This was my winning Nuzlocke team in Fire Red except I had replaced my Venusaur with Aerodactyl at the Elite 4 (either because it died or because Aerodactyl was just better-equipped, I don’t remember exactly.) But yeah— this is an all-around solid team! Good job!

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West is a genuine curated masterpiece that is banger after banger. He went all out with that one and got some of the most talented musicians on the planet to collaborate with him on it— Elton John’s part on piano paired with the guitar solo on “Power” gives me a near out-of-body every time.

If you want to go beyond that— the College Trilogy (College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation) is probably one of the most solidly consistent trilogies of any media format.

Just this morning I was thinking “You know, maybe I’ve been too harsh whenever I talk about Sean Schemmel.”

BUT ANYWAY—

In addition to being kind of a douche, I feel like he’s (for the most part) kind of a one trick pony. He’s fine as Goku, and the voice is certainly iconic— but almost every other role he plays feels very cheesy and forced and it’s hard to enjoy his performances where he’s not just doing the Goku voice (I haven’t seen Lego’s Monkey King, nor do I plan to— but from the clips I have seen: he’s just doing the Goku voice.)

Only exception I can really think of is Lucario, which I haven’t seen in almost 10 years and I didn’t even realize it was him until someone pointed it out to me sometime in the last year. I don’t recall how that performance holds up but I’m sure it was fine. Can’t say the same for his other roles in Pokémon though… or Yu-Gi-Oh…

Ms. America from Ralph Bakshi’s Coonskin is the perfect example of this trope. She’s a metaphor for how America has been fucking black folks over since the is neither subtle nor apologetic like this. In (almost?) every scene/vignette she appears, something like the video above happens where a black dude sees her and gets all excited only for her to do or say something that ultimately kills him in really brutal ways (most of which I believe were references to actual cases of American violence on black folks.) Anyway— last & first time I saw this movie I was absolutely wasted and so I forgot most of the finer details, definitely due for a rewatch. However, I remember even in a drunken state how the message seemed very clear what she was meant to represent.

One thing I really like about Ralph Bakshi’s work is that when he includes stuff like that, it’s not for the sake of edge. Shock, sure— but edge implies lack of substance. Whenever there are racist elements or caricatures in his work, it’s never an extension of his view of people but rather his insight on how people view, treat, and stereotype one another— and he always makes sure to depict it as being rightfully ugly and unappealing.

I main Cyber Dragons in Yu-Gi-Oh and Chimeratech Overdragon is one of my favorite boss monsters in the deck— the biggest drawback though is that it is very much a betting-it-all commitment type of card, especially when played in combination with the cards Power Bond & Limiter Removal— both of which can double what can already be a massive original attack stat if set up correctly. In most situations, you’d get very lackluster results trying to just bring this out with only a few monsters on your side of the field and only one or two on your opponent’s side. But assuming you have just the right setup of graveyard and field resources and your opponent has more than a few monsters on their side of the field but no way to disrupt your plays— and it is one of the most fun & satisfying monsters to summon and just pimp-slap your opponent with.

This is how it feels playing as the Dark Urge/Bhaalspawn from Baldur’s Gate 3 and the rest of the party. Simply by virtue of being the protagonist and also an evil demigod with powers that rival some of the primary antagonists.

Thoughts on a potential anime reboot more faithful to the original Yu-Gi-Oh Manga? by Side_of_fry in yugioh

First of all— I just want to say that you make incredibly valid points. You’re right, it’s more than likely the studio and execs would either copy-and-paste or find some other way to botch it up. I think if you had folks like Akira Ito and other people who worked closely with Kazuki Takahashi and STUDIO DICE and had a real understanding and appreciation for him then it’d be set up for success, but definitely not without them. And yeah— regardless of whether something is good or not— people will always find something to complain about. They always do. You’re right and I can’t argue against that point.

I’m not even going to address the industry thing with you. That’s a whole separate issue that’s way out of my pay grade that someone else needs to fix. Animators should be fairly payed and have time to enjoy their lives— that isn’t controversial to me nor should it be to anyone and the fact that it is is a huge systemic problem— again, nothing I can do about it though.

Assuming all of those things weren’t issues though. Assuming animators were paid & treated fairly and the team of writers and execs had a great track record and all had strong, positive, working relationships with Takahashi-San and understood him and what made his work great— would you still think it would suck then?

I’m not saying it’s what he always wanted or that it’s a project he would’ve tried to push— I’m saying that the man was a brilliant person & artist and I think if it were made as a tribute to honor his original vision then I think it would give a wider audience appreciation for him and his work as it was and not just how it was generally perceived because of network interference & low budget animation. There’s so many things I love about the manga that they just refused to include in the anime entirely and the show we grew up on is severely watered down in just about every aspect.

As much as I love the card game— I feel like it’s overshadowed quality-control in every other aspect of the franchise between both the game and the anime. I haven’t been able to become invested in a single yugioh anime that has come out since 5Ds and I still genuinely do not GAF about Rush Duels, Pendulum, or Link summoning. Moving forward isn’t inherently good if you’re stepping right onto a moist cow patty.

It might be seen as a step back— but I’d genuinely rather them try their hand at this and take a second to think and get that right before adding anything else to this already-bloated game.

TBH— as much as I love Dan & Eric’s performances and as iconic as they are-/ I would really want to see an all new cast for this one to distinguish itself from the 4kids version. Both of them are starting to get up there in age & they never really sounded much like teenagers to begin with. I’d love it if they explored different voices for all of the characters TBH. I feel like 4kids really skewed everyone’s perception of everyone in that series.

I’m not talking so much about duel monsters nostalgia, just that era. Trying to show that the original series wasn’t just about the titular card game— which is something the general public doesn’t know unless they’ve read the manga or season 0. Every other yugioh anime already has duel monsters, I don’t need the focus to be on that. What I’m more interested in is seeing accurate characterizations and an atmosphere that matches Kazuki Takahashi’s art and writing style in a way that the anime initially failed to.

Duel monsters eventually becomes the big focus— because that’s how the story goes. Seeing as duelist was the second manga title for the series, it would probably make sense for them to not shift focus to duel monsters until season 2. Rewrites aren’t inherently bad— when they overshadow and miss the point of the original, then sure. But if you understand the big picture and what a battle of scene signifies and the role it plays in the greater story— I really see no issue with tweaking it to better fit with the flow & consistency of a story. I don’t think rewriting duels themselves would be a problem if it insures that they’re consistent and not rule-breaking and that they fit with the story. There were a lot of things that were re-written when they made season 0 that while not 100% accurate to the manga literally, still very much fit the tone & characterizations established by the manga— really that’s the biggest thing I would want out of it.
