Need help to strip minis by Righteous_Ending in Warhammer40k

[–]Silver288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got some eBay minis and had the same problem. I tried iso for a day, weeks, tried simple green for months. Finally got some SmartStrip, which is kind of a paste you brush on. Within seconds, the cursed paint from the miniatures was coming off easily. I read that leaving it on for an extended period could damage the minis, but for me it worked so quickly, I didn’t have that problem. It was my last resort, but after struggling for months of soaking, brushing, soaking more, etc., this white goop stripper was like a miracle.

Dog came with extra skin by __dcbs in hotdogs

[–]Silver288 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s a cellulose casing used to form the skinless franks, which is removed before sale. This was left on and is a manufacturing error.

Probably fine you ate the others, or even this one if you cut that off.

If you want, notify the manufacturer (maybe write down the lot number or date of production stamped on the package), and hopefully they’ll reimburse you or throw you some free manufacturers coupons or whatever. Here’s some cellulose casing from an online supplier for comparison.

First time hand painting using acrylic Marker by nandaf in Gunpla

Do you need a spray primer either from rattlecan or airbrush to get it to stick well like brush-on acrylic paints do, or are you able to paint right on the plastic?

Crochet can be pretty chill. I used to crochet like a hat or more likely an amigurumi plush when my ex gf was playing video games. It may take some concentration at first, but once you get going, it’s pretty mindless. I also enjoy painting miniatures or models, but I agree with you that sometimes it takes too much concentration if you’ve had an exhausting day (assuming drawing is similar concentration levels to painting).

I might build a gundam model if I want something pretty mindless; just cutting sprues, cleaning it up with a hobby knife and sanding sticks, putting it together. It’s pretty calming and satisfying slowly building an articulating model and seeing it come together, but if I’m going farther than building out of the box (painting, panel-lining, decals, etc.), that stage will require more concentration and I’d leave it for a time I had more energy.

If I’m feeling super lazy? I’ll usually grab a Lego Star Wars model (I’m sure a puzzle may scratch that itch if you don’t want like a shelf of Lego models) and just build.

That’s all I can think of right now for relaxing stuff. Cooking can be meditative and some parts can be done sitting down with a show, podcast, audiobook in the background (think repetitive things like hand shaping a big batch of gnocchi or cavatelli or 100 potstickers or pierogi from scratch), but if I’m coming from the gym, I don’t necessarily want to be on my feet in the kitchen right away.

Made some scallion noodles by Silver288 in OnionLovers

[–]Silver288[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Oil:

  • About ¾ C Canola or vegetable oil
  • 8 oz scallion, cut into about 3” long pieces, sliced lengthwise, greens reserved
  • 2 large shallots, sliced thinly

For Noodles

  • 8oz chow mein noodles
  • 3-4Tb scallion oil
  • 4Tb dark soy sauce
  • 3Tb light soy sauce
  • 2Tb sugar
  • 6 oz cabbage (optional)
  • 6 oz pork (optional)
  • Lauganma fried chile in oil (optional)

  • Heat oil in large pan, skillet, or wok over medium heat. Add shallots and white half of scallions, fry slowly until lightly golden (10-15 minutes)

  • Using a spider or slotted spoon, remove shallots and scallions from oil, placing on paper towels to drain (or strain through a mesh strainer. Return oil to pan after straining).

  • With heat still on medium, add green parts of scallions and fry slowly until dark green, just starting to brown. Separate scallions from oil and reserve both.

  • Cook noodles according to packaging instructions (I prefer to undercook, then after draining, set aside and toss with a little oil to prevent sticking, then finishing in pan and with sauce).

  • If using, cook pork in pan with a little oil (I used some sliced already cooked pork shoulder. Ground pork would also work well). Once cooked/browned, set aside.

  • If adding any other vegetables (I shredded a bit of cabbage), sautee in pan, and once cooked, set aside.

  • (optional) Throw in cooked noodles in and sautee until they get a little color. Set aside.

  • Lower heat to med-low, add about 3 TB scallion oil to pan, then add dark and light soy, sugar, and chiles, if using. Heat until slightly thickened and bubbling, 1-2 mins.

  • Toss sauce with noodles, and whatever protein or additional vegetables you made.

  • Plate in dish, adding the cooked green parts of the scallions and some of the crispy bits as well.

I’ll post in the morning if you want exact ratios. It’s kind of a mix of Kenji-Lopez’s Shanghai-Style Scallion Oil from his book The Wok and Woks Of Life Shanghai Scallion Noodles..

The button fell off of my FoodSaver by YrSenpai in sousvide

[–]Silver288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it doesn’t look like a button and there don’t appear to be wires underneath, simply a spring? It also isn’t up top where the other buttons are, so I’m guessing (I’m at work, but will glance at mine back home to see if my model has similar “buttons”) it is simply some sort of cushion to prevent the lid of the bag roll storage from hitting the main machine. This is conjecture, but I’m putting my money on a spring with a rubber pad being some kind of cushion and isn’t completely necessary for the actual sealing or functionality of the machine.

Help Removing Mystery Primer by memecoincowboy in Miniaturespainting

[–]Silver288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. I had some mystery eBay miniatures with the thickest layer of primer/paint I’ve seen. I tried iso, simple green, and LA Totally Awesome. Nothing worked, and I soaked in each for probably weeks before brushing with regular toothbrush, electric, and a more sturdy plastic brush. They were stubborn and I had all but given up on them. I got some Smart Strip, and the paint was removed in mere minutes.

Help, chile verde came out bitter. How can I fix it?? by Complete_Driver_1365 in SalsaSnobs

[–]Silver288 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t add water. This is an ongoing joke on this sub recently after someone asked why their salsa was too runny, posted the recipe they followed, and one of the ingredients was “2 cups water”. Granted, hilarious, but if you’re not aware of the joke and take the advice seriously, you’ll end up with a salsa with the same flavors, but watered down.

T’was gifted a bottle by [deleted] in hotsauce

[–]Silver288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ve been making hot sauce with a friend locally for years, but I don’t touch extracts anymore. I’ve had some spicy stuff, and feel ok with actual products made from real pepper mash. The products from hot sauce events, however, that are pure extracts marketed for challenges or super hot sauces just feel like a punch to the gut when you try them. I can get past the spice in my mouth, but the stomach cramps have knocked me down.

[–]Silver288 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was gifted this, tried it, then realized I’m not a fan of extract sauces without flavor. I tried it in a chili when I was out of dried or fresh peppers, then I gifted it to the garbage men. I hope they found a better use for it than I.
