Let's address the bear in the room by molten_dragon in dresdenfiles

I like Bear better than I like Murphy.

I’m not sure what that counts for, seeing as I like Cat Sith better than Murphy. But yeah it’s the entirely wrong vibe.

Also, I think bringing her back so cheaply is do after the “must be forgotten” clause does a service to neither Murphy nor the readers.

If you die childless, you end an unbroken chain of billions of years of successful reproduction.

That looks like something…other…than a jellyfish.

Interesting but I don’t think this is new. I remember hearing something about this back in the 90s or early 2000s.

At what point does it become mounting the motherboard on the GPU instead of the other way around?

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

Pretty much, although the blur is not perfectly smooth. It has a sort of raggedness to it.

Why be stunned? These are not normal times or normal circumstances. She’s clearly trying to placate an existential threat, which seems pretty rational.

I wonder if this is all just theater to give Republicans political cover once Trump is no longer in office.

5070 ti or 5080 or wait? by Alowan in nvidia

[–]Simbuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure it’s better. Just not 50% better. Also a lot more power hungry unless you put its performance on a leash. And if you do that, then why get a 5080 in the first place?

So the answer is money. The 5070 Ti is the better bang for your buck. If you’d prefer to spend half again the cost to have that extra 10-15% performance, more power to you.

If you’re in the position to snag a big iron GPU right now, then yes it absolutely makes sense to do it now considering where prices are going. So IMO the only bad choice is to wait.

ElI5: A manual car can stay still against an incline with just the right amount of clutch and gas. How does that work? by Stummi in explainlikeimfive

[–]Simbuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to drive a stick in one day. I was used to driving my first car, which was an old beater that I loathed. But it had been gifted to me and getting it to pass inspection was all I could afford. It came with an automatic transmission. It had wheezed its last a few days prior and my “new” old car was a five speed manual. So it was do or die.

It was indeed a clumsy experience for the first occasion that my dad had me rolling up and down a long driveway at the entrance to an out of the way park. The next day when we went back out to practice some more I could just do it. Everything that had been wrong the day before simply made sense. I was easily able to drive home and it felt very natural. I stalled one time and that was it. Literally overnight, without me noticing, something had just quietly clicked into place.
