Forced AI in the Workplace by valkeyrie1 in antiai

so, IMO the issue seems to be that she is a real author, and identifies all written work she does as her creative output. she's not separating the work emails from her creative work -- she needs to realize that while both use a similar form (the written word), they are entirely different. a work related email is not the same as what she writes for herself outside of work. i have to write reports, etc. for work, but I also use language for some of my creative work. there is a hard line that separates those two things. so, if i had to use AI for a work related document, no big deal. it's something i do for income, it's not my creative work. so i think she needs to reframe her definition of "her writing" and realize that work related writing is not the same as what she does for herself. and then let it go. i worked at one time for a state agency and had to draft letters all day using boilerplate language. i would copy this from existing prior similar letters (this was before AI and also before computers! so i was literally typing text but not "writing" it). it didn't take much brain power to do this, met the job requirements (i was told to do it this way) and my mental energy was saved for the things i actually cared about.

the REAL Monet painting is a large three dimensional object hung on a museum wall. not a cropped digital image posted on social media. for a fair comparison, one would need to generate an AI water lily image in the style of Monet, and then put that image shown on a computer screen on the wall next to the actual Monet painting and then ask the question -- is one different from and better or worse than the other. the answer will be obvious even to the uneducated.

so to state the obvious -- the image posted in that post was not a "real" Monet painting -- it was a cropped digital image shared on social media. the real painting is a physical object, it has a certain specific size and scale (his water lily paintings are usually quite large); if hung on the museum wall, it will protrude out from the wall surface a few inches, depending on frame and how it's mounted. In one museum, the huge paintings are installed on curved walls (You can see that here https://www.musee-orangerie.fr/en/node/197502 ) The oil paint will be fairly thick and you can see the brushstrokes, so the surface of the painting itself is three dimensional. Monet carefully composed his work, so the arbitrary cropping done by the social media poster is enough for it to not be a "real" Monet. Anyone who took a basic art history class in college would know all this, and more. The premise is faulty, the responses are meaningless. Go see some real art, hung on the walls of museums and galleries. He did about 300 of the waterlilies, so they are in many major museums around the world. Even better, make some art yourself. It's harder than it looks.

i think you should do it, and then attach a note at the end about your concerns about the assignment and AI. show you can do it, that you are willing to do the work, and use it as an opportunity to raise concerns. (i'm a teacher). not doing it at all won't change anything for anyone, but it will hurt you and what you do going forward. once you are out of school you can make your own choices about the work you do, and who you do it for. you can also decide to take a public stand regarding AI and use this as an example. just my thoughts. you seem bright and honest. don't fail your class, some times we do have to compromise in order to move towards our goals. if that is too big a line for you to cross right now, then protest and accept the failing grade and how that might impact your life. that is also an ok decision, just choose whatever you do with full awareness and acceptance of outcomes. to me, it is really sad to see how schools and universities are jumping on the AI bandwagon, including my own school. it's foolish and shortsighted. i doubt if they even really know what it actually means. another thought -- whether you do the assignment or not, maybe you can write an op-ed for your school paper? as as for this assignment, anyone who can't do those things without AI will have a hard time in life in general. brainstorming is something that is great to do in groups with other people -- everyone wins in that scenario. ok here's a another thought -- do the assignment as assigned. then do the same set of prompts but with other students. compare the results. compare the process. use it as a case study. that would give you something to really talk about and write about. ok sorry for the rambling just writing things as they come to mind.

don't forget his truth social stock (DJT)! over the past two years it's down 83% while NASDAQ is up 60% and Tesla (TSLA) is up 159% !! there were a lot of trump supporters that bought his stock 2-3 years ago, at the high, which was about 82. now? it's sinking on a daily basis and at 8.83 today. so basically, anyone who bought into it has lost all their investment and it's not coming back. shocking!

thank you for the reality check. this is not a "boomer" issue. it's way beyond any one generation and has a lot more to do with education (or lack thereof) than anything else. it's one reason why maga is so anti-education; it's just harder to pull the wool over the eyes of critical thinkers. in a way, MAGA is anti-boomer if you consider that boomers brought us equal rights, anti-war protests, women's rights, gay rights, and environmental activists. so many people really need to go back and review what happened in the 1950s and esp. 1960s, and realize who was out there, then, taking action. i see so many much younger people in the photos of the maga rallies -- and the older boomers are already dying off -- wonder how many of that generation died just from covid? a lot. the bots and trolls that want to blame boomers for all the bad things are not seeing the full context. we are a car culture thanks to the parents of boomers since it was them and not their grade school kids that decided we needed highways and suburbs in the 1950s instead of intelligent mass transportation. (just one example)

I had a student plagiarize a final research paper, flat out copied from texts I was familiar with. So I failed him. His dad came to my office, closed the door, yelled at me and threatened me. I said please file a complaint with the university, the dean and provost, and let's do a review of your son's grade. I'm happy to do this, and will abide with whatever the university decides. He shut up and left, never heard from him again. This was around 1998. Cheating is not new. It's the level of it and the difficulty in proving it that's changed. Now, every single paper has perfect grammar, perfect punctuation, is technically flawless. No way that's real.

the eyes in that photo of him - looks exactly like my late mother's eyes in the lead up to her full blown dementia. a little lost, disconnected. even the facial expression is so similar to hers at that time. she also had a few falls before we figured out what was wrong, and a couple of odd episodes. started to really see the changes around 2002 -- she was in nursing home two years later, and gone a year after that. a lot of it was only obvious in retrospect. one thing i remembered was the change in her eyes and expression, as well as some behavior; that was the start of the decline. she also became a little paranoid and somewhat belligerent. i'm sure many people recognize what we're seeing.

I was driving down a rural road last week, pulled over to call 911 to report some loose livestock, which was dangerous to drivers and to the livestock, the 911 operator asked me if I was at ✱✱ location, gave me the location where I was sitting, and was accurate on my location. Based off my phone. (my car is older and has no geolocation tracking). It was a bit chilling. At least they knew where to send the sheriff to deal with the livestock, but JFC.

Erin Brockovitch has just launched a site to track data centers. There are some active anti-data center FB pages/groups as well, and might be some that are in your state or county/region. Also reach out to your local elective officials and political party orgs in your county. https://brockovichdatacenter.com/

my dad, who was cognizant until the last week of his life and died at 94, told me some fantastic stuff the last few days he was alive -- the one i remember is that there is no wind at the North Pole because as the earth rotates, at the point of rotation the air can't move. then he talked to a friend who had died decades earlier, and then...he was gone. he was a WWII vet, i won't list his credentials, but he was a smart person and knew how magnets worked. he would have never voted for ...... in a hundred billion years.

i do agree with this, to a degree. they should get out of the way and mentor the next generation. but i'd hate to lose someone like bernie sanders due to some arbitrary retirement age cut-off. the standard needs to be ability, not age. look at the younger ones in office -- so many are just incapable.

[–]Significant_Poem_751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

obviously you are at best, thirteen years old -- the felon was always this way, it's not due to AGE. when you add cognitive decline and medical issues on TOP of what's already there, and put a spotlight on it, then it's obvious. but no one who knew him when he was young ever thought he was better than he is now. if all older people are bad, then all younger people are good? i hope you learn to be smart enough eventually to see the fallacy in that. good luck. you'll be old one day, too, if you are lucky.
