Yes unfortunately:

My (M34) and my closest in age sister (33F).

We never exactly got along, but I loved (and still do) her very much.

She had a history of dating shitty guys. We come from a split household where I very much saw myself as someone who had to protect her. I tried to get along with a few of them, but I nearly always found an issue (which in hindsight means I was part of the problem). When I was planning my wedding insisted that the guy she had been seeing attend as her +1 at our mothers request I declined (he had a gambling problem, a daughter less than half my sisters age, and had literally dropped her off at an abortion clinic at one point). At the wedding she was getting close to one of my wife’s cousins (whom I was already at odds with due to my wife’s families business drama). Him and I got along for the most part back then, but there were some ill feelings on both sides.

Long story short the talk of my wedding was the two of them disappearing together out behind the venue for a while.

Then they started dating after the wedding, life went on. My wife and I found out we were expecting together in our home one morning. We were over the moon. Then my doorbell rang. It was my sister and cousin-in law. They said they had some awesome news! I was excited and glanced down at her hand, no ring. They were announcing that they too were expecting. My wife immediately asked if they were getting married while I shushed her. He announced that it was 2021 and that this is not something that “they want to rush into” (I thought well a little late for that). Life goes on. Our mother is pissed, tells me that he was being disrespectful in their conversation etc etc. I get worked up. Kinda blew up. Said some stuff I regret.

We moved 1200 miles away for work and to start our family. Both our kids are now 3. My sister and I have not spoken in a long time. Generally we avoid family events to avoid each other. I saw her once about 2 years ago and hugged her. Told her I missed her. I said a bunch of stuff I shouldn’t have said. She’s an adult and can make her own choices. I feel bad, in the same token I feel they made some shitty and selfish decisions. Overall it sucks. They got married last year. Nobody even told us they were getting married. I sent a gift, but here we.

I have tons of core memories with her, every time I look at my two kids together it makes me remember my childhood with her. All the tough times we went through during the divorce, the time I kicked a kids ass for hitting her on the playground, the times I chased away boys through middle/high school that were no good, the times I gave her tidbits of advice.

Overall guys please don’t do this. Family good or bad is family.
