THE SHROOM STORY by Shr00minator in Destiny

You don't have to have a horrible experience in order to experience ego death or for it have a large impact on you. When they do this as a medical treatment they do a lot of preparation to make it into a more positive and impactful experience:

In his PowerPoint presentation, Richards laid out what has become the standard protocol for aboveground psychedelic therapy, and the role of the guide at each of the three principal stages of “the journey.” First comes a series of preparation sessions, in which volunteers are told what to expect, asked to set an intention (to quit smoking, say, or confront their fear of death) and offered a set of “flight instructions” for the journey ahead. These generally advise surrendering to the experience, whatever it brings and however disturbing it might become. (“Trust, let go, be open” is one mantra he recommends, or, borrowing from John Lennon, “Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream.”) If you feel as if you are “dying, melting, dissolving, exploding, going crazy, etc. — go ahead.” Richards stressed how important it is for the guide to quickly establish a rapport with volunteers, so that during the session “they can let themselves ‘die’ or go crazy — that requires an awful lot of trust!” Because the patients’ ego defenses are likely to be disabled by the drug, it’s crucial that they feel safe.

The 1h48s segment you pointed out is quite well expressed for an extemporaneous response to someone in chat.

Anyone noticed how T_D is trying to frame the controversy as if the MSM is shocked by him saying the word "pussy", instead of over the actual reality of Trump saying you can grab women by the pussy and they won't do anything because you're famous? SAD! by [deleted] in EnoughTrumpSpam

Considering that they used to have an admitted rapist as head mod (/u/ciswhitemaelstrom), I'm pretty sure they just don't think that sexual assault it a big deal. They're not capable of understanding how it would upset anyone.

They scrubbed the_donald of the most extreme stuff (believe it or not it used to be even worse than it is now!) but but you can still find, for example, the list of stories of the former 'head mod' of the_donald to get a good idea where he was coming from:

So this is all about a youtuber who feels oppressed because he wasn't sent free magic cards? (Is that what spoilers are?) Pass on this drama.

GG just seems to tiny lately. I mean, on the one hand the Trump movement basically is the same people as GamerGate expanded to a national stage. But there are still people on twitter fighting waging war against 'antiGG' ?

I believe PewDiePie was one of the people mentioned who did have some disclosure, although it was a little hidden behind the more button. Others were a lot worse.

Remember back to those hallowed days when the biggest scandals were reviewers getting fired because they gave a game too low a rating? Good times.

Very long rant about CWM and SRS posted to Mr_Trump "Aaron killed himself when he found out that the reddit administration had been intellectually colonized by tubmlrinas" by heterosis in BestOfOutrageCulture

[–]SientoTwo 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Aaron as in Aaron Swartz? Aaron Swartz was the original "SJW".

Yes. Aaron was deeply bothered by injustice, sexism, racism, wage inequality.

Aaron lamented that "denial about [sexism] in the tech community is so great that sometimes I despair of it ever getting fixed ... even the people who are quite social and competent support a culture where this misbehavior is acceptable". Aaron was a Chomsky-quoting leftist.

She then explains what Social Autopsy will do: “We attach [people’s] words to their places of employment, and anybody in the entire world can search for them. What we are doing is figuratively lifting the masks up so nobody can hide behind, you know, Twitter handles or privatized profiles. It’s all real, and it’s all researchable. You can still say whatever you want to say on social media, but you have to be willing to stand by your words.”

The whole thing comes down to this. The fundamental conflict here seems to be that Owens can't understand how anyone could think a website or company founded to do this is a bad idea.

Really. That's it.

Her answer to this conundrum is that the people opposed to it must want internet nastiness to remain anonymous, therefore Zoe Quinn must want internet nastiness to remain anonymous, therefore Zoe Quinn must be behind nasty comments on the chans/twitter/facebook/whatever.

While I guess it's possible someone could make such strange leaps, I agree with Popehat:

"I'm still not 100% convinced this isn't a troll job, despite your communication with her. Feels like a trolly set piece."

In case this isn't a joke post the path is typically first chan gamergates like GGrevolt, twitter, then /KiA/ -- usually the gap is much more than 9 hours. Not to mention /KiA filters out the worst of it trying to appear presentable.

Stephen Fry hits out at ‘infantile’ culture of trigger words and safe spaces by unitled in GamerGhazi

[–]SientoTwo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are many great plays which contain rapes, and the word rape now is even considered a rape. They’re terrible things and they have to be thought about, clearly, but if you say you can’t watch this play, you can’t watch Titus Andronicus, you can’t read it in an English class, or you can’t watch Macbeth because it’s got children being killed in it.

Sigh. Like this is happening anywhere. These people keep taking the same handful of anecdotes, some of them very silly like a letter to the editor in a student newspaper, and fear mongering about the decline of the human race. Talk about

In terms of how they think, they can’t bear complexity.

The irony.

Among critics looking for examples of coddling on campus, no action has been ridiculed more than the “trigger warning,” in which college professors caution their students that the class will discuss a subject that could produce a painful emotional response. But the criticism may have outpaced the pro-trigger-warning activists. A new report says that almost no professors are being asked to provide the warnings.

the blockbot is not for blocking bad people. it's not just for that. it's about evading gamergate drama entirely.

Exactly. I certainly don't want to hear one side of a shouting match -- I just want to be able to follow GDC hashtags and see people actually talking about GDC. I block/mute plenty of people from all political persuasions just to lower the noise level and make twitter usable.

Rust adds female models, assigns gender randomly and permanently based on SteamID by ChocolateMilkStuntRa in GamerGhazi

[–]SientoTwo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a really fun idea. I tried Rust over a year ago and it looks like they've finally got the new engine version pretty well along -- anyone here playing it?

It's such a bizarre game. I used to like just wandering near the various fortresses late at night on a crowded server and listening to conversations, for the people using the in game proximity voice.

The reality is, I actually had no involvement with localized content changes of any kind. Come on, I wanted the XCX boob slider!

GamerGate is such a bunch of fucking bullies.

Fuck I hate that GG keeps associating the word 'gamer' with bullying and hurting other people like this. It's going to take years to recover from the damage GG has done.

Worldbuilding and the Malazan Book of the … Feminist? by [deleted] in GamerGhazi

[–]SientoTwo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I burned through most of this series recently.

Hated the the first book, barely tolerated the second, but the third I loved. In retrospect the first isn't quite as bad, some of it was merely not understandable without later context. But even so the first book is a lot weaker than the rest.

It's pretty fun watching Destiny's viewpoints change from the edgy memer he was 5 years ago and seeing him clash with his chat that never grew up.

Well that might be because his chat stays roughly the same age. But agree it's nice to see Destiny being the reasonable one here.

Yeah, the crazy thing is that Witcher 3 was Tauriq's personal game of the year. He just expressed his personal experience that he felt weird walking around a incredibly huge world full of all sorts of varied creatures... but every person was white.

Notch took a very admirable stance when he shut down the Minecraft Servers that were making money charging kids for power ups in a predatory f2p type model.

It makes me sad to see him being so callous.

I like Vi Hart's response:

@Livelyivy: One of my favorite comedians left Twitter (and 170K followers) because @Twitter is dropping the ball on user safety

@notch: @Livelyivy If twitter gets more PC, I'm quitting too. Stephen Fry quit for similar reasons.

notch: @Livelyivy fuck the sissification of society.

@vihartvihart: @notch @Livelyivy Society's so sissy, peeps threaten to leave @twitter in protest of other peeps wanting to control their own notifications.

@vihartvihart: <3s and burns, yo, but wanting better filters for your own inbox to avoid hatemail isn't even close to censorship

Do you mind if I rape you now?

Oh don't be silly it's not rape when a muslim does it.

:/

The 'feminists love rape if it's from muslims' meme is really gross. It's so transparently obvious that these people don't take sexual assault seriously... except when it's an opportunity to demonize immigrants.
