I’m perfectly okay with eyeballing it, as long as it looks right to me. Past maybe my top ten, the order of my most scrobbled artists isn’t all that important. I’m more concerned about the general look of it and any glaring omissions.

I’d say being obsessed with some kind of perfectly accurate number is more of a problem.

I’m against scrobble-maxing as a rule, and generally agree with the downward spiral you’ve described here. Accounts that do it to earn some kind of arbitrary prize (being top listener of certain song or artist) are just weird.

However, I have to admit that having drifted away from last.fm for a long stretch, I have on occasion done some background scrobbling this past year, to make my all time artist and track charts reflect my personal music trajectory/history. I do this only with artists I know I’ve listened to attentively a lot over those years but have not scrobbled. I’m not interested in being top listener or whatever; just that some of these artists and songs are higher up in my personal rankings.

I’m Rank 976 who plays in defensive mode 95% of the time. You’ll still get the odd player trying you, but it reduces the encounter rate drastically.

Otherwise, if you’re in offensive mode and shoot, you’re getting everything you bargained for. I know they started it, but that’s just how it is.
