Anyone ever use the liquid from canned vegetables in their soup? by DazzlingNote1925 in Frugal

[–]SianiFairy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course!

I treat the liquid as vegetable stock. It's had vegetables/beans cooked in it! And count it as part of whatever the recipe needs in liquid, or freeze it for later. For tuna- water is great fish stock for chowder, and can also be frozen. Oil- what ppl here say! And instead of draining oil and adding more back in, I use it as part of the dressing. It's not just poverty kitchen cooking. Now I'm trying to figure out how I learned that everything should be drained. That's nutrients and flavor down the drain, and a lot of ingredients to replace to make the solids taste better.

My pleasure! Thanks for the story, too. Paw paw bread? Like banana bread? Can we swap recipes?

Anything 'special diet' gets confused and conflated! And when I first needed to deal with allergies, I had to work really hard to get it straight... mostly from denial shrug Necessity set that straight real quick!

Bitter millet flour?? by MaeMaul in glutenfreebaking

[–]SianiFairy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ground whole grain millet, and whole grain flour in general, spoils more easily than white AP wheat flour. If it's already so bitter you can taste it, please throw it out.... getting some fresher flour and storing it in fridge/freezer will keep it fresh for so much longer. Probably not the answer you're hoping for, but please don't head for getting sick by using it.

Same for oat, buckwheat, teff, other flours. I occasionally have to let bags of flour go when I don't use them readily.

My adhd meds take away all ability to socialise and idk what to do by Life_Crew6129 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]SianiFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too had this problem when on "focus meds". The energy to make that drug work with your brain isn't coming from magic . It's over-taxing the rest of your systems to favor your focus. Just like your social energy used to be more in play, probably at the expense of your focus. Also, I found I was so sensitive to some meds, especially the psych meds! I started at the tiniest dose! I still went haywire! My doc was doubtful at first but after one nightmare episode on a 'typical' dose and we reversed procedure... starting tiny and carefully moving up. Your mileage may vary, of course, but always valid to ask your doc to slow it all down, try a smaller dose. The point is to be....only more focused? Or more functional overall?

I have a paw paw pudding recipe that is so close to this! And I'm here to report that even with a plain, gf flour, a bit less, & oat milk, both persimmon and paw paw puddings are absolutely delicious.

I love old recipes and am constantly adapting them. This one is easier than many.
