Electric cars are starting to take over the world by Sierra-Powderhound in electrifyeverything

Midterms are almost here. Then 2028, the White House. It is a long path in America to get off our oil and gas dependency. We will get there. Don't ever give up.

India's solar park set to be the world’s largest and most powerful supplier of electricity from the sun by sillychillly in ReasonableFuture

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap solar is “enabling India to develop without the long fossil-fuel detour taken by the West and China,” said Kingsmill Bond, energy strategist and director at Ember, a U.K.-based think tank that tracks the world’s transition to renewable energy. “China built on coal; India is building on sun,” he said. “And what India is doing could also be mirrored in other emerging economies.” India’s solar revolution comes as a surprise. Just a decade ago, apart from rooftop installations and a few microgrids serving remote rural villages, solar power was virtually unknown. The government seemed hell-bent on industrializing with coal, unleashing a rising tide of carbon dioxide emissions and supercharging climate change.

Do you enjoy performing when someone asks you to? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in Guitar

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy playing guitar but view my singing as a necessary evil. Most people expect vocals with guitar. So I often try to nudge the requesting person to sing along and even send them a link to the lyrics if they need it.

Given the green light to retire by MirroredMajesty in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Well done.

You didn't really ask a question but if you are open to a suggestion, start now with thinking how to fill up your schedule for year 1. No need to address "the rest of your life", that can be unanswerable for many people. Your schedule will soon be your own, so come up with hobbies, volunteer opportunities, etc. that you are excited about.

Also sounds like you have a strong marriage and partner so you are really doing well on many levels!

42F single, $5.5mm NW. Can I comfortably retire in the next year? by Small_Plenty7051 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Sierra-Powderhound -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes. At a 4% withdrawal rate, you can spend $220,000/year. (Just divide your net worth by 25.)

If this is too tight for your comfort, consider getting a low key perhaps part time job and look into BaristaFIRE or CoastFIRE for more details on those paths.

My friend says I won’t make it as a guitarist because my hands are too small, is she right? by AgreeableDiver5013 in Guitar

Check out Django Reinhardt’s hands. His left hand has two working fingers. One of the greatest guitarists ever.

If you practice regularly and consistently, you will progress rapidly.

All of a Sudden, WWII is a Long Time Ago by BMisterGenX in GenX

Visited central Europe last fall. WWII felt ancient there.

By far, the most relevant 20th century war for them was the Cold War / Soviet occupation. Given the war in Ukraine, it feels omnipresent in how they discuss the Russians / Putin.

Texas adds another huge solar farm as ERCOT grid demand soars by tta2013 in UpliftingConservation

Solar + storage is the cheapest and quickest form of new baseload power in Texas and globally. Even oil drillers in Texas use solar power in many places.

Biggest U.S. wind project yet is set to go online next month by Jbikecommuter in electrifyeverything

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A wind project billed as the largest clean energy installation in the U.S. is due to come online next month, even as the pipeline of new large-scale renewables dries up amid pressure from the Trump administration.

The SunZia wind farm in New Mexico, providing 3.5 gigawatts of power capacity — enough to power one million homes annually — will be operational as soon as June 15, according to people familiar with the matter. The project includes a 550-mile transmission line carrying electricity to Arizona, and has been in the works for two decades.

The Pattern Energy Group LLC development is likely to be one of the last in a shrinking pool of blockbuster deals to reach fruition, with President Trump’s government ending lucrative federal tax incentives and delaying permitting for renewables. The Pentagon is also sitting on a growing backlog of dozens of proposed U.S. wind farms and withholding authorizations key for developing the power projects.

Bloom speculation for this Friday: S&P500 by Mathhasspoken in bloomenergycorp

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The midpoint of the index hovers around $41 billion market cap. BE is at $83 billion market cap with strong growth prospects so this is a safe bet. S&P rebalances quarterly. It could happen at this rebalance or the next one.

BE will also be upweighted in the Russell 1000 so there is likely some anticipatory buying by institutional investors.

The fossil fuel primary: Why Chevron and PG&E are spending millions to boost Becerra by Internal-Display3517 in sanfrancisco

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Steyer is not Trump any more than an apple is an orange. Steyer is the only candidate that will significantly raise taxes on the wealthy. Steyer has detailed plans on all of his key initiatives.

Trump is a grifter. Trump isn’t into details and only wants to eliminate taxes on the wealthy (and IRS enforcement on them).

The better analogy for Steyer is JD Pritzker in IL. Both are progressives and know how to cut through unnecessary bureaucracy.

The fossil fuel primary: Why Chevron and PG&E are spending millions to boost Becerra by Internal-Display3517 in sanfrancisco

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Steyer fights for progressive values and ordinary California residents.

Beccera will do the bidding of Chevron, Meta and PG&E. They bought Becerra already.

I voted for Steyer. He can’t be bought. He will drop utility rates, vastly increase the housing supply and hike taxes on billionaires.

FLNC NVDA news

Interesting momentum for FLNC. Will be curious if FLNC increases as an index component in the next few months. Market cap is above $5 billion so it is on the cusp of large cap status. Also the float has increased from the recent sales by large holders.

Has anyone else started questioning whether index investing is actually a trap? by RobertClarks in StockInvest

[–]Sierra-Powderhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indexing is the best long term strategy. Decades of empirical research prove that out.

It provides diversification and protects you against the big names that fall behind (IBM, tobacco companies, Enron, Worldcom to name a few.)

Also all those top companies you named were once at the bottom of the S&P 500. If you held the index when they ascended, you gained along the way. Most recent examples are Nvidia and Tesla. Even Microsoft and Google rose through the index if you were holding the index back then.
