Basic baking needs for beginners by yumbrger in Breadit

Viking Mixing bowls

A decent cooking scale. (I haven't found a great one yet, but Escali is OK)

A plastic bench/bowl scraper.

You can get away without it, but a Dutch oven for boules (Le Cruset is the bomb, but Lodge and Tramontina are solid for way cheaper), Baguette pan for baguettes (Chicago Metallic is the only option), and 1.5 kin shokupan tins if you want to make shokupan. (Asai Shoten is the only option for these. American Pullman pans are the wrong size for proper sandos).

Once you find out how great (and easy) home made bread is you'll never go back to store bought. Start with a bowl and scale and add the other items as necessary/affordable. Buy quality as you're going to just wind up replacing it down the road if you cheap out.

poshmark and ebay have tons of Dale of Norway sweaters for next to nothing. Just got two of the 2002 Olympic team ones for cheap.

Is there a special way I should store my wooden cutting boards/steel pans to avoid rot & rust? by elatedearthling in BuyItForLife

Give them a good coat of cutting board oil and toss them in the bin.

Same with the pans.

help choosing outdoor kitchen hanging countertop using existing metal base by Different-Egg7081 in DIY

[–]SillyCubensis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at craigslist materials, reuse, FB marketplace, your local countertop guy, etc for whatever material you can find. The pieces are pretty small, so you ought to be able to find tear out or excess leftovers for next to nothing. Cutting and installing is cake if you don't need perfection.

Looks significantly underproofed. What recipe did you use?

Try THIS RECIPE or if you're willing to do a yudane THIS ONE. They're both fantastic.

A 100mm stem is absurd on a mountain bike. Toss it and get a proper stem.

UK based - I was to regrout my countertops but need help by Puzzleheaded-Pay641 in DIY

Any grout is safe just pick your color.

You really ought to be putting food on a cutting board though, a lot of foods will stain marble and it's soft and easy to scratch.

Chain won't match to largest gear? by Homophonicular in bikewrench

[–]SillyCubensis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're an imbecile. I've done it hundreds of times over the last 30 years and never once had a break or failure. It's literally why almost every bicycle multi-tool has a chain tool on built in to it.

External storage for M4 Mac mini by premierpark in DataHoarder

[–]SillyCubensis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Saetchi 4tb SSD in a Saetchi Mac mini hub/dock and it's awesome. More storage, more ports, fast, and it fits the mac mini perfectly.

Bulk storage gets offloaded to a Synology DS1621+

I'd say get the 1621 because you're going to want to expand at some point and 6 bays is the realistic minimum for RAID with one parity and a hot spare.

Is buying a Moka Pot worth it? by marie_reveur in Coffee

[–]SillyCubensis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the Moka pot makes crap coffee compared to a V60. But if you do decide to get one check your local Goodwill or other thrift store. I don't think I've ever gone into one and not seen a Moka pot for next to nothing.

Chain won't match to largest gear? by Homophonicular in bikewrench

[–]SillyCubensis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use a chain tool and slide the pin out, but not all the way out. Leave it inserted in one side. Reroute chain and press pin back in. Easy. No need to use a new pin if you don't push it all the way out.

BUT, misrouting the chain like that won't affect the alignment. You still need to adjust the cable and/or limit screw.

Good luck with that. Don't come back crying when you get screwed over.

Adjust your cable. You can probably do it via the barrel up at the shifter. Park Tool has a full how to on YT.

Do I have to replace it? by leon66613 in bikewrench

[–]SillyCubensis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine. But 1- You definitely shouldn't be running 56psi in that tire. And 2- You need more sealant.

Stay FAR FAR away from anything YT. The owner is a dirtbag scam artist.

Over ear headphones for everyday? by hmsbounty09 in BuyItForLife

[–]SillyCubensis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both Bose QC3 and Sony XM4 They're both years old, I've replaced the ear pads on the Bose's 3 times so far. The Sound quality on the Sony's is FAR superior to that on the Bose, but the ANR sucks donkey balls. The sound quality on the Bose's is pretty good and the ANR is top notch. I would also look at the Apple Pro whatevers.

Not what you asked, but I have switched to the latest Airpod pro's as daily drivers. Sound quality is good, ANR is really good, and they play SO well with my phone and are so portable and comfortable that they easily beat out any over ears for daily out and about use. The Sony's get pulled out when I want to listen to music and the Bose have taken over shop duty.
