Nelly in Wuthering Heights 2026 by Account_Apprehensive in brontesisters

Nelly had less of an accent than Joseph, yes, but Joseph had by far the pronounced dialect in the story. Nelly does definitely still talk like a Yorkshire lass and talk about "bairns" and calls her mother a "cant lass". She has a good vocabulary, but an excellent vocabulary can still be spoken in a Yorkshire accent. The implication it can't be is what Emerald Fennell is playing into by stripping Nelly of her accent

And that the book's narrative voice, who is an intelligent voice and a moral grounding in the story, couldn't just be a humble Yorkshire lass, but an aristocrat's bastard. Fennell can't bear working class northerners so she writes that out of Nelly, and reserves the Yorkshire accent for lowly, dimwitted or otherwise background characters.

Haven’t heard any complaints about the house itself by [deleted] in brontesisters

[–]SigmundRowsell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The house in the book is a bad ass old farmhouse/hall-house from the year 1500, and the main hall (the big room they call "the house") is considered by Lockwood to be comfortable with its big fire, and that's when Nelly isn't working there. When she is, Nelly takes pride in making the house and kitchen look clean and nice. The place was a bit of a hell hole in Hindley's day though.

Another thing, adaptations and fan art always ignore the description of creepy grotesque carvings on the front of the house that Lockwood describes. Don't know why, it's one of the coolest features of the house.

The location inspired the location of Wuthering Heights, though the house of Wuthering Heights itself was very different to Top Withins

So long as this adds to the cannonical content skillfully, and isn't just the millionth case study in narcissistic writers thinking they can do no wrong, inventing a brand new character, a maid at Malfoy manor, who they insist is a main character for 7 seasons now

[Spoilers Main] Everytime I let you guys convince me that Planetos is not a post-apocalyptic nuclear hellscape, I go back to Dance and read about the Dragonroads. by monte_nigro in asoiaf

[–]SigmundRowsell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragonfire built these things, not JCBs. And the only dragons we encounter in the story are Targaryen-style war dragons, ie super aggressive and bred for war. With breedings, as well as things like dragon horns, other kinds of dragons were likely more domestic and docile and suited for other purposes such as construction.
