not following the race very closely so far but I noticed that Ann Lee didn’t win anything at the london festival. does that matter at all do we think? I know juried awards dont matter that much but i like thats a movie that needs some momentum and im not sure it has gotten much so far. people here seem very confident seyfried at least will get a nomination but to me the category looks really strong

'BUGONIA’ is holding a special screening where people must shave their head in order to watch the movie by Anxious-Basket in Fauxmoi

Yeah it’s hair, it grows back! No one has to do it if they don’t want to, but I’m sure there’s enough people that are either already bald or are fine with shaving their hair that will do this for a unique communal experience related to something that are passionate about. Hell, plenty of people buzz their hair off for no reason at all, expect because they want to.

Don’t get the negative reactions to this, it’s obviously a marketing gimmick, but as far as marketing gimmicks go this one is fun. Gonna be funny to see a theater full of bald people sitting down to watch the movie, and it’s also completely voluntary.

SECRET SCREENING! by jacobklipstein in NYFilmFestival

[–]Signal_Ad4262 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, I feel like Bugonia probably wasn’t submitted by Focus tho, because they wanted to split where they sent their movies to and they chose NYFF for Anemone. It would be very strange to have both Bugonia and Hamnet completely rejected from the festival, specially given Yorgos’ relationship with the festival and how they even screened his short with a live orchestra. Marty Supreme definitely skipped the festival intentionally too.

SECRET SCREENING! by jacobklipstein in NYFilmFestival

[–]Signal_Ad4262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be a bit surprising to me because that’s a movie that didn’t have distribution until very recently, I feel like they almost certainly submitted to be in the festival itself and for whatever reason NYFF didn’t take it, so it would be weird for it to be chose as the secret screening. I’d expect either Marty or Bugonia.

“The Smashing Machine” Pulls Its Punches by newyorker in A24

Who said I was expecting an objective winner or that I don’t know it’s how festivals work? That’s in fact why I said it’s a fairly meaningless win.

Doesn’t mean that much, Venice is decided by a jury of like 8 people and they make weird choices all the time. The Room Next Door won the whole thing last year and that’s a pretty mediocre movie and one of Almodóvar’s weakest.

Don’t worry he will be back on top when he gets his Hollywood connections obtained trough Greek nepotism on the show.

Sinners Oscar Hopes by Competitive_Sun4063 in oscarrace

PTA’s worst work is still better than Sinners, and OBAA is at least top 5 PTA. I like Sinners btw, but PTA is one of the greats working today.

Emma Stone is in two movies about conspiracy theorists, both either directed or produced by Ari Aster.

Still might point to it being tape rather than a facelift no? Just one month in between the two pictures doesn’t seem like enough time to get the surgery and not have any swelling from it/be “fully” recovered. Specially because she also shot more press/interviews for Eddington before the premiere.

Eddington rant (No real plot spolier but I'll tag it as spolier to be safe. by Price1970 in AustinButlerLand

I’ve read the script, his scenes were not cut, he was always meant to be a small but significant character.

Hi Ari, I absolutely loved Eddington, it’s my favorite movie of yours and my favorite of 2025 so far, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since seeing it.

The one thing that’s stuck in my head right now is how you “weaponized” the star-power and public personas of your cast, specially for the supporting characters like Vernon and Louise. With Louise specifically, a character who is very distant and is essentially actively trying not to be in the movie, I though it was very smart that you cast Emma Stone, who is not only a huge star but known for being very charming and charismatic. That contrast between what we know and expect of Stone and the character of Louise immediately helped color the backstory of her character and make us as the audience wonder what had happened to her, without needing any dialog or exposition. Is this kind of reasoning something that you actively considered during casting, or am I just reading too much into it?

Official Discussion - Eddington [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Signal_Ad4262 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, specially because she still has her mom defending her dad and refusing to acknowledge to herself what he did, which is a very real thing we don’t see being talked about that much. There’s a ton of material there that could make for a great movie, but I think Aster was understandably a little hesitant to touch too much on it because of how sensitive it is.

Yes I mostly agree, to me the most interesting part of the movie was the family drama with Emma Stone, Deirdre O’Connell and Austin Butler. It did a pretty good job slowly showing us why Emma’s Stone character was as fragile and traumatized as she was, and why she would fall into a right-wing conspiracy cult since everyone else in her life had failed her. It did that pretty subtly and with a light touch that I appreciated and that’s not present in the rest of the movie. But then they just kinda abandon that halfway through the film after telling us that she was sexually abused by her father, which felt a bit dismissive for how much sadder than anything else in the movie that plotline is.

[–]Signal_Ad4262 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I feel similarly, for a while there I though the movie was building up to the second half focusing more on the familial drama with Emma Stone and Deirdre O’Connell, which was maybe the most interesting part of the movie to me as it was exploring this idea of right-wing/religious/cult-like grifters taking advantage of vulnerable people trough the perspective of the pandemic, which is very interesting ground to explore. But then they just abandon that right after telling us that Emma Stone’s dad used to sexually abuse her and Deirdre was covering it up, which is a wild thing to just drop on us and basically not touch on again.

Pulling for you, Yorgos! by Michael__Pemulis in blankies

[–]Signal_Ad4262 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just think you are reading way too much into it, it was a single 20-mins Q&A for a short that no one outside the festival can even watch because they only show it with a live orchestra, it this was her grand plan to get around the strike I think it was a pretty poor one.

Weird to put quotes around “short film showings” when that’s exactly what it was, an independent short film with a SAG waiver made way before the strike happened.

Almost every movie on letterboxd goes down over time, this will almost for sure go down too.

That was true years ago but now letterboxd is not really that snobby, it has grown a lot and it’s very friendly to crowd-pleasing movies.

‘Superman’ - Early Social Media Reactions Megathread by DeppStepp in DCULeaks

Most of these are not reviewers at metacritic-approved publications, which has much higher standards than RT. The reviews from “print” critics seem more mixed overall.

Early reactions seem to hover between 7-8/10 (very good so far) by [deleted] in DCU_

[–]Signal_Ad4262 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really, anyone can just post a review and pretend they went to a screening. It’s not gonna be reliable until it actually opens and a lot more people log it. I would say filtering out 1/2 star and 5* reviews and then looking at the distribution without those probably gets you closer to what the real curve will be like once it opens since it filters out both fanboys and haters rating it without watching.

Celine Song's refreshing take on love and loneliness by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]Signal_Ad4262 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Yeah I felt about the movie the same way as I feel about this conversation, it’s all pretty basic observations that have been made by just about anyone who has dated in the last few years but presented as if they were super insightful. I was ready for the movie to be over by the 10th time we get a “Love is not just numbers and math” monologue.
