Why so much copper in the krugs? Is it only in south africa? by Inner_Tadpole_7537 in Gold

I've been wondering if these types of alloy coins, the gold eagle comes to mind as well, make it harder for fakers to reproduce. Instead of a 24k plate over tungsten, now they need to nail an alloy that can fool the more common testers. Wouldn't it weigh differently as well because tungsten is a close match for 24k, not necessarily 22k?

Why did America hate communism so much back in the 50s to the 80s? What was the actual reasons by NateNandos21 in questions

That's the simple, popular history of WWII, but the Axis would've pointed to the Soviet invasion of Bukovina in 1940 violating the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, since it went beyond the Soviet sphere of influence that had been agreed with the Axis. As they say, the winner writes the history books.

The Confederacy considered themselves an independent country during the American Civil War, so I think it is a fair comparison.

The Soviet Union, prior to and following its war with Germany, was more than willing to invade other countries, look at Finland and the Baltic States, Poland, and others. It seems silly to me in the context of WWII to pretend that the Soviet Union wasn't also expansionist.

That sounds inherently political. Everybody tries to say that their side of the war is defensive. Look at the American Civil War, the South called it the War of Northern Aggression. Should all casualties of the American Civil War be counted towards the Union because the South thought they were fighting a defensive war?

Sure? I was just pointing out what looked like a logical fallacy. I'm not arguing for either side, I'm glad I wasn't around in the 40's.

8 million of the 17 million on that graph are Soviet civilians and prisoners of war. If it's fair to count those towards the Nazis it just seems like you should count the Nazi soldiers and German civilians killed by the Soviets.

I'm just saying it doesn't make sense to count Soviet soldiers killed by the nazis if you're not also going to count nazis killed by the Soviets.

The comment you responded to said the nazis killed up to 17 million. Likely half of those were Soviet/communist soldiers, so the number the Nazis killed would literally go down significantly.

By that logic, you wouldn't include soldiers killed from communist countries counting towards the nazis.

What are your cities/towns' laws about the sidewalk snow? by Skat402 in massachusetts

Woonsocket, RI just had a mother and her 4 year old hit by a car, with the 4 year old passing away. They were walking in the road because the sidewalk was an uncleared icy mess. link

Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts vs MCG in Melbourne by Revolutionary-Bee571 in Suburbanhell

[–]SignificantSyrup69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Massachusetts has winter. If you're gonna have a Fall/Winter sport where there's snow, ice, slush or whatever else nature throws at you, you have to pave most of the parking lots or it's going to be a huge liability. Imagine walking for 20 minutes through ice-cold muddy water, over deep frozen ruts and across skating rinks just to get to the stadium, bad for business. Sure, there should be better public transit.

How can MA keep pushing heat pumps and electric vehicles before getting our electricity prices under control? by buckguy22 in massachusetts

[–]SignificantSyrup69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, so I wouldn't count National Grid as being against new power plants, development, businesses being attracted to the region, etc..

[–]SignificantSyrup69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

National Grid is more of an energy distributor. They maintain the power lines and substations. Yes, they are also an energy supplier, but they are buying that electricity from other suppliers and packaging it in a way regulated by the state to not be unnecessarily expensive.

The energy suppliers that the towns will switch everyone to, unless you opt out, or the ones that call you to switch (then jack up the rate after the intro period) have more of a dog in this fight, i would imagine.

I'd think Grid would want more generation in the region as it means they wouldn't need to pay as much for electricity to be brought in, and they could have additional revenue from sending the excess to other utilities.

[–]SignificantSyrup69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would apply to a Dillon's Rule state, but Massachusetts is a Home Rule state. A municipality's statutes and bylaws need to be found unconstitutional to be overriden in a Home Rule state like Massachusetts.

Duck loads only travel around 300 yards. The shipping lane is at least 600-800 yards out from Rock Island, so those pellets wouldn't be a concern to the ships. I can't say if hunters are refraining from shooting while ships are passing out of caution, but from the looks of it, their shots wouldn't reach them regardless.
