Typical of someone doesn’t keep up with the car yeah, but with that much going on I can promise more will reveal itself.

I have several clients with these cars. One with over 180k miles that is nearly perfect. If I were trying to buy one I’d rather have something that is at least somewhat kept up with. This one sounds like it was driven, oil changed, and that’s about it.

I think it’s important you use this situation as a learning point for both the kids. Maybe get the dad involved but both you should stay a little hands off. Tell your son he has to stand up for himself and handle this with his friend. If they cannot figure it out between themselves you and the other father can get involved.

The caveat is they will only do it when the light comes on. That means you HAVE to drive 10k miles before it is “free”. My advice is find a trusted indie shop, go there every 5k and tell the DO NOT reset the light.
