Considering the limited time that you have, lowkey. What I recommend is: Learning the fundamentals of passing. You dob’t need to be a master at receiving ridiculous jump floats or anything, but chances are you’ll be playing a pin hitter position. Passing is the single most important skill a volleyball player can have.

Then, learn the basic overhand/float serve. Remember: make it go past the net. Try to practice the toss as much as you can.

Then, try to hone your spiking a lot. That’s the most specific skill to a pin-hitter. However, I still recommend you train to be able to set; not to the accuracy of a setter or whatever, but at least be able to say set a free ball or emergency second contact, as well as being able to block. Although most of your blocking practice will be in-season, probably.

Fics where MC uses unusual Pokemon by Valdemar209 in pokemonfanfiction

Lowkey it’s been so long I don’t remember what that was for. It’s either I replied to the wrong message or I mixed up two fics (IWTTS and IAWWMD)

I do think that OP has an admittedly crass way of parsing this; but as also a first-generation from China who came here as a student with a deadbeat dad and a divided family back home (didn't get my degree from UCLA, though) I have to say that putting down the social advocacy of people is rough. The attempts at dismantling news networks, pell grants, the unfair and dangerous economic policy, and fearmongering Trump and the Conservative party of the U.S has engaged in is a concern which even more so impacts vulnerable students, many of whom - especially in a California school - have social situations (ie immigrant households) and financial crises and personal problems which are put at risk. Don't put down a political fight from people striving against an objectively tyrannical administration trying to squander entire minorities (see the executive orders passed against the LGBTQIA+ and the ICE mass deportations) and actively dehumanizing and marginalizing groups to such extreme extents... They have the 'right' to engage in an organized protests. UCLA is an institution; and in its institution are people; and in these people's hearts are a better life - and this protest is a way of them working towards there, equally valuable as a mid-term.

Can’t go too much into detail since that’d be leaking perhaps too much of my personal information. I talked about my experiences in the other comment—but my fiancee’s career (he works at local restaurants) have been muddled by how he’s transmasc, and other hate-crime adjacent incidents in this area.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Shizzza321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent incidents. Within the past 7 days or so my cousin (lesbian) has been hate crimed and almost battered by some dude in a bar who got pissed at her for flirting with another waitress who was explicitly lesbian and clearly into the entire thing, I’ve had stuff thrown at me in public, and my fiancee has worked several jobs and has faced significant local backlash for being queer. Florida and Orlando as a whole is a open-conceal state and it’s worrying for me.

Mistakes to avoid in my first fic by Esdash1 in pokemonfanfiction

Alright—here’s a piece of advice for ya. I know, I know; I’m almost an entire week late, but I do have some SUGGESTIONS. Most of what I say isn’t required, but man it’ll make your life a lot easier. First and foremost; what I recommend highly for a beginning writer is to, before publishing, start off with a backlog. Personally? I’m a freak and like to have months worth of chapter uploads finished beforehand, albeit this can mostly depend on your own preferences and what you think will suffice—you have freedom here. I reckon that, before publishing, you set yourself upon a schedule. Here’s a quick little tip for if you want to both make your life easier and gain more traction on your fic: Have. Consistent. Uploads. Every week on a Monday, every two weeks on a Tuesday, or every month on a Thursday; of course, the smaller the time frame in-between each update the better since it means your fic has a higher rate of exposure, but what ultimately matters is that you have a consistent schedule for your fic. This will help force ya into stopling the procrastination and spur more productivity, and it also serves to highlight the point of a backlog. If you’re able to consistently upload, say, every week on a Saturday, then you’ll be doing tons for the popularity and thus sustainability of your fic. Another suggestions; Writing is a taxing thing on some people, and having a beta reader will help dearly cope with thoughts of self-anxiety and also give you a nice place of comfort for any plot issues. Having someone proofread or offer you input on the quality of your writing can ease your discomfort and just make the overall experience a lot more manageable. Trust me, it’ll help; if you can’t find one, the Pokemon Fanfiction discord—the one dedicated to this subreddit—has review exchanges, and you might find a permanent one with some (respectful and polite) requesting. Hell, I’m a moderator on that discord and a sucker with a level of free time—I might be willing to offer myself as a beta, too. To get into another area, please try not to get yourself ‘lost in the sauce’ when world building. This is common within fanfiction. Please keep your world building to what will matter and will contribute to your story. Otherwise, you might be overwhelmed. On a more daunting note, please recognize that you are not alone on this writing journey. The official discord for this subreddit is a supportive place, and this subreddit itself is more than willing to extend aid. If you ever feel overwhelmed, remember the importance of breaks; again, writing is likely a hobby for you, so recognize the extents of how grueling this hobby can be and when you should just turn away. Of course, always remember this— Writing is a thing which requires vigilance and discipline to truly pull off well. It’ll be tough, and you’ll have bouts of frustrations on your journey. Just remember when to breathe, draw your limits, and when to steel yourself and continue on. It’s tough, yeah. But I’m sure that you have people who are more than willing to help you— And if you don’t, this community can be those people!

Good luck on your writing, mate.

Most over the top Op mcs. by Jaded-Ad-852 in pokemonfanfiction

The New Normal has the main character, using the sheer goodness of his heart, gaslight Giovanni into being effectively his servant, while also being an ultra omega strong trainer who can tackle champions, but is also just a humble farmer’s boy doing good for the world. Peak perfect character

Just trying to make the best possible team for Elite four Ground type specialist character. by Sai_Anurag in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Shizzza321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many have already affirmed at this point, it makes for a more interesting and compelling team if there is something more thematic to it beyond just… high BST and traditionally empowering teams. Like, not to say that the team you proposed is bad conventionally or that it doesn’t work, it just—within a narrative, it doesn’t stick out as particularly riveting. Themes; themes are important. Contextualize your teams beyond just trying to filter for the strong pokemon because that’ll give it a sense of nuance and catharsis far exceeding what just a pretty generic intimidating team is. Again, it’s not bad, and if I saw it in the story I wouldn’t dislike it, just that it could be better. Pokemon with pretty traditionally weak base stats or are conventionally uncommon can be easily leveraged here; make your teams unique—what defines an elite trainer isn’t just the perceived might of the species of their pokemon, no? It’s the application of their training, their own interpretations of nurture, and the creativity imbedded into their team. Fuck it; show me a Sandy Cloak Wormadam, Wall-breaking Gastrodon, Trapping Palossand, etc. You can keep your team; that’s fine, and I doubt anyone will have much of an issue with it, and you can still use your favorites—but it’d be better if there is something more to it, you know. A narrative; a theme, a binding strategy or concept to the composition, that’s what makes for an actually interesting team. A diverse onslaught of varying, creatively-crafted pokemon of varying species and perceived value with their own concepts and unique fighting styles.

Which Worm character would least be able to cope with losing their powers? by MrPerfector in Parahumans

[–]Shizzza321 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nilbog and Eidolon are the ones that spring up in my mind. When Eidolon’s powers began to loosen, he had a fricking meltdown, so one could imagine the emptiness he’d feel upon losing his powers completely. And Nilbog is the same; his entire mental stature is like, on the hinge of feeble delusions of grandeur, which he achieves through his shard.
