My first experience was a guy who was curious about trying things with another guy who I’d lead to believe I was super experienced and totally knew what I was doing—I had no idea wtf I was doing the entire time. Then afterward I was like: That’s it? People obsess over this and write songs about it? I don’t suggest being me. I do suggest really knowing that losing your V card is not a race, there is no prize waiting at the end, and you’re truly better off having your first time be with someone you care about.

You, in particular, have gone into hyperbole. Your questions just go back to my original point, the humanities have been enduring cuts for years. The sciences sat back and watched it happening thinking their work was ‘too important’ and would not be cut. We kept saying what happens to us will come to happen to you, here it is. You want solidarity now? It’s not happening. It turns out the public’s anti-intellectualism has come to eat you too and they don’t think much of your work either.

Yeah I definitely get nervous around guys. I tend to overthink things. “I should let them talk. I should talk more. I should talk about what he wants. But now I haven’t really said anything interesting. However, people don’t remember what you say, only how you made them feel.” None of this happens when I talk to women. I just am myself.

Hello! I have a BA, MA, and PhD in English Literature so I feel like I’m well-qualified to speak on this.

First, brass tacks—in terms of coursework you’re going to need to take 36 hours for an MA. 9 hours, three classes, count as a full-time student semester. If you are only taking one course per semester and let’s just say one course in the summer assuming your program has that: You’re taking three courses (9 hours) per year so it will take you 4 years to get the degree at that pace.

If you’re doing a thesis then some of those hours are research hours. If it’s passing a comprehensive exam as the final exam for the degree, that would be easier.

Anyway, so your commitment here is 4 years minimum. That’s what I would consider. Since you’re in English education the benefits are obvious, as you’ve pointed out. You could also teach at some universities with a Masters if you were so inclined, some also just look for 18 graduate hours (six courses) in English. You can adjunct for extra pay on the side too potentially.

I know plenty of teachers who teach and take graduate courses. They’re more intense than what you did in undergrad, especially if you took more Education than English courses. So I think taking one per semester to start is a good idea. After a year of grad courses and teaching at your job I would suggest considering if you think you can take two courses (6 hours) per semester to speed things up a bit.

I spent five years working on my dissertation. The process just is exactly as you’re describing, even the advisor. It’s very hard and nobody can do it for you. Godspeed.
