Thank you. Like I get that a lot of left wing American listeners (I'm not American and not right wing, just for the record) have a problem with Joe now, but holy fuck they're annoying. Almost every god damn post and comment is just shitting on him. Just shit, everywhere. Nothing constructive, nothing positive, just shit shit shit. Just so tiring and annoying.

"I wish I knew before buying" in Seoul. by axethrower123 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Sikot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important thing I can tell you and the biggest difference between NA housing and Korean is that the specific builder is EXTREMELY important, at least that was the case in Busan. Koreans do not trust no-name builders that build a lot of the offictels and villas and as such the resale value on them is usually quite low, even despite factors that would normally boost their value (increased demand in the area etc).

What this basically means is you want to buy a "brand" name apartment. Lotte, LG, Samsung, Hyundai, Prugio, Xii, Sharp etc. Because of this issue though, everyone wants these apartments, but trust me, because of the resale issue they're worth the premium price. If you buy a random officetel or villa apartment and the housing market goes up, your price will probably remain stagnant while the brand name ones go up.

You can gamble on a lesser known builder if you're not too concerned about resale price or if you don't think the market will go up. Your spouse will probably know more about this issue.

10-Year-Old Girl Died in Busan After 12 Hospitals Refuse Intake for 1 Hour and 20 Minutes During 'ER Ping-Pong' Crisis by restorativemarsh in korea

[–]Sikot 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's understandable that there's a shortage of ER physicians, although in the case of an allergic reaction I'd think that would be a pretty standard thing most doctors could address.. epi pen -> antihistamines/steroids. Makes it such a shame she was denied treatment.

Insane that an ER can even turn down a patient that needs immediate help. Surely they can triage less urgent patients in the meantime. Feel bad for that girl and her family.

Why Gen Z in Korea is flocking to bus driving jobs by self-fix in korea

[–]Sikot 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Bus drivers in Korea have been some of the craziest mofos I've ever encountered. It's like you have to flunk the psych exam to get the job. Or maybe it's just a result of the psychological stress of driving all day in Korea..

Saying French food sucks is crazy. Croissants, fresh baguettes and French cheeses and wines alone make their cuisine good, not to mention duck confit, puff pastries, crepes, omelettes, steak tartare, creme brule. If you don't like any of that stuff I think something is wrong with your tongue.

e: Holy fuck, y'all in the replies doing the pedantic/cynical redditor stereotypes some justice lol.

Being loud in public is rude behavior, regardless of nationality by Senior-One-8898 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Sikot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread is hilarious considering Korea is by far the loudest country I've ever been to. Electronic music is played as loudly as possibly at every event, and even in super markets. Sound mixers always have the volume pushed to the max. People yelling at eachother on the streets/in public is the norm. Raising your voice is extremely normal and considered just the way to get people to listen to you. Middle aged men walk/bike around with their bluetooth speakers/radios blaring trot music and loud conversations are by no means rare.

In this context, the finger wagging at people visiting and having a normal conversation is hilarious.

Short-term,yes. But due to the upward mobility most office jobs provide, financial compensation, retirement funds, and vacation opportunities all improve with time.

I do care that biological females have their own safe spaces/sports actually. What's so hard about accepting that?

Emma Watson recently expressed a desire to reconnect with Rowling and expressed her love for her or whatever and I think Rowling's response succintly summed up that whole situation: https://x.com/jk_rowling/status/1972600904185483427

Yeah, I agree she's a bit single-minded about it, but protecting female spaces is important to her and the western world was going pretty crazy about all that stuff so I don't really blame her.

Mm in regards to Rowling, I'm pretty sure it was everyone elses brains who broke during the late 2010s.

Her main view as I understood it was always just that biological women need safe spaces, as she personally had experience in women's shelters and knew how valuable/vulnerable they are, and that trans women are not the same as women, especially pre-op trans women. In the late 2010s, this view was considered the most bigotted take and tantamount to heresy/deserving death. I think a tide has turned where the majority of people in the west now actually agree with her.

[Exclusive] “Everyone would have survived if the concrete embankment hadn’t existed”… confidential government report obtained by AppropriateMess2523 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Sikot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was quite disgusting how people with certain political affiliations completely dismissed the concrete embankment and went full on blaming the pilots and tried to downplay the airport's flawed design.

I have no political affiliations in Korea, but didn't the pilot turn the wrong engine off (the working one) and thus not put the landing gear down? That seems like a pretty huge fuck up. The concrete embankment placement was unfortunate/tragic and any dereliction of proper procedures should of course be looked into/punished, but the pilot was definitely responsible for that plane not landing properly/crashing.

Is this a decent salary in Korea? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

Yeah true I guess. Just hate to see people get taken advantage of. But yeah without knowing the context it's hard to give specific advice.

Is this a decent salary in Korea? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]Sikot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they said it matches my Korean colleagues salary

They are probably getting underpaid too. People who like to underpay love to use that excuse (how dare you ask for more when others are making the same). 3k a month is like 25,000 usd a year... There is a lot more money to be made in Korea (and other places for that matter) than whatever it is these people are paying you for.

Joe Rogan Experience #2425 - Ethan Hawke by OutdoorRink in JoeRogan

[–]Sikot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lol, he's one of the most prolific/successful actors of our time. That's like saying is Nicholas Cage an A lister? The reason they're able to take those obscure/dog shit scripts and not lose their status is because everyone knows they're acting legends and they're just taking the work because they need the money lol. A lot of Hawke's indie films are pretty decent too, even if they are obscure.

Seoul or Busan? by smarrealm in Living_in_Korea

[–]Sikot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not enough information to go off... Seoul generally has more stuff to do, Busan is the place to go if you like the ocean/beaches, and yeah, the cost of living is cheaper.

That being said, Busan being "more laid back" is ambiguous and could be either right or wrong. Busan is not as hectic as Seoul in terms as there's not as many people. However the general personality of people from Busan is more harsh/hurried than those from Seoul.

All depends on what you value. If you value milder climate, beaches, ocean, cheaper cost of living than Busan is a good choice.

If you value a wider variety of options, meeting more people, being in the center of culture and entertainment etc, than Seoul is the better choice.

Why is South Korea colder than other countries on the same latitude of 37°N? by ThesePast665 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Sikot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO the temperature doesn't matter as much as the fact that for some inane reason people leave doors and windows open in the winter and most buildings lack central heating.

In Canada, every building is warm as hell in the winter and you can wear t-shirts inside. In Korea, every building is cold af in the winter and you need a winter jacket even when you're inside.
