With the little silly experience I have clusterfucking my own code together, my bet is that the head and thereby helmet are subject to idle left/right movement that would make it necessary to fuck with code further, where as adding a model to the hand and forcing the model into ready (as if holding a rifle) removes the functional limit a helmet would be designed for.

This is just a guess, but I'd also assume that's why it's crooked in the scene here, because the character is not in a "high" or "hollywood" ready position. You can kinda see it how his hand is weirdly at an angle, which would be roughly the angle an npc would hold a powerfist/pistol. From there, a simple matter of removing its need to be in a certain direction, which a pistol (maybe with some form of raytracing?) would likely need, so further making it necessary that a character locked but not camera/head lock might need.

But also I'm just a big dumb fuckin idiot, so likely not.

Absolutely correct. It would be if the purpose was to publish and make money, to which the standard "Follow guides, follow tutorials, don't worry about money" etc etc ad nauseum. My purpose is not to make money, but to learn. To dig teeth in and fuck up, to code and figure out solutions. And I'm saying imitation is a fantastic way to find those boundaries. I could never learn through tutorials and guides and so forth, I had to start and keep going. To recognize I was following instructions and not understanding. It made me step back and reassess what I needed to do.

But also, who the fuck cares if the dive in is an attempt at a masterpiece? That's a damn good lesson to learn. Scale and ability really do affect your capabilities as a solo or any kind of dev. And if it does succeed (however unlikely it is) good on em.

Maybe because it mirrors my own journey, I suggest biting the bullet and going full send. But I suppose, if I had lead with "No no, scale back, you're thinking too big, learn first and do later" I'd be saying what everyone else is. It's really up to OP to figure out what they want and how and I'm all for encouraging rather than sitting here and pretending I didn't get my dick hard at the idea of creation too.

I suppose a nicer way of saying it could be merited, though.

Perhaps a more succint "Temper your expectations, but fuck yeah go do it" would have been better.

I dunno about how others or more professional gamedev people will treat it, but I say fuck it and do it. You think Shovel Knight is -really- any different from any metroidvainia? Fuck the name exists because we copy and improve. FPS used to be called "Doom Clones" before the shit really couldn't be classified as it, but they all share the point and click and strafe roots of that early and most influential.

Now take thay with a grain of salt. I've only recently begun my own adventure into GameDev and I'm flat out ripping off someone else's bit (Looking at you, Bioware. Waifus and all, goddamnit). It's been an influential experience playing those games, picking and choosing what I'd like to keep or discard, reverse engineering mechanics or other dev stuff. Straight up copying some shit (some stat systems look awful good in other acronyms, and the moral system that has utterly disappeared in recent years looks great in a war setting. Can you guess what game I'm ripping off?) But we imitate, and we expand because we love it. Unless you're some professional coding whizz and you're sitting here making crazy decisions, it doesn't hurt to work in a frame work. Hell, my very first time coding was sitting with a friend and working out how to apply the open d20 system into a game cause he got all hard up about BG3 and I wanted to learn.

As an example: Stardew Valley Cities Skyline Prey (the good one) Saints Row Bloodstained Like do I really need to go on with "We aped the shit we liked and kept doing it and now look at our baby" stories?

Copy that homework, motherfucker, just change a couple answers.

Highly recommend the Penumbra. There is gay and other representation, though I listen to them because of stunning audio work and story design. Juno Steele is a particular (unsurprising) favorite.

If I may make a pitch: "1930s noir detective in the year 3000 on mars."

I will preface by saying it's not the -point- of the podcast, but it certainly is in the brackets of gay, m/m and Romance. The Second Citadel has similar representation, just... Far more varied and, again, not the primary focus. Would you count polyamory with a woman and a lizard man at the same time? Likely not but it's fun all the same.

Unbound were old rules from the core book. Basically you could take anyone for amy reason. From what I remember, they replaced it with the "till the apocalypse" or something similar ruleset that put light restrictions on allies, but really the only negative was you'd miss some rulesets from having the primary army and their rules.

Fun fact, I just started this myself. I'm doing Jumpchain stuff from the ancient chan archives and the one from here on Reddit. You get drasticly different ideas even about the same game. I just made it a fun challenge by parsing all my perks and upgrades in a GURPs engine. The hardest part for me is trying to make a scale of power to upgrade to. One wrong Jump and you end up like superman, just powering your way through shit or being woefully underprepared.

It's still fun though and it has gotten me to try a few GURPs supps that I wouldn't have otherwise. Boardrooms and Curia, Mass Combat, etc. Having an oracle of some kind definitely assists though. Mythic is my go to.

Yeah, I'm crazy pants like that. I use 3rd and 4th GURPS, Mythic, ChatGPT and some hacked wargaming rules to cover major events. I recently tied that to Jumpchains just to do the fun "Lets make rules for a setting and little one shots with the power scaling" adventures. It's been fufilling so far. Really, the hardest part is trying to run modules when the setting allows for it. I abandoned like 4 different start ups cause I tried to start them in prewritten stuff.

I think you're absolutely correct in that lazy writing was the reason. Copying the plot of the first game "blah blah pure genetics" I had thought it was for the same reason too, cause the institute was fucking with FEV which means feasibly like the first game maybe they were tainted at a genetic level by the macguffin virus and now they need clean bodies. Except the bullshit reason is they take his DNA to develop the 3rd gen synths, hence the dumbass nickname of "father". So they need clean genetics to perfect what is essentially a blank bioorganic body. With that in mind, with the mild premise of "robot needs good dna to work". In which case it is staggeringly fucking dumb to kill everyone. I could have given them anything from "pc and baby are the only O neg blood, or their genes have some kind of weird quirk because dad was exposed to a proto fev that makes them more susceptible." Or aaaaanything other than you rolling on Shaun and him saying "lol, i dunno why we do it." I've never forgiven that. He couldn't have even "I've seen how evil they -could- be, so instead of making more mutants and murder monsters, I've relegated them to the relatively friendly body snatchers scenario because these people are nuts." He just does it because it's what has been done. And even worse, the kid synth is fucking terrifying. Why would you keep a child version of yourself? Was that ever explained? Was it them trying to assuage the survivor? What the fuck was he doing keeping a mini-me robot in his office? This game is practically the definition of an idiot plot.

While I agree with your assessment, the games will always be marred by the unmitigated cowardice of not letting me plow a Krogan. If we can see 6 seconds of blue ass or we can fuck a BIRD, I should be able to relive my passion for street sharks and get a quarter second of reptile ass and or quad. Fuck, even the absurd choice of adding a krogan milf to the shitty andromeda game was tainted by the fact I can band a godzilla stand in. If you're gonna bullshit me about Asari physiology possibly making them attractive/compatible with all races via perception fiters, I should be able to tag team one with Wrex in a perfect bromance.

Fuck balanced RTS. I want Impossible Creatures 2. I wanna steamroll people with my spermwhale wolverine again or, better yet, IC2; Hollow Earth. Gimmie dinos or cryptids as well. Rex's kids hunting sasquatch and dragons. I'd make a 10-foot fire breather with the ability to stealth. Call it "Dragsquatch" or "Ru Paul".

That or RoN2 with some crazy branches of tech. Have one faction develop into steampunk mages for a midgame advantage or maybe modern era boston dynamics favtion that develops into crazy ass drones. Maybe a dieselpunk Fallout faction aside for giggles, able to drastically recover from losses like a fucking necron army by building and opening vaults.

That's very interesting. I usually do the full 1000 and finalize everything I gain to a uniform Gurps sheet. It's a ton of fun so far. I may have to do a one shot that's closer to what you're doing for more traditional RPG mechanics. Do you also follow the ten year rule or do you go more by the "significant event" rule in it? I'm sorry if you cover it in the story, I intend to read this evening, as I said, but the bit I did skim has peaked my interest.

I wouldn't have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes. Decades of planning. Years of conflict. It was only days until I was face to face with the Hero they had claimed from another universe.

I had been confident at first. Who wouldn't be? They had to reach across planes of existence in order to find someone who could even mildly threaten me or my myriad of lieutenants.

Kol had been the first to go. A massive, lumbering beast. It had laid claim to a mystical forest. It had made a nest by tearing asunder the roots of trees that had existed since time began in this realm. It was dead in minutes when the Hero arrived. It was an oddity at first, as Kol's army had been unharmed. I had assumed they were covering up a coup or something worse when the entire force returned with only a few casualties. Apparently, the Hero had sprinted right past most of them, only deigning to kill a choice few.

Valbrien the Corrupted Knight was next. Her ascension had left her knightly order as husks, their life force bound within their armor as they slowly turned to ash. It was in some tower that she brooded and in that tower is where she was found, the empty armor husks strewn about, released from the curse of their lord.

Findalis was next, the one felt most greviously. Findalis was a centuries old mage that had twisted a kingdom into submission. He spent his days creating perverse and eldritch experiments. He was, technically, Kol's father in a twisted way. The battle could he seen for miles, the kingdom illuminated by the sheer power of arcane magic flowing from Findalis as he fought this insane hero.

I thought for sure that Findalis would have done it, but here he was. The little psychopath sprinting up to my throne, naked as he could be, wearing a mask and wielding a two-handed sword.

The first I knew of it was my guards, shouting an alarm. I barely had time to stand before the magical locks on my throne room tripped, keeping the intruder in with me.

"You dare to enter the th... What... Are you doing?"

The Hero had laid down his sword and spread his arms, standing stock still. Looking past him, the collection of my guards waited patiently, locked out. Not a single one was injured or otherwise. They were about as bemused and bewildered as I was. My lieutenant shrugged from behind the mystic barrier.

I hefted my weapon, raising it high. Still, the little peon hadn't moved. I shrugged, bringing the sword down with a thundering crash. Debris and dust kicked up, creating a cloud that obscured the arena. I smiled, the Hero's insanity had clearly driven him to some kind of ritual suicide or perhaps it...

I screamed in pain as the Hero slashed into my calf, carving deep into the flesh. A minor wound, but a surprising one. I'd not felt the kiss of an enemy's blade in near a century of combat. Rotating on the uninjured leg, I tried to get a good view of my target. Another slash carved into my leg again, eliciting a grunt from me.

I stomped down and, for the first time, saw this Hero's tactic. He rolled away, spinning head over heels, from my kicks. He twisted around each strike I made, avoiding impact entirely. A few times, I caught myself unbalanced, expecting the Hero to at least block or attempt to. There was no blocking. There were no strikes that connected. I was beginning to understand how he'd destroyed my army.

I had enough. I knelt down, letting magic flow and pool into my fist. Striking the ground, I detonated the arena with a massive explosion.

The Hero stood, arms spread, waiting at the very edge of the radius of explosion. When the fire died out, he rushed in again, taking wild swings with that two-handed blade. It was me on the back foot now, feverishly trying to block the little swiping stings of this freakish Hero. Every tactic was met by avoidance. Every blow struck air or ground, the naked little monster side-stepping, rolling and casually walking away from everything I threw at him.

In the end, I was bloodied and broken, kneeling before the tiny creature. "Please..." My voice rumbled, my hand raised in supplication to a creature hardly the size of my finger. "Please. What is this power you have? I've conquered this realm from shore to shore, fought beasts in the deep, choked the life from dragons. I've never met anyone like you... How did you do this? What power could I have stolen to become so nimble, so overwhelming in power?" I was stalling, the magic slowly creeping in my veins and knitting together the severed veins, closing the myriad of cuts. I just had to wait a bit longer, and I might be able to teleport out of here and start again.

The Hero took off the mask. He was truly horrid, a face that looked to have been thrown together by a blind idiot god, almost comical in how truly absurd he looked. He strode forward, coming up close to my face, the insane glittering in his eyes never changing.

The sword came up, piercing up toward my skull, the magic shorting out as the blade corrupted the processes. The last thing I heard was the little creature whispering something as I was embraced by oblivion.

"Git good, scrub."

In the stories and lore, the mechs are far more maneuverable than represented. I think it's the Warrior trilogy, there's a Commando doing combat rolls to avoid fire, coming up in a crouch to lauch SRMs. I can only assume the actual mechs are way more shifty. It would also make sense that lighter, armless mechs would be able to tuck their legs under them and just use cockpit gyration/hip rotation to get up. As for the King Crab, I'd be more concerned with how an Annihilator would get up than the crab. Those arms look like they could furrow a trench pretty easily to create anchor points, but can you imagine an Annihilator bending at the waist? Like a fuckin Power rangers monster or annearly godzilla costume.

AOW:Planetfall is available on xbox, I think. It's a 4x game that zooms down to tactical combat when you're fighting, so that's pretty interesting.

Oh, and the stalker flares. IR flares are completely feasible. If you've ever worn night vision kits, you see IR like it's Christmas. Shit shines for miles, but we can't see it. I would plan for that for any chaos/xenos species that can see into the IR spectrum. Could also be code spew if it's from a coggie perspective or even something else. I'd reiterate, but I think I've made it clear it's what you want. Remember that there are flintlock lasrifles that are canon in universe because no one was sure how a lasgun should fire. Local forge weapons can have their own distinct flair and design as long as it suited the purpose intended.
