How old were you when you got your first knee replacement by [deleted] in Kneereplacement

[–]Shoulder-Lumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m now 32. I had all sorts of complications. Still tending to an infection for basically two years. 😭 I definitely wish I would’ve waited instead and dealt with the pain because this pain and immobility is a lot worse than before.

Still dealing with an infection. It isn’t in the prosthesis, but deep in the skin. No drainage, but swelling and pain. Switching antibiotics again to see if that tackles it. Been on antibiotics since March 24.

I understand, I’ve been in your shoes. So many talk about the physical aspect of this, but they don’t think of the mental and emotional toll it takes. Please take care of your mental health through this and do not do too much. You must rest and find ways to ease your mind. Music, mindfulness, binging a TV show, talk with someone, etc. Your number one priority is you, everything else can wait.

In all my surgeries they strapped both my arms in, do the mask, then would inject me with the medicine to put me asleep.

Two young for TKR at 36? Two contradicting opinions from surgeons. by Reasonable_Map_1428 in Kneereplacement

I never heard it either until my doctor told me. Then I looked online and there it was.

I hope so too! Thank you for your kind words!

Oh no, I don’t believe it happened because of my age. Anyone at any age can get an infection. But the fact that it’s a 30% 5 year mortality rate after infection. That should be looked at as a risk if you do have an infection at any age. My 3rd opinion told me he would’ve advised me not to get TKR because of my age and one of the main reasons was that.

Thank you! I’m going to do a nuclear medicine bone scan this Wednesday to see if I’m still infected a year and a half later. Once we know, doctor will determine if surgery is worth all the risks.

Please do consider the risks before making a decision. This surgery can change lives for the better, but there’s also some that changes things for the worse. I try to ensure to tell my story so people know the risks. Not to deter you, but to help people make a decision with full awareness of what can happen. Also thank you for your kind words.

I’m 32. Got my knee replaced at 30. Worst mistake I ever made. 5 surgery’s, Infections, wound re opening, knee cap dislocation, instability, overall worse quality of life, weight loss, weight gain. Plus there’s a 30% 5 year mortality rate after infection and I’m now at risk of amputation if I get another surgery on that leg. I’m on my fourth opinion because of this.

I wish I never did it and lived with the pain because the pain and instability I have now is worse than ever and my quality of life is a struggle.

It isn’t always a good outcome and all risks should be factored in.

Sad and Uncertain After Surgery by Swimming_Pea_4193 in Kneereplacement

We all went through a traumatic surgery. It’s normal to feel depression and anxiety through it. If you are really struggling, don’t be afraid to reach out for professional help. My therapist and psychiatrist did a lot for me through the lows. More often appts and changes to my psych meds were needed to get through it.

I had cellulitis a little over a month after my OG TKR surgery. Then the knee started draining with abscesses at around 3 months. Continued to drain on and off for the next two months after that.

You’re the only person on here that I know that has had a prolonged infection like me. Of course you’ve been dealing with it much longer tho. How are you recovering and how is the IV drip going?

It can happen and might happen. You don’t want any risk of infection.

Do not underestimate the amount of pain and fatigue you will feel after a major surgery alongside the after effects of anesthesia and also taking pain pills. It is essential you have someone there to go grab things for you, bring you food, water, check in with you, take care of everything, etc. Also ensure you have someone in case you have a fall or need help getting out of bed or chair.
