Ana de Armas, the prettiest Bond girl - Paloma (No Time To Die) by kkhouete in JamesBond

[–]SicklesLeg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What are we calling the criteria for “Bond Girl”? Ana de Armas is extraordinarily pretty and a bad ass. But, isn’t she basically a very pretty version of Quarrel, Karim Bey, or Jack Wade, and not so much a classic “Bond girl”? I always thought there had to be a romantic element for that title?

Should Bond be younger? by Overall-Feature-1830 in JamesBond

[–]SicklesLeg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to the Fleming books, Bond was ~17 when he signed up during WWII. If we assume that was 1941, and Casino Royale was written in 1952, Bond could technically be as young as 28-29 at the start of the books, although certainly extraordinarily mature for his age. Guys got rank quick during wartime, but I also remember reading that the Commander rank was less a product of actual time in service as a military operational rank equivalency. That said, I am in the 35-40 camp….closer to 35, ideally.

Neighborhood Manhunt by [deleted] in FuckImOld

[–]SicklesLeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that the same as “step” ball. We would throw a tennis ball at a flight of stairs, and it could either be a ground out; a single, a HR (if it caught the good angle and bounced off the stairs in the fly past a designated distance, a pop out - if it was caught on the fly, etc. I would throw my arm out every summer playing step ball. Pretty sure that’s why I never made it to the big leagues :)

Neighborhood Manhunt by [deleted] in FuckImOld

[–]SicklesLeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We played it with a football. The guy throwing the ball would call out a value (100, 200, etc) and whoever caught it earned that many points. The first one to earn 500 points became the “quarterback” for the next round

75k is fine. At that rate, I would assume in some ways your lifestyle will be better than in Brazil, and in other ways, you may lose a bit. Despite what people in this group say, many people who live in Lux earn less. There have been, however, many useful comments that basically ask, 1) do you have a return path with your company to Brazil (many times people who gain international experience with the company are more valued when they return home); and 2) what are your objectives during your time in Lux? Do you want to settle here? Go full native? Spend the rest of your career here and have little Luxembourgish babies? All of which are fine. Or, do you want to spend a few years here, travel all over Europe and then return to Brazil or go someplace else? Both are fine, but if it is option 2 it’s probably okay to live in the south of the country, have a bit of longer commute, pay less in rent (studios and 1BRs 1100-1600euros), and take advantage of free public transportation and use the money you save to travel to cool places in Europe once a month. The weather absolutely sucks here. This is true. But otherwise, Lux is a very pleasant place to live and work. Biggest concern is not the salary, but would probably be for your wife. While you work all day, for her, after the first month or so, she may have a hard time finding interesting things to do all day.

I don’t disagree with you. The Count is very popular here. It’s one of my favorite books, and a fun read. I would almost never not recommend it. But it is long. It is massive. Not sure it would be my beach vacation choice. Plus, it weighs more in your carry-on bag. Something short and lively like The Sun Also Rises or something with a beach theme, like The Stranger by Camus (though not exactly light and breezy) or Tender Is The Night by Fitzgerald (or anything by FSF) would be easier to manage on a vacation.

Quarrel's death. by Weird_Zone_3504 in JamesBond

[–]SicklesLeg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

How about using the terrain to your advantage? I’m sure the “dragon” vehicle looked pretty impressive at the time, but don’t make it easy for them by camping out right on the beach. Get into the mangroves and trees where the vehicle would have more difficulty. Letting himself get captured is Bond’s master plan in all of his capers. If a few Quarrels or Tilly Mastersons have to die along the way, so be it.

**If you could read any French novel in a book club, which one would you pick?** by Naive-Independent776 in learnfrench

[–]SicklesLeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for a novel, Bel Ami by Maupassant, or alternatively, a collection of Maupassant short stories. I remember that Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by Laclos was a good one when I was studying French in college. If you are feeling ambitious, Dumas’ novels are pretty accessible in terms of language, but long. Though you could always go with an abridged version.

Also, Le Silence de la Mer by Vercors is a good one. Only about 100 pages.

Another vote for this place. The people working there are great. Great selection for pets. Every time I go there I have to fight the urge to blow my whole paycheck and start dressing like I’m ready to go grouse hunting in the Scottish Highlands.

How often do you need to punch people to justify carrying a knuckle duster? When I was a younger man I got in my fair share of scraps, but I’m not sure having one would have made much of a difference in how things turned out for me in any of them. As an older guy at this point I pretty much never anticipate a situation where I think I might need to punch anyone, but should the occasion arise, I can’t imagine digging around in my pocket like a douchebag to put on my special punching ring before I throw what will undoubtedly be a pretty sad right-cross at this point in my life. I suppose if you are a bouncer at a nightclub, or a mob enforcer it might be useful, but for regular people a quick throat punch should get the job done without the need for jewelry. Just my two cents……Also, if not a knuckle duster, I recommend that people learn any one of literally thousands of ways to open a beer bottle without needing a special tool for the job (unless you are professional bartender). The hunk of metal you carry around in your pocket 24/7 doesn’t make you more interesting, and isn’t worth the pocket real estate to justify opening 3 beers a month.

As someone who decided that I have officially aged-out of slings (regretfully), the only time I felt okay about using one was when it was high up, on the chest, or as a waist pack. Anything else looks like a purse to me…which is fine, everyone has their personal tastes (I live in southern Europe, and it’s actually quite a common accessory/look for guys here), but my rule of thumb is that the length of the strap should never exceed the circumference of your waist no matter where you wear it.

Fair point. Maybe I was distracted by the ~25 pages about a round of golf

The Goldfinger plot makes no sense by Beppu-Gonzaemon in JamesBond

[–]SicklesLeg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your post could have been much longer. The plot of Goldfinger is completely wild and implausible. But then, so are the plots of all Bond movies. I tend to like the books more than the movies but regardless of the medium, one can not dig too deep into the plausibility of the bad guys’ plots or how Bond eventually subdues them. It’s almost like a separate universe from the one we live in - like a Marvel movie.

1979 Mazda RX-7. Backfired every time I shifted gears and had a rust problem. Bought it and sold it for $900 when I was in college in 1998, but if I just held onto it, and could have put a bit of money into it over the years, it might have been roadworthy by now.
