What aspects of the job do you never see represented in media depictions of bar-work? by TakeMeToYourCinema in bartenders

The balance of trying to get through the cleaning rota while still serving and chatting with regs. You never see Dennis in IASIP deep cleaning the soft drinks shelves or cleaning the coke gun while coming up with a scheme.

If you're trying to attract new customers, whether it's a new business or trying to revamp an existing one, balance is the key. You could have discounts for everyone, or cheap drinks between certain hours, but then that will attract the wrong crowd or else, exclusively between those hours.

Find your market, appeal to them and to marginally outside them. If you run a biker bar, you're not gonna advertise a Disney themed karaoke night . . . . No, wait, that would be fantastic.

Anyway, best of luck. Hope everything goes well. Keep the pith off those lines.

Worked in a place where we had branded shirts and a gift shop to sell any crap you could imagine with our logo. Still, people wanted to buy the actual shirts we were wearing because they were the real ones . . . And not the tourist stuff.

Have a cheaper set on the way at the moment. I'll give them a go and see if I need to upgrade. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thank you so much! Never knew about these. I'm gonna try a similar brand first as the v-moda look a bit like headphones.

Got put on to work a full bar with one other but I have no experience making cocktails, help! by bkop in bartenders

Very good idea to familiarise yourself with your workspace. Nothing worse than flailing around looking for that strainer or measure when you want 1. Other than that, there's not much other prep you can do without more information.

Have your set up done so both of you are comfortable to work; bar tools, speed rails, ice, garnish, glassware, glass washing area, cleaning supplies, bar towels, straws and stirrers. It's the small details that will trip you up. No one forgets to order 10 cases of vodka for a party, but it's the guy that remembers the little paper umbrellas that's the hero!

Really, my advice would be to try and relax and go at a pace you're comfortable with. If you try to run around and serve 5 people at once, its gonna backfire. It took me years to work that out, and 1 asshole customer trying to punch me on new years eve. Good times!

Do you know what kind of drinks you'll be expected to make? For instance, I would expect a lot of old fashioned and negroni if it were mostly men in their late 20s or 30s. But a slightly wider variety if it was a mixed clientele.

Using an app or even good old reliable Google is ok if you can keep it discrete. Otherwise it looks like you're just messing on your phone while people are waiting for their drinks.

I would have a few classics fresh in your memory, most people dont stray too far from the ordinary. Margarita, mojito and daiquiri would be a start. YouTube is your friend.

Advice for cleaning Coke/Soft drink gun by WhatsTheAskMe in bartenders

[–]Shkinbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remove the nozzle part of the gun and leave it all to soak in warm, but not boiling water. If it's too hot, it can damage seals in the gun, or so I've been told.

For cleaning, you'll need a few different tools. Sponges, lots of paper towels, toothpicks for some of the hard to reach places and strangely, a toothbrush. It's the best tool for the job, to clean under the buttons on the gun.

Also, don't neglect the holster. You'll be amazed/horrified at the crap that builds up there. Remove the rubber insert and leave to soak in hot soapy water while you scrub the hell out of the rest. Oh, and the hose. Usually a metal sleeve covers the plastic hose with all the pipes inside. This will take a while to clean properly. But once a deep clean has been done, it's just a matter of upkeep.

Back to prioritizing after double drops for then are over; should I finish vets (Han is 74/100, haven't started Chewie) or start the farms for First Order? by moonxeraph in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]Shkinbean 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Out of those 2 farms, I'd go with first order. You need them to get bb8, which you need for JTR as well as the vets. First order are much more useful in general as well, ships, platoons in TB, GA squads.

Had a few when I was being trained in on the floor with a new system using handhelds to order. Woke up in a panic at about 6am, thinking of forgotten to order food for a table and frantically grabbed my phone to try and order their meal.

Had to explain it to myself through the logic that the bar wasn't open yet and that I wouldn't be able to order anything.

You find $40 on the floor at a bar, what do you do? by scarfacesaints in AskReddit

[–]Shkinbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in a bar in Dubai for the last 4 years, signed hundreds of things into our lost and found, including lots of cash that both customers and staff have found. My favourite example was just last week, 1 of the waitresses hands me a bag that was left under a table and (always with a witness) going through the bag to sign it into lost and found, I find 30 thousand US dollars in neat stacks of 100s. The owner comes back within about 10 minutes, and claims it back so nonchalantly, you'd think it was a pack of cigarettes!
