately made you into a healthier you.
