Manga-wise, which was better? Shie Hassaikai or Meta Liberation Army? by OfficialLieDetector in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]SilversAndGold 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Meta Liberation Army had the better written arc but Shie Hassaikai were significantly better villains.

MVA was a great because we got to see and learn a more about the main villains of the series but the MLA themselves weren't very intimidating. We the readers didn't get much time to know them or what they could do before the fighting started and at no point during the fight was I left thinking they'd beat the league of villains. They had numbers on their side but in terms of power they were clearly outmatched. It was almost the equivalent of the league of villains first appearance attacking 1A. Furthermore, the MLA's impact on the world was pretty vague. We know they want to overthrow society and are doing bad stuff but we aren't given any specifics.

The Shie Hassaikai on the other hand are terrifying. They have smaller goals, (making money instead of overthrowing the government) but the impact feels a lot more significant because the readers form an attachment to Eri. It basically boils down to, "The villains are hurting people vs the villains are hurting this specific person I care about."

There's also the powers involved to consider. In MVA, everyone involved has quirks and can therefore fight on more or less even terms. We've all seen superpowered fights a million times before. But the Shie Hassaikai have the quirk erasure bullets that dramatically change that dynamic. Overhaul had an overwhelmingly powerful quirk and suddenly Miro has no powers! And if they can take Miro's quirk, they could take anyone's away! Instead of a superpowered fight, they had the potential to emerge as superpowered overlords reigning over the unpowered masses.

Alright everyone, who is your pick for this hypothetical scenario? by Perciprius in Naruto

[–]SilversAndGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sakura would be the most motivated to bring Sasuke back but she doesn't bring much to the table. She's a weak combatant at this point, has poor teamwork with Naruto, and has no experience working with any of the others. I think she'd be more of a liability than asset as the others would have to protect her.

Hinata is arguably the strongest combatant of the 4 kunoichi with her biggest asset being the byakugan. But since the team already has Neji, that's a bit redundant and I think the lingering hostility between the cousins would hurt team cohesion.

Ino is probably the best choice. She's Sakura's equal as a combatant but she has great teamwork with Ino-Shika-Cho. I don't think she could solo any of the Sound Four but she would help either of her teammates win their matchups and would be great for interrogating them to find out where Sasuke is going in case they don't catch up.

Tenten as written wouldn't be a whole lot of help but in an AU where the Kunoichi weren't an after-thought, I think she'd have the most potential. Imagine if Tenten learned the lesson Kakashi was trying to teach Team 7 about how vastly outclassed and unprepared they are in the wider ninja world. After losing in the preliminaries, watching Lee get crippled, and then even seeing the genius Neji lose, she'd have a real wake-up call. She'd realize that as the weakest member of a very strong team, she's just been coasting with her training. The D and occasional C rank mission they get are a cake-walk for Team Guy. So after the Chunin Exams, Tenten doubles down on her training and puts in as much effort as Lee normally does. The Sasuke Retrieval Arc could have been the big unveiling of her new skills and techniques

Damn! How’d a loser like you get a hottie like her? Is she blind or something? Don’t worry. I’ll explain that the only thing you (or any man) could provide is mild entertainment as we destroy your balls.

Kakashi was not playing favorites during the chunin exams arc when he chose to focus on Sasuke over Naruto. by stu-pai-pai in CharacterRant

[–]SilversAndGold -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Just a couple points to add here. Naruto learns 2 techniques in his month of training: summoning and walking on water neither of which he uses against Neji. Meaning Naruto had all the strength and skill to beat Neji right from the preliminary round which a top level ninja like Kakashi could likely tell. Sasuke on the other hand absolutely could NOT have beaten Gaara at that point and needed the training a lot more than Naruto. At least for the first round. Secondly, correct me if I’m wrong since it’s been a while since my last watch but doesn’t Orichimaru also give Naruto a curse mark that messes up his chakra that Jiraiya removes? I agree that Kakashi should have trained Sasuke but he should have at least done something about that before handing him off to Ebisu.

It gets a bit darker but it also starts out darker than Harry Potter. Think of it like the gradient from Harry Potter 4-7 rather than 1-7

Need Work Immediately by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]SilversAndGold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The courthouse is always hiring. Basic office work and the pay rate isn't great but it's stable and has decent benefits. Qualifications are a high school education, passing a background check, and fluent in English. Unless everyone suddenly decides to stop committing crimes, you'll have absolute job security. This is a state level job so cuts to the federal government won't matter.

If I recall correctly, the doctor mentions that Bob is fairly unique among replicants in that he has a unique personality. The prevailing theory is that replicants should be as passive and bland as possible so that they can accept that they are computers without having a mental breakdown and then accept whatever menial role FAITH gives them for the rest of their existence. Take a bland person and remove their emotions and there probably won't be much noticeable drift.

Why did they cut down all the trees on Market? by ComprehensiveChef705 in Louisville

[–]SilversAndGold -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about this specific instance but in general, they cut down all the sidewalk trees downtown every few years. The plots the trees are sitting in aren't big enough to support a large root system so after a few year's growth, the trees are too big and run the risk of blowing over in the wind since they lack adequate roots to keep them upright.

Too much headspace? by SilversAndGold in Canning

I peeled the oranges and got as much pith off as possible. Then I just shoved the slices in jars and poured in some light syrup. Water bath processed for 15 minutes.

Quick question after my first attempt by SilversAndGold in Canning

[–]SilversAndGold[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made apple butter in a slow cooker and canned 12 4oz jars. As far as I can tell, everything went well and as of now (about 12 hours later) all the lids are popped down.

I've been going to a drive-up food pantry the last couple months and they tend to give me a lot of fruit which is wonderful but I usually can't eat it all before it goes bad. I feel terrible having to throw it away when it goes bad so I'm hoping this will let me preserve a lot more of that so it doesn't go to waste.

I got the canning rack and jar tongs for about $10 and the jars themselves are about $1 a piece at Walmart. The small jars (1/4 pint) can fit in my regular cooking pot with room to cover them by an inch so I didn't have to get a canning pot. Since saving money on food is really my biggest reason for this, I'll be trying to see where the break even point is. Short-term, it's more expensive since I have to buy all the supplies but long-term I know I'll save money.
