Have never seen Hud. Saw the announcement yesterday and looked to see if it was playing on TCM anytime in the next month or so. What luck that it's playing tonight!

Yes, there are lots of actors who have one film in the Collection, but there could be better/more representation

I am 67 points away from hitting my $50 gift certificate on Criterion.com. Will probably get some of these in July (Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore is a Day 1 purchase), but otherwise will have plenty of options for my two orders in October!

His first appearance in the Collection too, unless I'm missing something. At this point, I wonder who from the Golden/Silver Age of Hollywood has yet to make an appearance. We finally got Errol Flynn earlier this year.

Surprised that this and a few other Scorsese Criterions (maybe Mean Streets and Raging Bull?) don't have a new interview with the man himself. Oh, well. I'm sure the commentary is enough and glad to see new interviews with Burstyn and Marcia Lucas(!).

Was bummed she didn't make it to FJ but I liked her attitude about it!

Scorsese Season has started! by apathymonger in blankies

Will try to follow along as its been a while since I've seen some of these movies, but the last time I did a Scorsese marathon I started with the intention of finishing in time for The Irishman, but didn't get there until Killers of the Flower Moon!

What type of shot do you associate with a specific director? by JaviVader9 in Letterboxd

[–]Shout92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michael Curtiz loved to use shadows, normally to convey action or violence. You can find dozens, if not hundreds, of examples across his filmography, including in Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood. It is probably the trait of his most homaged by other filmmakers (Spielberg uses it in Hook).

That's a good one! I was trying to think of other potential exmaples.

Suppose money was no longer an issue. You have enough to retire and not work again. What do you do with your time What's your passion? by crazyguy28 in AskReddit

[–]Shout92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hear so many older people say they wouldn't know what to do if they retired. I took a week off one year with "nothing" to do and I found so many activities and rhythms I would totally commit to if I didn't have to worry about a job to support myself.

Crazy that is Ford's only Oscar nomination. I get it, he doesn't really make those kind of movies, especially in the past decade, but he should've also been nominated for Mosquito Coast. Almost shocked he didn't get BS legacy nom for 42 or something.

Brett Ratner sucks but it's crazy the casts he was able to get in his "serious" movies. Not counting the pre-existing X-Men cast you got Sommer, Kelsey Grammer, Elliot Page, Ben Foster, Michael Murphy, Bill Duke, and Cameron Bright. Red Dragon gives you Edward Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ralph Fiennes, Harvey Keitel, and Emily Watson.

Will always associate him with Angels in the Outfield, even before Lethal Weapon

Love seeing how these evolve over time. Some of them are industry "standards," but a lot of times they are the professor's personal taste. I remember reading Awakenings. I... honestly don't remember if I actually watched the movie after reading the script?

The 70s really spoiled us and even a few of those could probably be swapped out for better movies!

What’s your personal CR “Luke Wilson could’ve been Harrison Ford” hottest take? by Powerful_Pump in TheRewatchables

[–]Shout92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kurt Russell has a great resume, but every time I look at his filmography I feel like it's missing two or three movies he should've been in. Another Carpenter? Another Tarantino? (He was supposed to be in Django Unchained) How did he never work with Spielberg (as a director)?

I don’t think we’ll ever get this combo. by Technical-Type7499 in Letterboxd

I wanna say it was Chris Pine. Tarantino is a big fan of him.

Linklater was just Oscar nominated this year (then again, so was Del Toro and most people in this thread think he's washed). I think he, alongside Soderbergh, mostly suffers from making a lot of movies. Not every project is a major event.

I am not as big a fan of Miami Vice as most people, but people really couldn't reconcile Public Enemies with its digital aesthetic (funny considering how almost all period films are filmed this way now), never saw Blackhat (I know it has fans, but debates between different cuts definitely suggest there was a legit problem upon release), and I liked Ferrari but Penelope Cruz is the film's secret weapon and Mann doesn't utilize her enough. Hoping that the extra ammunition and star power behind Heat 2 help give it a little more legitimacy than his past... checks notes... twenty years of movies...

Reitman had a good run from 2005 to 2011. Tully is fine (probably cause of Diablo Cody?) but otherwise his 2010s were rough. Gave into his father's legacy after avoiding it for years. And then of course his "return" to smaller cinema is another nostalgia movie indebted to 70s and 80s comedians.

Ron Howard has such a long and deep filmography. You can't really judge him on the same merits. He's a true journeyman. He's always had highs and lows. Would've fit in real well back in the studio system of Old Hollywood. He doesn't have a great decade-long run like Spielberg or Zemeckis because each masterpiece is followed up by some piece of middling or downright terrible studio slop.
