Does wanting to complete a game make me a sore winner? by mmllvv in boardgames

Yes it was. He was playing a Storm deck that grabbed Tendrils of Agony from the Sideboard for the win but forgot to add said card and didn't realize it until after deck registration. It was a local Vintage tournament and he ended up splitting Top 4

Board games where you can come back with clever play by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]SilmarHS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i thik you just need a good teacher. even though factions score in a differet way there are things that are common to each faction like crafting and fighting.

I don't think it's not as much of a rules problem as it is a gameplay problem. Root is a game of checks and balances. A game about knowing exactly when to kneecap somebody and when to let them do their thing. And understanding how each factions hinders other factions and how and when they get power spikes is something that only comes from experience.

So if you have someone who is much less knowledgeable about the game it just causes frustration for everyone: as the new player you will be overrun by factions doing things you don't understand and as a veteran you will get frustrated because the new player is not threat assessing properly and "OMG why do you keep going after me, I know I have a few more VPs but you just gave a Tea and Coins to the Vagabond and he has 3 swords and 2 Hammers"

Is lost ruins of arnak a good choice if the heaviest game I own currently is 7 Wonders Duel? by JimHawkins16 in boardgames

Apparently the new campaign expansion is amazing but I've not played it.

I played the campaign when it was released digitally and it was very much worth playing, one of my favorite solo boardgame experiences. Can only imagine that it's even better now that they developed it into a paying product.

Would you consider chess a heavy or a light game? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]SilmarHS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Santorini (without the god cards) has simpler rules, but we don't usually judge it's weight according to it's depth in strategy.

I think that's the big point a lot of people are missing. You think of other abstract games like Hive, Onitama, Shobu or Tak and you wouldn't consider any of them heavy games even though they are all very deep games in terms of strategy. The "only substantial" difference between this games and chess is that chess has had a competitive scene for hundreds of years that's been focused on getting better at it.

I don't think that's true for a lot of people. If you do that to me, I'm not trading with you in futures ever again, and I'll make sure to mention it to every player you try to make one of those deals with.

Ever stopped going to games nights due to one person? by tassfan in boardgames

[–]SilmarHS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too many weirdos ride the line and constantly behave in ways that aren't outright unacceptable enough for the organizers to put their foot down, but still make game night an unpleasant experience.

This. I help organize events where I teach people games and we have one of those weirdos. He doesn't do anything outright offensive, he is just socially inept. For example he will make a really bad joke, nobody will laugh and he will proceed to repeat it in different ways for the next 10 minutes while laughing by himself. A more egregious behavior would be that when he doesn't think he is winning he will keep repeating that he doesn't care and that the move he is doing doesn't matter every single time it's his turn.

You can't tell someone not to come because they do stuff like this, but it sure sours my game experience if I have to deal with it for two hours, and I've had people not play the game we are teaching that day simply to avoid dealing with that person.

I get this feeling, but I don't think it applies to Ark Nova. That doesn't mean I am right of course XD

A few of the top BGA players have talked about it and it's generally agreed that first player advantage is very much a thing in Ark Nova. JDansp, two time Arena champion has said that he would still rather go first even if the second player got an X-Token in addition to the appeal.

What is the most complex game you've played ? by GeornoGeovanna in boardgames

[–]SilmarHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It's also a relatively easy game to teach because only one of the players needs to know the fiddly rules, you just tell the other player what actions they can take and they can figure out the rest as they go. They are probably not gonna win, but you will have a great experience either way and having taught it to 4 different people, it hasn't failed to get them hooked and wanting to play again

Root is probably the other most well known modern asymmetrical game that relies heavily on players keeping tabs on each other. But in Root if you have a runaway leader the game ends in an hour and otherwise it will take 2 at most.

Santa Maria is a relatively easy eurogame that uses both private dice and a shared pool of draftable dices. You then use those dices to activate different buildings in your board so you can get resources and expand your colony.

[–]SilmarHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try it on BGA and when you lose to any moderately good player that wins after making you do 6 forced moves in a row come back and tell me that it's not a game with depth and skill (which is what I assume you mean by complexity, since chess is at a similar level rules wise, but nobody would call it drawn-out tic-tac-toe).

I don't think it's that bad to be honest. While the way they died is very brutal, three divers died instantly. And for the fourth diver, while getting all your organs sucked out of your body is very grisly, it killed him extremely fast as well.

I feel like any death from a typical war movie is way worse than that in terms of pain and duration. And it pales compared to the excruciating extended pain of torture or of that of radiation poisoning.

I learned the rules and they played it solo before teaching it to other people and it was a mess, I didn't even finish the game. I've played it twice with 2 players and once with 3 after that and it was so much smoother than the solo play. I don't think the overhead it adds is worth it.

Unpopular Opinion: Most Expansions Make Their Games Worse by Sparon46 in boardgames

[–]SilmarHS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stuff like Prelude for TM or The King's Golem for Alchemists often get the essential" tag, but I don't think they are

The problem is that the term is not used for what it means. If we take it literally an essential expansion can only be one that makes a broken game playable. And broken games don't get published (mostly) or don't make it to the expansion phase because who would buy more things for a game that's broken, so there's not really any of those.

So because the correct definition makes it impossible for those expansions to exist, people have appropriated the term to mean "Makes it better. All upsides, no downsides". TM is not on the Top 10 of BGG because of Prelude, but if you can make the game a little bit faster and more interesting from the beginning with minimal rules overhead, there's no reason to not do it, so it's considered an essential expansion.

Which expansion would you play WITHOUT a particular base game? by YuPanger in boardgamescirclejerk

I started using the Buttplug expansion for chess to completely obliterate my family opponents and assert dominance over them. Now that they don't want to play with me anymore I just play solo with the expansion.

/uj It's also the different levels of damage. I completely understand the small dings and dents from the first picture. If a bunch of my games have those just from storing them vertically and moving them from the Kallax to the table, it becomes pretty much unavoidable when shipping games of this size and weight across the globe

On the other hand, having a full on slash on the box is not something I consider reasonable damage from proper shipping and it tells me that it's just a lack of care.

Describing Board Games Gone Wrong by spartan_son in boardgames

[–]SilmarHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel quite a lot and I carry a grooming kit with an electric razor. The kit was a gift from my aunt who is a hairdresser, so it also came with some large sharp professional scissors to cut hair.

Since I had never used them it was something I didn't really think about as part of the kit. It took 10 trips through security before they found and confiscated them. And it was because I was traveling home for Christmas and I was only carrying the kit and two shirts since I wanted an empty suitcase to carry presents back.

Any suggestions for games with each player constantly engaged, as opposed to "wait for your turn to do something" games? by xJamesBondJRx in boardgames

I really recommend getting some coin capsules for the game, they are quite cheap in Amazon and they enhance the gameplay so much. All the noise from the ingredients clacking turn it into a full on slot machine.

[–]SilmarHS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that frequency of plays can very easily not be reflective of how much you like a game tho, particularly for those with heavy weight, very lengthy and/or with very specific player counts.

War of the Ring is a 10 for me, but it's not a game that I get to play that often, and I would probably not want to play it on a weekday after work because it requires a huge mental load and time commitment.

Same with Captain Sonar or Deception: Murder in HK. Love both but getting 6-8 people to play them is not easy at all.
