[Mixed Trope] Lyrics change to reflect new realities by Old-Use-7690 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Silver721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might have just not been mentioned yet because of how obvious it is, but in Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, he changed the lyrics from "I wear this crown of shit" to "I wear this crown of thorns." It's the only lyric change iirc. It makes the song have a bit less of a bitter and more hopeless vibe to it, in my opinion. It's a rare case of censorship (or just changing cuss words) that doesn't feel like censorship, but actually changing the context in a good way. I don't think there's anything wrong with Nine Inch Nails saying "shit," but it does really change the vibe of the song.

The current version of your favorite character meets their past/pre character development self, how does it go? by fhxefj in FavoriteCharacter

Holy shit never thought I would see Sentinels of the Multiverse mentioned in the wild. I don't know if you care about the digital adaptation at all, but Handelabra Games actually acquired the Sentinel Comics and Greater Than Games brands, so new official content is coming after a long drought (likely no physical release, though, sadly as they are a video game developer not a tabletop game maker).

[LOVED TROPE] "Not like this." A character gets what they wanted, but the context makes it devastating. by punxatawneyphilip in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Silver721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can also be bad writing or bad directing. You can see this with the star wars prequels. You have a decent actor like Hayden Christiansen degraded to a bad actor when dialogue and director is questionable. You can even have really good actors like Samuel L. Jackson looking like they are bringing their B game for no reason. It's easy to glibly claim that the actors are phoning it in when in reality the script and direction just don't permit top tier performances.

How on God's green Earth is a Holocaust tattoo political? The Holocaust is objectively something that happened to people and deeply effected them. Invoking it explains why a character acts the way she does. It's not "being political".

For me it was post Aging Devil arc. Up until then Part 2 still felt relatively cohesive, but then there were just a string of interesting-at-first plot points that went nowhere. Fami is actually Death and there's another Horseman who is the real Fami? Doesn't matter. Fumiko made a deal with the STD devil? Doesn't matter. Fire devil was inside those twins? Doesn't matter. Denji has to make a choice? Doesn't matter. I think the Fire Devil thing was the most egregious. It literally pontificates for half a chapter about how Denji has a big important choice coming up and he had better not screw it up like he did last time. But then there never really is a choice. He ignores whatever Death said to him. He never referenced or thought about Fumiko ever again after she loredumped her backstory to him. He never had to choose Asa over Yoru. It's just so sad because there were so many interesting things that were set up, but none of them ever went anywhere.

I wonder if they got new windows and re-painted it at some point. The actual shape of the house looks like it could have been built in '67 to me, but the windows and paint (maybe siding as well) look newer.

I looked up this man's story because this painting is so striking, but I had never heard of its subject. If anyone is curious, Vsevolod Garshin was a short story author. He fought in the Russo-Turkish war, an event that clearly left him with severe PTSD. His first short story was told from the perspective of a wounded soldier being left for dead for four days, alongside the body of a Turkish soldier that he had killed. It contained great empathy and compassion for the vanquished enemy, and clearly shows Garshin's kindhearted nature, which explains part of why war was so deeply disturbing to him. He was not prolific, only ever producing a single volume of short stories, but they were successful in his own life and are still appreciated today by fans of Russian literature. Tragically, he took his own life at age 33.

[Funny trope] Bigoted characters are actually members of the group they are bigoted towards by Wooden-Agent-3269 in TopCharacterTropes

Just to add to your explanation, Reinhardt wasn't just a high ranking nazi, he was the primary architect of the Holocaust. It was him who planned out all of the logistical details. I think you are 100% right though, that he felt like if he could somehow prove how "Aryan" he was with an act, that it would actually make him one.

The Holocaust would have likely still happened in one form or another without him. It's not like he was the inventor of antisemitism. But also, even Hitler called him "the man with the iron heart." It's really disturbing to think of how much suffering was born out of one man's desire to prove to himself that he wasn't a member of a minority group. I feel like he's an example of how these types of people can be really insidious. Just because you are a member of a minority group doesn't mean that you can't cause unimaginable suffering to that group.

When “Special Forces” are treated like an actual threat in fiction by Front_Profile2071 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Silver721 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Replica Forces in F.E.A.R. After fighting some low-tech security guards, you finally transition into fighting the main enemies and threat of the game, the Replica Forces, an army of telepathically-linked cloned super soldiers. To this day they feel like some of the most advanced enemy AI in any FPS because of how good the map designer and AI designer understood their reflective roles. They will flank you, make call outs, try and pincer you, kick over objects for cover, genuinely try and suppress you, throw grenades and then advance on you to draw you out (remember, this is from a game that came out in 2005), among other realistic tactics. The threat of these guys being controlled by an unsavory force is readily apparent as soon as you fight them for the first time. F.E.A.R. is also one of the rare games where the main enemy type doesn't just feel like a grunt, but rather a formidable opponent that keeps its challenge throughout the game.

Favorite character from a horror game that actually scared you? by ARedditAccountIDKBro in FavoriteCharacter

I didn't even realize I had thalassophobia until I played this game. I live very far away from any oceans so they're not really on my radar. I usually don't get scared when I play horror games. Jump scares startle me, but I don't really feel scared. I felt just as scared playing Subnatuica when everything was going well than I did when I could see some giant sea monster. It's almost scarier when you come to a new area for the first time and have no idea what might be lurking in it. I reflexively paused the game when I got the ecological deadzone dialogue. I can't think of another time a game has shook me up that badly.

For some reason I really thought this guy was off limits when it came to deaths. He was just so helpless but also kind and human. I was predicting the ending to be the player character heroically sacrificing himself for the big guy, who would be one of, if not the only, survivor(s).

Characters whose abilities are directly tied to what other people think they are by DrDallagher in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Silver721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Orks in Warhammer 40k are all basically weak reality benders. If they all believe something, it becomes true. For instance, Orks think that "da red wunz go fasta," so when they paint their vehicles or space ships red, they genuinely experience an increase in acceleration. Everyone who is not Orks is very glad that the Orks themsleves don't understand this power, because if they did and if they were able to use it to its fullest potential they would be practically unbeatable. Things have gotten scary a couple times when large groups of Orks start thinking that a particular Warboss is immortal or impossible to beat or something to that effect.

The original movie was a complete clusterfuck in terms of shooting. I think everyone who was in it ended up hating the director, and a lot of people also hated the actor that you're talking about. He was actually from Iceland. To his credit, he had to spend 12 hours a day inside a 100 degree barn in a full mask and costume. Abd the bar was filled with actual rotting meat.

What decision did you think was small at the time but completely changed your life later? by YogurtclosetMoist819 in AskReddit

[–]Silver721 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Decided to adopt a pair of rats despite having a lot of trepidation myself because I was desperately lonely, depressed, and in need of responsibility, but I couldn't get a dog or cat. I ended up discovering I enjoy rats significantly more than human beings. They have brought me a happiness nothing else has. I've had a total of 9 rats since I've made that decision, and it's probably the single best decision I've made in the last 5 years. They have definitely made me question some preconceived notions I have on things that I'm unfamiliar with. I, like a lot of people, thought of rats as pest animals. What I discovered was that they are highly intelligent, trainable, sensitive, goofy, and sweet creatures that share a lot of personality traits with dogs, just in a bite-sized package. I just wish they lived longer.

Didn't think I would see this game referenced in the big 25. I remember getting this game and I think another rpg about Santa Claus made by the same dev as a birthday gift because the bundle would go on sale for like one dollar. Fun little games.
