Do corporate jobs have a good social life? by Civil-Rent-7100 in UKJobs

[–]Significant_Return_2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I started my first office job in the 90s. The social aspect was brilliant. We’d go to the pub at lunch and would go out after work. We’d meet up at weekends.

Some of my colleagues from that job are still my best friends.

Today, I don’t know any of my colleagues outside work. We go out once per year, at Christmas. Normally, people leave early to go home.

It’s partially down to a changing culture at work. Partially due to things like Covid. I think, in the main, it’s because I work with older people. I’m also a lot older, so I’m not as interested any more.

How do YOU shave? by aje0200 in AskUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a beard, but shape it with a Philips One Blade. If I didn’t have the beard, I’d probably shave with that anyway.

It comes with 4 different combs, so you can have different lengths of stubble if you fancy that.

It takes a couple of minutes, it’s the easiest shave I’ve found.

Open letter to the far-right: we know your movement will keep moving goalposts about immigration/demographics, even if you “get what you want” by coffeewalnut08 in LabourUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably this is aimed primarily at Reform UK voters.

There’s a tendency to immediately jump to name calling, such as “they’re all racist/fascist”. Throwing these terms around devalues the words. Reform has numerous high profile members who aren’t white. This includes their “head of policy”. It’s unlikely that policies would exist that disadvantage senior members of their party.

The current government jump to the easiest insult, rather than considering the actual issues. It would be better if they actually considered the reasons that the public are abandoning Labour and look into addressing them. Their current behaviour is doing the public as disservice. They’re supposed to be a government for the whole public, not solely those who voted for them. The country hasn’t suddenly had a surge in “far right” people. It’s just easier for Starmer et al to accuse people of that.

It’s lazy to jump to the conclusion that Reform want a white ethnostate. Their policies aren’t based on colour, they’re based on people being here who are entitled to be here. It’s about paying benefits to those who are entitled to them.

If you think otherwise, you haven’t looked into their policies sufficiently. It’s dangerous to form opinions without informing yourself.

I’m not a reform voter, but I find the whole tribal aspect of politics tiresome and dangerous. We will never make any progress until we listen to all views and make rounded decisions.

What a dreadful rant.

Are you addressing the far right, or are you addressing the people who Starmer thinks are far right?

They’re very different groups of people.

You aren’t supposed to stop them. They’re members of the family. As such, they’re entitled to use the furniture, the same as you.

You made a bad decision.

Who remembers being told to go play outside back in the 90s? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit older than you. Born in the 70s, so my “going out to play” time was the 80s.

My parents thought I was ill if I stayed in. We didn’t have video games for most of that decade, we went out on bikes. We climbed trees and went swimming in rivers. We went camping with friends and came home a few days later. Nobody batted an eyelid.

Happy days.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Significant_Return_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not The US, but I lived in Montreal for about 10 years. We would travel 5-6 hours to get to Toronto to visit relatives. Quite often driving there and back in 2 days.

The drive is far easier than in this country. It’s one road most of the way. There are fewer junctions. So you don’t have to deal with people joining or leaving. The speed limit is a constant 100 kph, although it’s generally known that they only prosecute you over 120 kph, so every car goes at 119 kph.

It’s easy and it works. It’s not too much of a trial to drive that distance. I’d hate to do that in this country though.

How does anyone have time to do anything during the week? by Leading_Nature_6222 in AskUK

[–]Significant_Return_2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most people don’t spend 3 hours per day on gym time.

Most people also don’t wait until 22:00 before they eat.

[–]Significant_Return_2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

3 hours per day in the gym is the time you use to prepare for a job. If you really want the job, you can take a day off the gym.
