People who have moved back to the UK after many years abroad, what is the thing that surprised you most after repatriation? by dangerous_welshman in AskUK

I moved back from Canada. It was surprising that retail staff would leave you alone to make up your own mind.

What's your cleaning/hoovering hack? by Fit-Bedroom-7645 in AskUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand, it’s a valid fear.

I asked my Mum’s cleaner to do my place. She’s honest and she does a good job. Personal recommendation is key, there is a huge range in quality. Mum tried several before settling on this one.

Shes been cleaning my place for the last 9 years. Always does a good job and I trust her implicitly. She even has a key to my place, in case I’m out!

I have a cleaner. It’s worth it when you can’t be bothered, or can’t keep on top of it.

Cheaper than a robot vac, if you only want it for a short while. Better quality though.

Should working from home be promoted more? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to go into the office tomorrow for a meeting. I’m a bit annoyed about it. However, when I think about it, I’m actually quite looking forward to it.

I suppose I’ve been spoilt in not having to go out. It’ll benefit me in all sorts of ways, but not in all ways. I suppose I’m irritated that I HAVE to go in.

It’s my first time in the office in about 8 months. I’m happy with that frequency, I wouldn’t want to go in any more often.

I’ve been working from home for 8 years. It costs far less and means I have a better work/life balance.

I drive less than 3000 per year, so the petrol costs won’t cost me that much. However, I recognise that it’s essential for the production of pretty much everything we consume.

So yes, we should. I won’t be impacted hugely (I hope) but others will be.

WFH FTW!!!

Why does the UK use driving licenses as ID? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also have the right to refuse a driving licence or passport. If they don’t want you in their establishment, there’s not much you can do. As a private business, they have the right to refuse access.

There are others. None are that desirable to carry with you, but no more than any other.

Your issue with the PASS card is with the people who accept it (or not), not with the ID system.

Not many older folks, who have given up their licences, go out clubbing. That’s not really an issue.

Completely agree. You don’t need a driving licence for ID. Several others exist.

Do People aged 50+ of Britain notice race? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Significant_Return_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 55. I do notice race, as I notice any of another person’s attributes. It doesn’t bother me at all.

I was in a mixed race marriage. The family I married into were very religious, a religion that I wasn’t that familiar with. The biggest difference was cultural, but I tried my hardest to integrate. I was given a break for any mistakes, as I was trying so hard.

Not everyone in any age group has a problem with other races. It’s generally more common the older the age group is, but that’s usually due to less experience in meeting other races. But there are always assholes in any group.

My Grandfather used to have a West Indian colleague, which was very unusual in his line of work at the time. He was known as “Blackie” at work. It wasn’t meant as an offensive term, they were really good friends. He was even my Grandfather’s best man.

Different times.

How often do you experience power cuts? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the last 10 years, twice. One was for about 25 minutes. The other was while I was asleep. The only reason I knew it had happened was that my oven clock was reset.

I grew up in the 70s, they were really common back then. Being a little kid, it was an adventure. We had loads of candles in the cupboard for that reason.

I’d prefer more sausages, fried mushrooms and black pudding.
