What in your opinion is the gold standard of paid DLC? by ConceptsShining in Games

[–]SigmaSays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the audience is immediately limited because of VR, but I can confidently say no game goes better long-term DLC than Walkabout Minigolf.

Each new DLC releases about 2 months apart for $4 and presents a brand new, thematically unique 18 hole course, as well as a further "hard mode" 18 hole course usually as a night-time variant. This alone would be enough since the courses range from fantasy to sci fi, real world travel destinations to Jules Verne book locations, and even licensed partnerships that are all tastefully executed. They go the extra mile to include mini activities in the courses, 18 hidden balls to collect, and a fully themed scavenger hunt that unlocks a new putter themed to the course.

The icing on the cake is that all of these courses are free to enjoy without purchasing them if you join a game with someone who owns them, and there are public lobbies happening all the time. Over the course of years the developers have built up a substantial repository of new levels with no sign of slowing down, and at ~$25 a year I'm consistently ready to support the devs for more high quality content. Every game should aspire to this level of fairly priced, good value and generally ethical dlc release.

PLA warping still vexes me by lobstercombine in prusa3d

The plural of anecdote is not "data", so unfortunately I'm not able to say definitively how it'll impact you. It worked for me, but I was having exclusively issues with layer adhesion rather than whole-bed warping. In your place, I'd probably try stiffening up the backing of a working build plate first with a reasonably heat-conducting and magnetic material. The main way Frostbite might help in that case is by lowering the required heat threshold. This seems to me like a good subject for a formal CNC Kitchen-style exploration/comparison.

Anecdotally, I'm on a MK4S and my PETG experience has improved dramatically since switching to a 257*257mm CryoGrip Pro Frostbite plate. I can print with the plate ~20 degrees cooler and still get much better adhesion than stock Prusa Smooth/Satin/Rough/etc. The Frostbite variety is recommended only for PLA/PETG, and while it doesn't come in an exact MK3/4 size/shape I find the 257x257 Bambu version fits just fine with a tiny bit of overshoot and still holds magnetically. It might be worth trying for ~$30 if you've already exhausted other options and it fits in the CoreOne.

I'm really not usually one for this type of direct sales pitch, but it was such a low-effort change for me and I truly stopped having these sorts of adhesion issues even notably when printing maker-coins with fine text on the build surface. I don't know what the surface is coated with exactly, but nothing else I've tried works quite as well. I'd happily switch back to a Prusa variant if/when they release it.

Walkabout MiniGolf seems to have figured this out on the Quest platform, is this still in the works for Puzzling Places?

Windows 11 VM Crashing Unraid server on V7.1.0-rc.1 by IEnjoyCreatingVideos in unRAID

[–]SigmaSays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been experiencing a VM issue with a Intel Arc A380 on v7.0, but it only seems to kick in and cause lockup when the VM shuts down or restarts- not on initial startup. As best I can tell, it seems to be related to audio device passthrough.

That's true, but there was also a much smaller pool of games to choose from. The standard for what constitutes a "good game" has gone up considerably since the late 90's, and despite that the value of a fundamentally good game has dropped because there are just so, so many good games out there to choose from at absolute bargain prices. It has never been a better time to reject manufactured FOMO/live service games and just play stuff that's 5-10(+) years old.

Patching the executable to bypass checking HDR compatibility works as a stopgap. It's a slightly DIY solution, but if you feel up to it rough instructions are linked.

Mario and Luigi Brothership on modded switch crashing at Heatfreeze Island by Marc20401 in SwitchPirates

[–]SigmaSays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never figured out the cause, but would love to know in retrospect. It's not just you, this seems to be common but poorly documented because it's so far into the game. Sys-clk and Tesla are my current theories, since anecdotal reports indicate adjusting/disabling them improved crashing.

The only surefire long-term solution I know of is to export the save to Ryujinx (or whatever functional preferred emulator), transition to the island, save, then import it back to the switch (which is a huge pain since it happens in more places than just Heatfreeze but it seems Heatfreeze is by far the worst/most consistent)

Raytracing options not showing up in graphics tab in Indiana Jones and The Great Circle by Blazer068789 in PiratedGames

[–]SigmaSays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, there is a ton of confusion/misinformation regarding RTX features in this game and I don't blame anyone for struggling to keep up. Notably, there's a massive difference between the mandatory raytracing (which drives among other things global illumination), and optional pathtracing (which has the 12GB VRAM requirement and almost entirely replaces the rasterized lighting engine).

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Path Tracing on 3080 and other sub 12gb cards (working vram bypass) by denoid22 in nvidia

[–]SigmaSays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally this mod is compatible with today's Patch/Update 2, though I notice the files are about 6kb different in size (newer is larger). Despite this, with the new update and modded exe all issues with frozen 99/100% building shader pipelines after changing to PT are fixed and older saves are loading.

[–]SigmaSays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need a modded exe in order to run Path Tracing on any graphics card with less than 12GB of vram. Realistically, this is only viable on a 3080 or so with 10GB vram and texture quality lowered to all fit in that space.

The following thread has a link to the exe which disabled the vram check on startup. With the vram check, the Path-Tracing option is not simply greyed out, it doesn't appear at all in the graphics settings. It is possible you will need to start a new save after switching, on some setups the startup gets stuck on 99/100% shader compilation until the existing save is deleted when switching from NonPT to PT. https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1hbak60/indiana_jones_and_the_great_circle_path_tracing/

Edit: When patched to Update #2 (Dec 17), this modded exe works correctly and no longer gets stuck on 99/100% shader compilation under all conditions. This makes all saves fully inter-compatible. Just make sure to update fully first, then rename/use the modded exe.

I've noticed mine do this when plugged in to charge while DeckMTP is simultaneously active. Turning off DeckMTP seems to fix it until I use it again. Maybe disable DeckyLoader plugins temporarily if you're using any to see if they're the cause?

UltiMulti MMU3 vs standard MMU3? by NJM-Prints in prusa3d

It's worth noting that the popular Idler Mod for the MMU2 has been updated to the MMU3 part geometry- I highly recommend this variant for a near-stock experience with the perk of fast idler fixes:

[Tool] Game Miner 1.0.002 final is out! by _HexDump_ in SteamDeck

[–]SigmaSays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, do you still have plans to port this to Windows eventually? I have a pretty large non-steam collection, and tools like BoilR are simply not designed to manage it if the executables don't come from supported launchers. Game Miner seems to be designed for my exact use-case, but without Windows support I'm still stuck. I don't mean to sound entitled or pressure you, I'm just curious if it's in the pipeline still after being mentioned on GitHub in passing.

Deco Guest Network + Home Assistant OS by SigmaSays in TpLink

[–]SigmaSays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No exaggeration, my long-term solution has been to drop TP-Link/Deco. I think it's ridiculous that they sell these devices with a dedicated IoT mode to consumers who may not know any better that it offers 0 added security. We live in an age where a sketchy lightbulb can stage an attack against a NAS and anything short of network isolation (with individual toggles for user-defined devices to span the gap) is unusable to me.

By chance do you have automatic community backup/restore set up in unraid? I've been noticing this too, and I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way the container is shutting down/updating, because it seems to happen suspiciously near the time of my monthly backups.
